Issues with winsat Resolution and Direct3D Performance

Hello everyone,

I'm currently working on a project involving `winsat`, and I wanted to share some challenges I've encountered with this command.

From my research, it seems that when running `winsat formal` from CMD/Powershell, the command sets the resolution to 1280x1024. I’ve found that this resolution is hardcoded into the winsat tool for certain tests of D3D, and attempts to change it using commands like `-fullscreen` haven't worked as expected. For example, using `winsat d3d -width 1920 -height 1080` does seem to execute, but the results are consistently the same:
> Run Time 00:00:00.00
> Direct3D Batch Performance 42.00 F/s
> Direct3D Alpha Blend Performance 42.00 F/s
> Direct3D ALU Performance 42.00 F/s
> Direct3D Texture Load Performance 42.00 F/s
> Direct3D Geometry Performance 42.00 F/s
> Direct3D Constant Buffer Performance 42.00 F/s
> Dshow Video Encode Time 0.00000 s
> Dshow Video Decode Time 0.00000 s
> Media Foundation Decode Time 0.00000 s
If, I try to execute `winsat d3d -width 1920 -height 1080` these results from a single command it doens't saves in XML format but it shows the results on CMD/Powershell. My goal is to use the screen’s native resolution for the Direct3D tests instead of the default 1280x1024, but I’m running into those issues:

1. Applying the resolution: I can't seem to get `winsat formal` to use resolutions other than 1280x1024 effectively.
2. Direct3D scores: All Direct3D performance metrics are consistently showing a value of 42.00 F/s, and video performance metrics are 0.0000 s, with a run time of 00:00:00.00.
Does anyone have insights or solutions for making winsat work correctly at the screen’s native resolution and get the Video Encode/Decoder working? It appears that the Direct3D section might not be functioning as intended. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Additionally, as a token of appreciation, I will mention the website and the username of those who assist me in this troubleshooting of the program.

Hello @CrisMod and welcome to ElevenForum. :-)

It might be easier to just use a benchmark?
They have a GUI, are free, and have tons of settings you can use.

Like maybe one of these... my favorite is the Heaven benchmark.

You can even compare your results with others...

Thank you@Ghost and thanks for the welcome,

I know all those programs, but I really wish to resurect Winsat, later I will show my project to the community.....

Sorry, if I insist but my focus it's on Winsat for my actual project :).

Anyway,
while investigating, I discovered in the winsat documentation related to video encoding and decoding that the command responsible for this functionality is
Code:
winsat mfmedia -input c:\windows\performance\winsat\winsat.wmv -nopmp
. However, in Windows 11, I couldn't find the
Code:
winsat.wmv
file in
Code:
c:\windows\performance\winsat\
. After digging deeper, I turned on a my old PC with Windows 7 and found the following files, which I'll show below. In contrast, in Windows 11, there are only the DataStore folder and the winsat.log file.
I tried copying the additional files from Windows 7 to Windows 11, but the video encoding and decoding still don't work. The same video-related command,
Code:
winsat mfmedia -input c:\windows\performance\winsat\winsat.wmv -nopmp
, works fine in Windows 7 but not in Windows 11. Could it be that a video-related component has been removed? It would be interesting to know if it's possible to restore that component.Screenshot 2024-08-20 173532.png

I looked up Winsat. And the MS "Learn" page says it was a Windows Vista thing.

I ran Winsat d3d in an elevated command prompt, and got this...
I get the same in elevated powershell

Maybe you should try contacting Microsoft, and seeing what they have to say?

:giggle: Yes it is, but almost of it's components still working, just I would like to understand if there is a way to manipulate the Video side commands and some D3D componets commands, anyhow the D3D componets that are in full score are for the OS graphic perfomances (not big deal if doesn't works, as our days hardware; but was just some more mesauremant to get), the rest still working well.

If not possible, I will keep as it is, and that's it .
