Highlights​

  • Addresses security issues for your Windows operating system.

Improvements​

This security update includes improvements that were a part of update KB5012643 (released April 25, 2022) and also addresses the following issues:
  • Addresses a known issue that might cause your screen to flicker if you start your device in Safe Mode. Components that rely on explorer.exe, such as File Explorer, the Start menu, and the taskbar, might be affected and appear unstable.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

Windows 11 servicing stack update - 22000.652​

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

IT adminsAfter installing the Windows updates released January 11, 2022 or later Windows versions on an affected version of Windows, recovery discs (CD or DVD) created by using the Backup and Restore (Windows 7) app in Control Panel might be unable to start.

Recovery discs that were created by using the Backup and Restore (Windows 7) app on devices which have installed Windows updates released before January 11, 2022 are not affected by this issue and should start as expected.

Note No third-party backup or recovery apps are currently known to be affected by this issue
We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.
IT adminsAfter installing this update, some .NET Framework 3.5 apps might have issues or might fail to open. Affected apps are using certain optional components in .NET Framework 3.5, such as Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) and Windows Workflow (WWF) components.You can mitigate this issue by re-enabling .NET Framework 3.5 and the Windows Communication Foundation in Windows Features. For instructions, please see Enable the .NET Framework 3.5 in Control Panel. Advanced users or IT admins can do this programmatically using an elevated Command Prompt (run as administrator) and running the following commands:

dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:netfx3 /all

dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:WCF-HTTP-Activation

dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:WCF-NonHTTP-Activation
All usersAfter installing this update, Windows devices that use certain GPUs might cause apps to close unexpectedly or cause intermittent issues that affect some apps that use Direct3D 9. You might also receive an error in Event Log in Windows Logs/Applications, and the faulting module is d3d9on12.dll and the exception code is 0xc0000094.This issue is resolved using Known Issue Rollback (KIR). Please note that it might take up to 24 hours for the resolution to propagate automatically to consumer devices and non-managed business devices. Restarting your Windows device might help the resolution apply to your device faster. For enterprise-managed, devices that have installed an affected update and encountered this issue can resolve it by installing and configuring the special Group Policy listed below. For information on deploying and configuring these special Group Policies, see How to use Group Policy to deploy a Known Issue Rollback.

IT adminsAfter installing updates released May 10, 2022 on domain controllers, you might see authentication failures on the server or client for some services. These services include Network Policy Server (NPS), Routing and Remote access Service (RRAS), Radius, Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP), and Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol (PEAP). An issue has been found related to how the domain controller manages the mapping of certificates to machine accounts.

Note Installation of the May 10, 2022 updates on client Windows devices and non-domain controller Windows Servers will not cause this issue. This issue only affects servers that are used as domain controllers.
The preferred mitigation for this issue is to manually map certificates to a machine account in Active Directory. For instructions, see Certificate mapping.

Note The instructions are the same for mapping certificates to user or machine accounts in Active Directory. If the preferred mitigation will not work in your environment, see KB5014754—Certificate-based authentication changes on Windows domain controllers for other possible mitigations in the "SChannel registry key" section.

Note Any other mitigation except the preferred mitigations might lower or disable security hardening.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

I only needed first command - phew!

Hmm, that command installs Net Framework 3.5....


It's not clear why that would fix you issues, though I'm glad to hear it has. I don't have it installed, yet my Hyper-V works without it....

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

Teams was also broken, but unlike Hyper-V was not fixed. I then did the "if all else fails, reboot" method and lo and behold Teams is back.

There is going to be a lot of ordinary consumers out there tomorrow furious at MS if statistically several have had issues here, multiply that as a fraction of a billion users.

MS should withdraw this update immediately but by tomorrow the damage will be done. As I said earlier, why on earth did they not do this on RP Channel first which would only affect RP users, and there would be damage limitation.

Cue lots of Linuxians crawling out of the woodwork......

Does it make any difference on how an individual upgrades? I just opened win update and said 'do it' and left it alone until it asked me to do restart on all three that were there.

I lost Event Viewer (unable to initiate snap-in). Rechecking .NET Framework 3.5 in Windows features solved the problem. After checking, windows downloaded files and reloaded snap-in. Update must be removing old .NET files that their own operating system still needs?

@Garrett, just a few comments about .NET Framework 3.5...
I opened Event Viewer, and it seemed to open and run just fine. Under Turn Windows Features on or off, .NET Framework 3.5 was unchecked.

Are some specific areas within Event Viewer I can check to see if my system duplicates your situation?

My Event Viewer also loads and runs just fine. I've updated all 3 of my computers and there are no problems whatsoever.

I wonder if loading apps to modify the Windows 11 OS to look and work like Windows 10 has anything to do with all these problems?

I don't have any apps to make modifications to make Windows 11 look like Windows 10. I have ExplorerPatcher installed on my Lenovo laptop and it seemed to work just fine as well.

@Garrett, just a few comments about .NET Framework 3.5...
I opened Event Viewer, and it seemed to open and run just fine. Under Turn Windows Features on or off, .NET Framework 3.5 was unchecked.

Are some specific areas within Event Viewer I can check to see if my system duplicates your situation?
No, event viewer snap in would not load. When it did come back there was zero errors showing. I always run event viewer immediately after major updates so something linking this glitch to todays updates. Was interesting that after checking NET 3.5 in Windows Features it downloaded files from MS to allow NET 3.5.
UPDATE: As an experiment I just unchecked .NET 3.5 in Windows Features and everything is still working! Go figure! Maybe activating it fixed the problem with the snap in not working but not needed for continuation?

Using Stardock Start 11, and it seems to stick following this update, even stopping getting to the desktop!

UPDATE: Am able to get task manager up, there is a black screen. Have reverted to image taken earlier today.

3 Laptops Updated, 2 are fine. The third has the same problem as my main desktop so reverted that too.
Installed the update and rebooted to a black screen? Same problem here, no desktop. The Explorer process stops responding and nothing is running. I'm not using any Windows/desktop mod software.

Stardock issued an update yesterday. No problems here. I updated Start11 before I applied the windows update.

Why bother to make W11 look and feel like W10 when "The real thing" is available and will be current until 2025 anyway. Nothing wrong in having "Dual Boot" W10 / W11 if you want both OS'es -- can easily be done from the same single disk via VHDX files (not VM's) or run both concurrently as VM's. Boot menu at start up -- choose "Your Poison" -- no need to go into BIOS to select boot disk for the OS if done this way. I also have 3 versions of W11 on the same disk and Windows PE (the Ms version).
