when i click on an iso windows asks me are you sure you want to mount this iso? is there any way to prevent windows from asking me every time?

Turning off UAC should do it, but why would you want to go to such an extreme measure when isos are mounted so seldom.

You can also run an elevated powershell command.

If you "right" click an ISO it should give you the option to Mount it... on the right click context menu.

I have 7zip installed, I had to UN-associte it with ISO files, in Tools > Preferences.
THEN the right click on the ISO file worked as it should.
Other 3rd party zipping programs may also need ISO to be UN-associated.

There's really only 2 things I try to do with an .iso file, Mount it to view the contents and maybe extract a file for a purpose or can choose Burn to disc which creates an exact duplicate of the original disc. The .iso is convenient for downloading. An .iso itself is normally not bootable but the disc created from it can be, whatever the original was. An .iso file can also be a convenient method for transferring a group of files to another computer or sharing with someone else. Being on an Optical Disc the files can't be deleted, lessens loss.

Mine mount without asking.

Where did you get your ISO? If you downloaded from the Internet it may be marked as having come from another computer. If so, just unblock it and it will mount without questions from now on.

it's asking you, do you want to open this file? that is what i want to go away.
even when i uncheck that box, always ask before opening this file, it's still asking me do you want to open this file?

Yes, because the file is marked as having been downloaded from the internet. I just downloaded one to be able to demonstrate that. After ticking the 'Unblock' box in its Properties and clicking OK it mounts straight away, no questions asked.

i did something before on my previous computer that stopped windows from asking me "do you want to open". when i clicked the iso it just brought me straight to the directory of the iso without treating me like a child and having to confirm if i want to do something.

While it is possible to stop Windows blocking any downloaded files, it is a security risk. Turning it off applies to all downloaded files, including potentially malicious .exe files. It is far safer to individually unblock only those files you trust as you download them.

i don't know what i did, but i know i did not turn off windows defender. if there is something on my computer, and i click it, i want to run it. i'm not a toddler. windows needs to know it's place and stop asking me, are you sure?

Just unblock each ISO when you have downloaded it, that's the easiest way to stop Windows bothering you.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

no, disable blocking downloading files sounds nice. that's probably what i did before.

to confirm, turning this off only blocks prompts about running "untrusted" files and will not completely disable defender, right?

Correct, this will not affect Defender.
