Solved Issue with HEIC Photo colors in Windows 11

From what I understand; you are now missing the correct codec to read this HEIC (Apple) format. (I am seeing a red photo also)

There are 2 solutions to this.
1 - At the source: As these are made with an smartphone device alter your settings by choosing; Settings > Camera > Formats and choose: "Most Compatible" JPG/HEVC. In case of Photo's; it will use the JPG codec. In case of video's; it will use the HEVC codec.
2 - Windows side: Install the proper HEIF Image Extensions and (for some reason this HEIF Image Extension needs this also. HEIF for photo's and HEVC/x265 for video's.) the HEVC Video Extensions. Both can be found at the Microsoft Store or somewhere else.

You have installed the HEIF extension (the latest) already, but you need the HEVC extension also to correct the colors.

Note: I find it strange that the Xiaomi 15 adopted the HEIC codec from Apple as is seems to be an Android device. Other Android manufactures are using a format that don't need these codecs to view them on a PC.

Which filter / plugin should I get?
For Irfanview, you can download and install all plugins at once.
Plugins then can be switched on or off in the Help section.

I did some tests in my VirtualBox Win11 and noted the same problem as you have, photo is overall red.
There I installed HEIF Image Extensions and HEVC Video Extensions, like I (appearantly) did on my main system some month ago. And like @hader is writing. But no result at all. Installed Irfanview there, installed the filters, but no way to display your heic image correctly.

Whatever I try in that VirtualBox computer, it still displays in the wrong way.
It seems to have to do with graphic drivers, because that's what is different in a VirtualBox window. But I am not sure.

That .heic format really is a problem, but after spent hours testing I stop the efforts to get it right. I myself don't really need to get it working.
Still don't understand fully why my main system does display the image correctly, must be some codec matter that is weird in some way.
Sorry not being able to help you.

It's almost as if your device is not assigning a color profile to .heic file types.

Using Download CopyTrans HEIC 2.0 - Latest & Fastest Direct Downloads! instead of Windows HEIF Extension (uninstalled it) - even the problematic photos are shown correctly - with IrfanView and FastStoneView - but not with XnView (shown same as above). Supposedly, Windows HEIF adds native HEIF/HEIC support to Windows (ideal for Windows Photos App and Paint) - while CopyTrans HEIC 2.0 adds HEIC/HEIF support to Windows Explorer & viewers (works with Windows Explorer thumbnails, Photo Viewers and Office / also adds the option - to convert to JPG - to right click context menu). Experience wise - had better experience with CopyTrans, especially with 3rd party image viewers. Tho, Windows HEIF extension - should be uninstalled - cause it semss to take priority over CopyTrans - and that can lead to conflicts (using only Windows HEIF - and not being able to show the content - like with the problematic images mentioned in this topic).

Here, no issue with CopyTrans HEIC 2.0 - using IrfanView:

2026-01-11_211820.webp

Latter Edit: Apparently XnView has its own integrated HEIC decoder: XnView - Free HEIC Viewer | iPhone HEIF Image Viewer - bypasing the CopyTrans HEIC decoder - same goes for Windows HEIF Extension.

A color profile issue won't make it all read.
Looks like the phone didn't implement HEIC correctly and the firmware update fixed it.

That's right!
I realise that red photos have no or not enough color profile information when I compare exif data between normal photos and red photos

exiftool -s .\red-1.HEIC | sls -Pattern 'profile|color'
the output:
Code:
ColorSpace : Uncalibrated
GeneralProfileSpace : Conforming
GeneralProfileIDC : Main Still Picture
GenProfileCompatibilityFlags : Main Still Picture
ColorProfiles : nclx
ColorPrimaries : Unknown (0)

And for normal photo (the one is displayed color correctly)
exiftool -s .\normal-1.HEIC | sls -Pattern 'profile|color'
output:
Code:
ColorSpace : Uncalibrated
GeneralProfileSpace : Conforming
GeneralProfileIDC : Main Still Picture
GenProfileCompatibilityFlags : Main Still Picture
ProfileCMMType :
ProfileVersion : 4.0.0
ProfileClass : Display Device Profile
ColorSpaceData : RGB
ProfileConnectionSpace : XYZ
ProfileDateTime : 2022:08:08 08:08:08
ProfileFileSignature : acsp
DeviceAttributes : Reflective, Glossy, Positive, Color
ProfileCreator : Apple Computer Inc.

