Solved Is that a bug on Windows 11 ?

Every time i access a folder with multiple videos it will load the videos in a strange way like you can see in the video below never happened to me on windows 10

Use Windows Search and look for "File Explorer Options" - > Click the View tab and check the first option: Always show icons, never thumbnails option

Do same videos load properly now?

No , same problem . Can you try on your system and tell me if it the same on your system also ?

Seems perfectly normal to me....

...the real puzzle is why you never saw it like that in Windows 10.

If you don't want to see the video thumbnails, then tick the box for 'Always show icons....'.

It never loaded videos this way in Windows 10 like in the image below maybe im wrong

The default view for a video folder is to show icons. You can make it look like your screenshot in Windows 10 or 11 by setting the view to 'Details'.

You can change the template for the default views.

I have seen it for a few seconds while File Explorer reads the folder contents and tries to show a thumbnail of each file. After a few seconds everything is normal. It doesn't happen every time.

Since it's loading a blank piece of paper for file type mp4, it wouldn't hurt to rebuild your icon cache. Rebuild Icon Cache in Windows 11 Tutorial
If that doesn't work per Brink's last line in that tutorial, then try restoring default file type associations for videos. In the list click on mp4 to get the appropriate reg file for videos. Restore Default File Type Associations in Windows 10

No such issue. Was thinking that maybe your thumbnails cache got to big - so it slows down the loading (thus, changing from thumbnails view to icons - should have solved that issue - if that was the case).

You could still clear the thumbnail cache and see if it helps. Use Windows Search for Delete Temporary Files -> click on Temporary Files - > wait a bit till the list loads then click Remove Files (should remove both temporary and thumbnails).

I've been using VLC for years in Windows 7, 10, and 11 and have never seen this issue on any of my systems. And I have Terabyte-size video folders. Did uninstall and reinstall work?? I find this quite odd.

Sometimes Windows gets blamed for things actually caused by third party apps running amok.

I hate when this happens. You have a bug, spend hours to figure out what it is and there is a simply fix just reinstall a certain app. If only we knew it earlier, before we waste our time... "my last knowledge I wish I had you earlier", as we say in Greek.

What I have found over the years is that every piece of Video hardware is shipped with it's own [and often badly written] playback and editing suite.

This assumes that you do not have an existing suitable option on the system. back in the last century it may have been the case but not for many years. Windows ships with a reliable video sub system to handle the most common formats and software such as VLC that will handle virtually anything else.

My advice to clients is to use the hardware to produce a known format of video File. once you have the standard output, only consider installing the bundled software if you find the standard available options are not compatible with your existing system.

At this point you have to consider does the bundled software give you any advantage that is great enough to switch to using it and how does it interact with your existing software.

I have to admit I have in the past returned hardware that worked well but was not producing acceptable output in standard formats

I know Movies and TV app can play almost everything, but I don't like the simplified interface and the lack of features. VLC provides more features, not only basic playback, and if you install the K-Lite codec pack you can play AND edit almost any video format with an appropriate video editing application. VLC doesn't expose its codecs to third party applications, so you cannot edit the videos, only play them. To have the best of all, I install K-lite codec mega pack, but also have VLC as a fallback. I have also installed youtube-dl to be able to play youtube URLs at Media Player Classic.

Prog icons vanish from desktop, other icons turn into a white box. Occasionally some dont even open, when I go to file location and click on relevant icon, it opens? I have just reinstalled one that vanished last night.

The past 48 hours have been a bit of a nightmare. It involves Steam. It wouldn't open, and when it did, it was really slow, like minutes. I uninstalled steam, rebooted and reinstalled steam, a 1 minute install took well over an hour. I had lost all my files on pc so had to start downloading them again (saves were good). Two large games too around 12 hours to download. I have just finished downloading the final game, took about a minute to do less than a half gb. Broadband registered 700+ so its not that.

I am putting all these on one external drive (K) Western Dig 5TB. Diagnostics tell me the drive is 100% OK, should be its new.

If you have any third party application for customizing the interface, such as Explorer Patcher, Open Shell etc, update it. Or uninstall and reinstall it.
