Is there a way to hide the BitLocker padlock icon?

I'm talking about the one that covers your C: drive icon. Any registry settings we could change to get rid of it, or any other method?

I'm also looking for any software that'll let you individually change icons like network devices, hard drives, folders, and apps. I know how to manually change a lot of these, but it would be time consuming whenever I wanted to switch things up, but I don't know how to change network device icons. I used to use Stardock's Icon Packager a very long time ago, and I looked into it again, but it hasn't been updated for several years now and looks like abandonware. Are there no suitable replacements?

I would create a system image before attempting anything below, or at least, recall the exact steps so as you can reverse anything in case of an adverse behaviours.

The padlock overlay icon that appears on encrypted drives is managed by a shell overlay handler in the Windows Registry. You can hide it with a simple registry tweak. This does not disable BitLocker — it only removes the visual overlay.

Rename the Overlay Handler Key

Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter.

Navigate to:

Code:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers

Find the key named:

Code:

EnhancedStorageShell

Right-click it and choose Rename. Change it to something like:

_EnhancedStorageShell

This disables the overlay without deleting the key.

Restart Windows Explorer:

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
Find and restart Windows Explorer.

To Restore the Padlock Icon

Just rename the key back to EnhancedStorageShell and restart Explorer again.

Instructions

Open Notepad and paste the contents of one of the above blocks.
- In fact make sure you create both reg files. The ”hide” and the “Restore” into their own reg files.
Save the file with a .reg extension (e.g., hide_bitlocker_icon.reg & Restore_bitlocker_icon.reg)
- You need to change the Notepad setting at the bottom of the save dialogue to “All Files” to give it the .reg extension.
Double-click the file and allow the UAC prompt.
Restart Windows Explorer or reboot your PC for changes to apply.

If I had to guess, Hide would be reg line #1 and Restore would be reg line #2.

What's the point of renaming it for safekeeping, when you have a proper remove & restore file?

ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers_EnhancedStorageShell isn't recognized by Windows. I can see doing that if you're renaming the key manually as a backup in RegEdit. But if you're using a formal set of reg files, then you don't need to keep that charade going.

I've done some actual testing:

1. This reg key (Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers\EnhancedStorageShell) is protected by special permissions. A normal reg file cannot delete or modify its value.

2. Deleting this key (after overriding the key's default ownership & permissions) doesn't change the icon overlay. I restarted Explorer just to make sure.

The real icon overlay is managed by another feature, which I don't know offhand. EnhancedStorageShell covers that class of exotic USB drives that do their own HW data encryption, independent of BitLocker.

Apparently there are dll's relating to bitlocker functionality one named bitlocker.dll or bdeui.dll and another named bdesvc.dll. There is also a service running as well

Seems that it is considered risky by some techies to play around with this as it may cause issues. I wouldn't be too keen to play with this on my laptop which has Bitlocker enabled by default.

Can’t say it will work, because I am currently not Bitlocked.
But it was in my list of tweaks which I hoard regularly.
I have 1000’s, I see em, I take em.

Have you actually tried it on a test W11 box? The key is protected out of the box, you get a permission error in RegEdit.

You can test this, it should be harmless:

You'll need to run Regedit with elevated privileges. To do so, download Power Run (Download at the bottom of the page)

PowerRun v1.8 (Run with highest privileges)

Extract the archive
Right click on and run PowerRun_x64.exe as administrator (it’s a portable app, nothing installs)
Open Regedit
Go to "System Tools" "Registry Editor"

In Regedit, navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers

Find the key named: EnhancedStorageShell
Right-click it and choose Rename.
Change EnhancedStorageShell to something like: _EnhancedStorageShell
Reboot or restart Explorer.

If it doesn't remove the padlock, go back (using Power Run > Regedit) and rename the key back to EnhancedStorageShell no harm no foul.