Now I'm finding the way to fix color profile on red photos, otherwise I can only view it on the phone.

Some tries so far but still not work:
magick red-1.heic -profile sRGB.icc fixed.jpg
magick red-1.HEIC -set colorspace RGB -colorspace sRGB fixed.jpg
ffmpeg -i red-1.HEIC fixed.jpg

WIndows doesn't play nice with HEIC images, simply because it's from Apple, but GIMP does an excellent job of editing and exporting HEIC images to a non-proprietary format

It is .heic from iPhone that (sometimes?) gives trouble, not Android.
I haven't got an iPhone (much too expensive for me) and don't want any (would not know what to do with it) so I can't test what has to be done on that device to make .heic omages work on other devices...

What you stated about the VirtualBox is true. Like VMWare they emulate a videocard device. That's why you can't install drivers onto it like you do with a real device. You can install the HEIF Image Extension and HEVC Video Extension on it, but it does not do the same job as a real PC would. In a virtual machine they are not talking to a real graphics card but to an emulated one. So the results/effects are different. I have some more experiences with VMWare and I am aware that they always try to update their emulated drivers. When I generate a VM with VMWare I can always install any OS with a emulated graphic device driver that does just that what it needs te be doing; giving me an picture. But afterwards I can install a VMWare Toolkit with a more emulated videocard driver who has more capability's than the standard one. Those tools are each time updated when needed. To improve the emulation proces. With those tools I have more and better options to increase the desktop size for instance. But I can't play a game on it that uses my DLSS RTX card ability's. That is only possible on my real PC. It is not the intention also to make a real time copy of your real PC. It's just emulating things and does a good job of it I must admit. VMWare had just released a 25H2 version what as the name implies does a better job in running an VM environment on a 25H2 Windows system.
The only reason why I don't use Oracle's VirtualBox is simple. It has difficulties and some strange behaviors. Some are due to the setup proces. I complete all the deeply underneath lying proces to fill in what can be filled in basically. It starts and it and forget to use settings that I explicitly told VirtualBox to execute. Wanted (as an Oracle DBA) setup a VM with VirtualBox and install Oracle Linux 9 for instance. (Their own product!!) It would not boot in a GUI environment and forgets the root password I gave in advance. Told this to Oracle themself about it. Do they listen? No... With VMWare? No problems whatsoever!!!..... Both products rival each other. Does basically the same thing. Are both free of charge to use it on personal basis. But VMWare does a better job then VirtualBox I must say. Straight out the box!

And there is Hyper-V... Crap from MS!!!.... Windows Win11 Pro is capabele of running a basic version of it; Sandbox. You get a VM that's true. When it starts it's like a blank canvas. You do things with it. testing, altering things etc. When you stop, and start it's back again; Again that initial blank canvas. Not a problem. Tuning the startup scripts in such a way that changes registry settings, installing software during startup. Running all the time without any problems...... And then (not because of those adaptations) it gives you an error. Unknown what kind of error and how to fix it. Even Microsoft can't tell me what is wrong with it. (!!! And boy did I asked them...) OK. Uninstall this feature then. Rebooting to make the necessary changes.... Windows: Oops I ran into an unknown problem. Have to undo all the changes I did to uninstall things and we are back again with the same corrupted Sandbox.... The only solution was to save all my personal data and do a fresh install. (I tried an In-Place-Installment; It broke off with an error....)

So testing this scenario on a VM has no use. That can only be done on a real PC.

Yes, the images look proper on my phone and other android phone (like Samsung)
I did zipped and uploaded more photo to google drive in later post (last post in page 1). I'm sure they are original photos from my phone (already do checksum).

My laptop is lenovo thinkpad, can play HEVC video and show HEIC photo without any additional installation (maybe the manufactor already paid license fee and pre-install the codec)

hello, same as you. I got my pictures HEIC from my xiaomi 15 red. I chatGpt this and here is what I got to solve this :
1) move wrong pictures in one specific folder.
2) in the same folder, create
2-A) fix_heic_colr_redlook.bat

Batch:

echo [BAT] Install Python, or run from a terminal where python works.

echo.
echo [BAT] Running patcher...
echo.

python fix_heic_colr_redlook.py --recursive --verbose

I'm finding that ChatGPT and Claude.AI very helpful to me to write Powershell scripts that save me lots and lots of time. I don't qualify as even a Powershell newbie. Always meant to learn it, and then AI came along.
