UPDATE 10/21: KB5006746 Windows 11 Cumulative Update Preview Build 22000.282 - Oct. 21

October 12, 2021 - KB5006674 (OS Build 22000.258)

For information about Windows update terminology, see the article about the types of Windows updates and the monthly quality update types. For an overview of Windows 11 (original release), see its update history page.

Note Follow @WindowsUpdate to find out when new content is published to the release information dashboard.

Highlights

  • Updates security for your Windows operating system.

Improvements and fixes

This security update includes quality improvements. Key changes include:
  • Addresses known compatibility issues between some Intel “Killer” and “SmartByte” networking software and Windows 11 (original release). Devices with the affected software might drop User Datagram Protocol (UDP) packets under certain conditions. This creates performance and other issues for protocols based on UDP.
For example, some websites might load slower than others on the affected devices, which might cause videos to stream slower in certain resolutions. VPN solutions based on UDP might also be slower.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new fixes contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

For more information about the resolved security vulnerabilities, please refer to the Security Update Guide website and the October 2021 Security Updates.

Windows 11 servicing stack update - 22000.190

  • This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

Known issues in this update

Microsoft is not currently aware of any issues with this update.

How to get this update

Before installing this update
Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates and Servicing Stack Updates (SSU): Frequently Asked Questions.

Install this update
Release ChannelAvailableNext Step
Windows Update and Microsoft UpdateYesNone. This update will be downloaded and installed automatically from Windows Update.
Windows Update for BusinessYesNone. This update will be downloaded and installed automatically from Windows Update in accordance with configured policies.
Microsoft Update CatalogYesTo get the standalone package for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.
Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)YesThis update will automatically sync with WSUS if you configure Products and Classifications as follows:
Product: Windows 11
Classification: Security Updates

If you want to remove the LCU
To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

It's not even a calculated estimate, more like just a rough guide. I've never seen it say anything other than "5 min".

I once read an article by someone who programmed various installation 'progress indicators'. He said they mean nothing - they're just numbers to make it look like things are moving along. So when you're 'stuck' at '22%', you are neither stuck, nor at 22%.

The time it takes to download and install updates via WU are affected by lots of things. The idea has been, from the beginning, that you are not supposed to sit there watching the 'progress' - just let it happen in the background. But every Patch Tuesday we have dozens of people reporting how they were stuck here and there, and it took this and that long, and that it was really quick for me this time, or that it was really slow for me this time, etc. etc.

But I guess a lot of us have too much time on our hands, and/or are somewhat OCD

I turn on Task Manager and watch there. When progress is apparently 'stuck' I can see very well that TiWorker is clocking up high CPU and disk activity, so can just relax and let it get on with it

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Finished it too on my PC. Need to note that first attempt to install this update froze in 69% and eventually failed, because I decided to restart PC after waiting about 30 min (all other today's updates were successfully installed before). However, check for update again caused re-downloading the files, and second time it was successful. I suppose that first time something was damaged.
Possibly failing hardware. (drive or internet hardware)

Looks like (so far) MS hasn't made good on their threats to withhold updates for an unsupported install. (y)

for now, MS is bluffing on withholding updates to unsupported systems.
all bark but no bite
we'll see next year in 2022 when they issue the 1st feature update

Since I'm running a Windows-11 version downloaded on the BETA channel, should the updates contain improvements of some type? This Cumulative Update looks to be solely Security related, as was typical for Windows 10 every patch Tuesday. (2nd Tues of every month)

No other updates have arrived for Windows-11 since I put this BETA version on my laptop, about 20 days ago. That's strange for a brand new Operating System, is it not?

Not strange at all, the improvements are tested in the DEV channel first and then they make their way to other channels or stay on DEV until the next feature release. At the moment BETA and RP are exactly the same build and I wouldn't expect anything new until next year.

I presume that this is pure speculation.

(it's not of great concern to me. My desktop PCs are fully compliant.)
This video was released today, a layman's explanation of why Win 11 has these requirements, requirements that have been 'optional' throughout Win 10.

Seems like it's a big part of the plan, Win 11 being more than just a face-lift.
Sure, yes there's speculation, but I get the feeling this is something that they will not just 'lay down' for customers running what is essentially close to 5 year old PC hardware.
In cell phone/tablet terms that's 'ancient', but no one seems to kick up such a fuss when their aging device is no longer supported.
And flagship phones cost close to entry level laptops, so I don't get the 'noise.

If your current PC isn't compatible, just use Win 10 until you have compatible hardware.
Or even better, use a 'skin' that makes Win 10 look like Win 11.

I have an installation USB for 22000.194, but I'm doing a clean install on a new SSD today or tomorrow, and would like the installation to result in 258. How can I tell what version I'm going to get if I use the MCT from

I have an installation USB for 22000.194, but I'm doing a clean install on a new SSD today or tomorrow, and would like the installation to result in 258. How can I tell what version I'm going to get if I use the MCT from
to get a new USB package today?
You can go to UUPDump and get the ISO for .258 and use that. I was able to get that yesterday.
