So how would I know if the total kaspersky code on amazon us site would work or not? My kaspersky total is now expired.

Also my plan was the 5 device plan.

So if i buy kaspersky total from amazon us site and then receive the code, then activate it, it might not work? So it would only work when I am located in the US? Any issue if I buy the kaspersky total but buy the 3 device plan instead?

Thing is I am thinking it has more to do with which kaspersky total region you have downloaded on your laptop and less so your location?

Thus imagine you being in another country and download kaspersky total. Then if you order it from amazon us... that wouldn't work since the kaspersky total you have installed in your computer is another country? But if it is kaspersky total already installed on your laptop when you was in the us but now you are outside the us, that would work?

Do most agree kaspersky total is better then the free windows defender though?

The thing is i know it depends on what sites you go to etc and that is more important. But what if you accidentally click on a link or open a file? Surely kaspersky total would protect you more than windows defender right?

Again I am not talking about how you go online and just randomly click on things or download files you have no clue about. I mean like if you might have opened a file or email or pdf file but then it might have malware. Would kaspersky total protect you more then windows defender? Now obviously if you are very careful about any file you download or click or open, then windows defender would be more than enough. But what if you sometimes click on something or open a file and something like that. Such that you are not careful. Is kaspersky total or any other av better than windows defender?

The only people likely to agree with that statement are those that are already committed to using Kaspersky, i.e. audience bias.

While I accept that 'organisations' may believe they need to demonstrate use of 'added security measures' I very much doubt that the major institutions would choose to rely on the common 'market street' software available to the general public. As a 'personal user', I've only used built-in OS security features (+ common sense online) for more than 10 years on Windows, macOS, and various Linux distributions without incident, so I obviously don't accept the statement.

It is, of course, easily possible to complement built-in security with the occasional use of secondary stand-alone on-demand scanners for added confidence building, or when a specific threat is prevalent. These are readily available and are normally freeware. Virus Total can also be used for checking any 'suspect' packages prior to use; but no individual 'solution' can fully protect a system from a careless user.

Does anyone really believe that a 'professional' hacker would release their malicious code into the wild without first testing against easy detection/removal by the common commercial scanners? In fact, honest 'ethical' hackers, working legitimately, get paid for defeating protection, so non-ethical hackers aren't going to miss that trick.

Let say you accidentally clicked on a link on google ads or youtube. Or you opened an exe file or opened a pdf file that contains malware. Will windows defender protect you? What about kaspersky total?

I assume kaspersky total will let you know if you do indeed open the file, then it will most likely contain malware? Could it tell from the exe file or pdf file? Or only if you open it? But if it has malware and you open it, kaspersky total will protect you or not?

So there is no difference between kaspersky total compared to defender then? I thought kaspersky total protects you more when it comes to malware and if you click on things? Surely kaspersky total catches more things than windows defender?

So let say you go and download a torrent. I do not do this though. But if you do this and you don't know if it has malware or not, would defender protect you just as good as kaspersky total? So both would tell you before you open the file, that it might have malware but if you open it anyway, kaspersky total and defender does the same thing? So kaspersky wouldn't protect you if you open malware file?

So you are saying when you are going to open a file or program or pdf file, if there is malware there, will kaspersky total protect your computer or not?

I know about that message that shows up when you open an exe program and how it says are you sure you want to open it... this was the message back then when I used windows defender. So does this happen with kaspersky total?

So if you click on a link but not intentionally, will kaspersky total protect you or not? Let say someone sent you an attachment whether it is a file or pdf file or picture and you opened it because you thought it was your friend who sent you it via email....but it was not. Will kaspersky total protect you when you download the file? What about when you open the file? So say the file has malware. If you download it.. let say it is a pdf file... do you have malware? Or only if you open the file? But when you open the file, will kaspersky total protect you? Same situation but now with windows defender.

Your question has been answered by @kelper. Both protect you. Using Kaspersky sends money to Russia. Defender does not. I use Defender.

You stated in your first post that you've been using Kaspersky Total for the past year, so it's strange that you are asking such basic questions about the product.

So my subscription is going to expire soon again. I use kaspersky total because even though I don't visit dangerous sites, I want it in case because if you click on links or things like that, does it protect you better than windows defender? The other issue is the cost is a lot now compared to back then.

Anyone else use kaspersky and feel good about it? Again I don't visit dangerous sites on my computer but sometimes you can click on links so want to know if it does offer better protection. Like you open an email link or file by mistake etc. How much better is it compared to windows defender?

Using Russian software is a bold decision. I wouldn't bother renewing the licence. Save your money, uninstall the Kaspersky software and just use Defender which is fine.

Defender is fine; if you want to add some extra protection, maybe add Malwarebytes Pro into the mix or/and change your DNS provider to a malware-blocking one such as Quad9 or Cloudflares 1.1.1.2/1.0.0.2
