The following images show what happens when viewing audio files. The image associated with an audio file shows in the Preview pane. When I open the folder for a different audio file, the image associated with the previous file continues to be displayed. No matter what folder or file I open, this same image will continue to be displayed. Closing and opening File Explorer erases that image and the correct image for the other file/folder can be seen, but then this image will remain in memory as was the case in the first instance. This was not a problem in Win7 however it was during the brief period I used my old computer after upgrading to Win10. I thought perhaps it had been caused by using various "fixes" to restore the function of old Explorer but I have not attempted those fixes with Win11. Apologies that this duplicates my previous post but I could not find a way to edit it. Thanks

Not a bug. With Win7 I had likely used a Power Toy to enable playing audio and video file in File Explorer. When I discovered this was missing in Win11 (and Win10) I searched for a means to enable it. Installation of Windows Media Player Legacy was the solution for audio. Because this did not create problems in Win7, it had not occurred to me that it could. Unfortunately, it caused the problem I thought must be a Win11 bug. Removed Windows Media Player Legacy via Control Panel "Turn Windows features on or off".

@dacrone I think I used OldExplorer on my old PC which I upgraded to Win10. The name was similar, anyway. If it was that, then Windows Mediat Player Legacy cause the identical problem. I wish I still had the Power Toy, which is my best guess for the source. Power Toys provided some great utilities for Win7 and I briefly installed them on my new PC before reading they were not updated and monitored so not trustworthy. I don't recall if I searched to see if there was still a utility that would enable playing audio/video files in File Explorer, but if those in the know say not to use Power Toys then folks like me are at least smart enough to listen. Now, if I had that old Power Toy saved somewhere, I'm sure I would be tempted!

there's oldnewexplorer, which is a product made by the same developer as startallback

and there is oldexplorer that i mentioned. oldexplorer runs on the CLSID of the explorer shell with a ribbon. you can try it and if it works, it works. if not, no harm. it is its own exe, so it wont interfere with windows 11 explorer either way

@dacrone, if I give it a try I'll let you know how it goes. "oldnewexplorer? sounds more like what I used. I'm trying NOT to be tempted, but now you do have me wondering.

no worries. just info for you. oldnewexplorer is no longer being updated as the developer has moved fully to StartAllBack

OldExplorer is 100% functional and still being maintained.

Because of my false belief that the program I used in Win10 to recapture the start menu function of Win7 might be the cause of the problems, despite reading good things about StartAllBack, I decided to accept Win11 as it was. Can't say I love the look but at least it allowed use of folders in the start menu so that I could group apps, despite not being able to really customize it. Thanks for all the info. I really appreciate it.

if you want that enabled, it may work with OldExplorer. this app is trusted, as it was developed by a regular here
Unfortunately, the problem persists regardless of which Explorer flavor is used. The issue is with the legacy WMP preview handler (wmprph.exe) and occurs on Windows 10 as well. Here's a discussion about it from 2018:

File Explorer Preview Pane and Music Media - displays same cover art for all artists

I couldn't find any fix or any similar preview handler that shows the album art and provides playback controls directly in the preview pane. All of the tools I tested, such PowerToys Peek, open a separate playback window.

@LesFerch, thanks for checking it out. I had a feeling it wouldn't work. Maybe someone will develop a new Power Toy providing that that function that will work in Win11 (& 10). It was also handy for viewing doorbell camera footage I had saved. I must say that I'm happy with the incredible speed of programs and browsers in Win11 on my ThinkCenter which makes the losses more bearable. I haven't completely adjusted to the absence, however. Today I opened a folder with an mp3 file in it and stared at it, puzzled for a minute, trying to make sense of what to do with it and realized I was "missing" the play button in the Preview Pane!

not what you wanted, but an option for you - QuickLook is like macOS.. press spacebar to preview/play files without launching their associated app(s)

Files UWP Explorer does still play media files in the preview pane, if you're interested

^i'd use the classic installer (exe), not the store installer

@dacrone Do you think Win/QuickLook would work with Win11? I see this comment about downloading from the Microsoft Store (Windows 10 users only, no preview in open/save-dialogs available). Not sure what that means.

@dacrone That sounds awesome. I'm going to give it a try. I'm sure it will take me some time to get the hang of it as I'm not a mac user. Thanks!

@dacrone Win/QuickLook also is SO, SO much better than Adobe Acrobat for viewing PDFs. I just couldn't justify buying any of the Adobe products I once had through my employer as I really do very little with it now other than produce pdf's for ease of sharing with others and I can do that with MS Word. Adobe Acrobat is a real pain and I can now happily delete it!

also fyi:

Directory Opus

and

xplorer2 (took me a bit to figure out how to configure it to properly look like win10 file explorer at first)

both have the functionality you wanted. neither are free though. ~$30, but have free trials if you're interested.

@dacrone I really worked hard customizing the Win10 start menu to make it tolerable but the popup to power off or restart was hard for me to see and use and drove me crazy. Win11's start menu may not be customizable in the way I would have wished, but grouping my apps in folders has made it useable and I've adjusted to it. It's good enough and I really like the placement of the power button. Now, with Win/Quicklook I'm also happy with File Explorer. Indeed, I'm just plain happy with my computer and Win11 thanks to help and guidance I've received. It was not an easy transition from my old ThinkPad and Win7 but it sure is an improvement and with Win/Quicklook, I'm able to work with with files with ease once again.
