You think there is something wrong with the os? I think widows just doesn't want to use the page file and needs some tweak to fix.

The logs may report something related to the problems.

I'd suggest you don't run the browser at all when using the trading app. In fact you should boot into Windows and run only one app. Even if you run a browser and close it, it will likely still hog some memory. Windows will probably work better if you set the virtual memory to automatic as it's management is quite sophisticated

There are some resources that have to use RAM, and at just 2GB you may be running out of real RAM for them to use. These may be things like USER or GDI resources.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

It's definitely possible it's 4gb and I'm not remembering right. I'll have to check tomorrow, but the problem is the same regardless. Whatever the amount of ram it's not sufficient and windows isn't utilizing the pagefile.

Chrome for instance would rather forget where I've scrolled to on a site rather than write it down in the pagefile.

I suggest you enter the laptop specs as your system 2.

No, that is not a recommendation to use instead of auto - it is simply guidance how to size a pagefile IF you get issues.

It gives more guidance how to manually size rather than using the 1.5xRAM decades old rule of thumb which uninformed web wannabe tech authors still spout.

By default, it is set to auto which has always been MS's recommendation.

For vast majority of users this is fine - I bet 90+% never change that.

I cannot say why your pc is crashing rather than using pagefiles as it does not happen on my devices. I have not ever had a memory crash on my 4GB travel laptop but I do know pagefiling is used sometimes.

It is not necessarily Windows per se.

You could have some kind of memory leak that is upsetting the system. It can be quite a detective exercise to bottom out such issues.

I wager the issue is related to a faulty app.

I don’t believe they would put Win 11 on a PC that only has 2GB of RAM, and sell it.

The same way I know when I'm out of gas regardless if I know the tank is 10 or 12 gallons.

I tried a ram cleaner last night and it was able to free up enough ram to take it from roughly 75% down to 50%. Since I'm only running chrome and a trading app then I'm assuming it has only 2gb. I didn't think the amount of ram is relevant to the question of whether there is a way to force win11 to use a pagefile, so I didn't pay much attention to the nominal, just the percent. Whatever it is, the fact remains that it's not enough.

Emty RAM is not doing anything so give up on the ram cleaner!

Dad and I both bought one, but I bought mine way before he did and advised him to get more ram, so I'm pretty sure his is twice mine. Since I have the box from his right beside me and it has that model number on it, then that's dad's laptop and therefore mine is half as much, or 2gb. But it's possible I have a 4 and he has an 8, and I'm confused whose box I have here. I'll look at the laptop later today, but it seems like a distraction from the problem.
