A rather theoretical article, seems nothing practical was attempted.
Just because there are M.2 slots does not mean that an array of Cards with other functions will work.
There are various M.2 keys and other configuration considerations.

Laptops for quite a few years have 1 or 2 M.2 NVMe slots for SSDs, and an M.2 Wireless Card.

I'm pretty sure if I plugged in my Laptops M.2 Wireless Card in to the spare M.2 NVMe slot it would not work.

I agree with that. I have a PC and it has a dedicated M.2 2230 slot for WiFi and Bluetooth card. The other 2 m.2 2280 slots are for nvme drives per its specs. You would need to consult your motherboard manual to see how the slots are keyed, and what type m.2 card each slot supports.
