Solved Is My Windows Booting Too Fast?

I'm working on the new PC that came installed with Windows 11 Pro. As part of setting that up for myself I disabled Fast Startup and also Disabled Hibernation, which automatically deletes the hibernation file. Also, in Group Policy, I set "Require use of fast startup" to 'disabled'. So, in theory, my system shouldn't 'fast startup'. I don't want fast startup because I have in mind that it writes masses of data to the SSD as the system shuts down (and then reads that data when the system is newly booted into) — a kind of half-way hibernation mode is how I think of it.

However, what I have is a system that does seem to be 'suspiciously' starting up very fast. Is there anything else I need to do to stop this? What is this PC doing, why is it starting so fast?

I'm not sure which of your two systems, you're talking about, but in the BIOS, there's also a Fast Boot setting.
Disabling that will slow your boot time a bit.

Also, depending on the drive that Windows is installed on... the M.2 NVMe drives boot.... VERY fast.
Just because they are much faster drives.

The system will start as fast as it starts. It's not going to "miss" data because of start speed. And your thinking of "half-way hibernation" is just that - your thinking. It sounds to me as though you're looking for problems where none exist.

If everything is working the way it's supposed to, it may be time to move on ;)

IMHO, People worry far too much about the amount of data written to their ssd drives. Can almost guarantee that you will outgrow the drive, or performance advantages of future drives will cause you upgrade long before your drive exhausts its write capabilities.

I agree with @pparks1. Turn on Fast Start and Hibernation and enjoy the speed and convenience of your new PC.

Thanks for that information. I was actually speaking of my Desktop PC, the other machine is a laptop, which I mention in the specs.

In any case I looked in the BIOS and found Fast Boot was set to enabled. I then disabled it and rebooted a couple of times. There is no boot time difference that I can see with it disabled — so I've left things at 'disabled'.

However, while researching this further this was helpful: Should I Turn on Fast Boot in BIOS? Exploring its Benefits and Drawbacks I found the information there worth thinking about.

On this basis I will now mark the thread as 'solved'. Thanks for the responses.

I disabled fast boot in bios I like to be able to see the press f2 or delete to enter bios. On fast boot I never see it.

Fast Startup and Fast BOOT are completely different with different functions.
In BIOS, Fast BOOT skips some POST checks, disk SMART tests and eventually others like Memory Training and goes straight to loading OS with no MB logo or verbatim messages. That's supposed to speed up that part but modern PCs are so fast that it doesn't matter much or at all.
Windows Fast Startup don't actually speed up BOOT process but start services and programs that were active at shutdown, restart or hibernation. It "speeds" system just by you not having to restart those manually. For that it needs Hyberfill.sys to write those in. That's why it may look like it even slows whole process. That's a bit counterintuitive name. But can be useful if you habitually open same programs when you fire up PC.

IMO, If I can make a cup of coffee while waiting for my computer to boot, it's too slow. If I don't have enough time to hit the key to enter the BIOS if needed, it's too fast. Anything in between is fine.

I could prefer less booting time in my case. However, definitely a good practice to backup the important data , esepcially on desktop and C drive to void data loss.
