Windows Secure Boot certificate expiration

Important

Secure Boot certificates used by most Windows devices started to expire on June 2026. Microsoft has been updating these certificates on PCs and non-managed business devices for the past months. Devices that haven't received the newer certificates will continue to start, and standard Windows updates will continue to install. We will continue to install the newer certificates via Windows updates in the coming months.

End of updates

Windows 11, version 24H2 Home and Pro editions will reach end of updates on October 13, 2026. Devices running these editions will no longer receive fixes for known issues, time zone updates, technical support, or monthly security and preview updates containing protections from the latest security threats. Enterprise and Education editions remain supported until October 12, 2027.

To stay protected and up to date, we recommend you upgrade to the latest version of Windows 11.

Certificate deployment via Windows updates continues across supported PCs and non-managed business devices in the coming months.
  • [Mouse] Fixed: This update addresses an issue that prevented customized mouse cursor settings, including pointer style and color, from displaying correctly. Selected cursor options and colors now work as expected.
  • [Personalization] Fixed: This update addresses an issue where desktop background and other personalization settings might not load correctly, causing the desktop background to appear black.
  • [Teams and Outlook on Arm64 PCs] Fixed: This update addresses an issue that could cause Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Outlook to unexpectedly close on Arm64-based PCs.
  • [Date and Time] This update adjusts Morocco Standard Time to reflect Morocco's transition to permanent UTC+00:00 effective September 20, 2026. This change ensures that the correct local time is displayed after the transition.
  • [Remote Desktop Audio Redirection] This update addresses an issue affecting Remote Desktop audio redirection that could prevent audio from a remote session from playing on the local device in certain configurations.
  • [OMA-DM Client Logging] This update improves diagnostic logging for the OMA-DM client, providing additional information to help troubleshoot device management server connection issues.

Known issues in this update​

Symptoms
After installing the September 2026 security update (KB5124008), applications that use HCS-managed virtual machines might experience issues when sharing host folder with Linux VMs using Plan9. Affected virtual machines start normally, but folders shared from the Windows host using Plan9 do not appear or cannot be accessed in the guest environment.

Applications or sandbox environments that depend on these shared folders might display an error indicating that no Plan9 drive shares were mounted. Claude Cowork and the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) are two of the applications affected by this issue. Standard Hyper-V virtual machines that do not use the Plan9 feature are not affected by this issue.

Symptoms

After installing the September 2026 Windows security update, some organizations might experience issues with Remote Desktop Services (RDS).

In some environments, RDS might become unstable, resulting in RDP connections failing after several minutes, sign-in issues, or servers hanging at "Please wait for the Remote Desktop Configuration". Related tools, including Microsoft Management Console (MMC), RDS Licensing Diagnoser, and File Explorer might also become unresponsive. Additionally, the Windows Update page might stop responding and continuously display a loading indicator.

Microsoft Support: IT administrators who need an immediate workaround should contact Microsoft Support for Business for assistance.

Resolution

Microsoft is working to address this issue in a future Windows update and will provide additional details when available.

How to get this update​

Before you install this update​

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates.

Deployment

If you deploy dynamic updates such as this update to an existing Windows image, ensure the boot.stl file is included as part of the installation media. Failure to include the file might prevent devices from successfully starting from the installation media and can result in error code 0xc0430001.

Note: The boot.stl file is used during Secure Boot validation and must match the Windows version and architecture of the image you are updating.
To ensure the boot.stl file is included as part of the installation media, do one of the following:
  • Use the Update WinPE script to update an existing Windows image. (Recommended)
  • Manually copy the boot.stl file from the device Windows\Boot\EFI folder to the corresponding folder on your installation media before deploying the update.

As I've mentioned elsewhere, File History is another dumb idea from MS.
MS has been trying since the XP days to come up with something better than 3rd party backup software.
They haven't succeeded.

Their attempts either don't work, or are just disguised data mining cr*p.

(There's actually more to this story: I tried to repair via Windows Update earlier in the week - with Windows suddenly having changed the order of Disk0/Disk1/Disk2 drives afterwards [WTF?!], then seeing a crash / 9F bugcheck out of nowhere [never experienced it before, so some device drivers must have been changed/reverted], and then experiencing Windows Host crashes every time I opened Start Menu, which broke the camel's back eventually. Also, I had to disable Secure Boot temporarily due to the above restore...).


A bit unsure what to do next really, currently Windows Updates remain blocked for a week...

Probably will create another image - as I just spent an hour re-installing everything that had to be updated since the end of July - and then we'll see...

KB5124008 disappeared my external USB audio device (Lexicon Lambda). The Lambda was still there in Device Manager under USB controllers, but was not selectable as audio device on the Sound devices dialog (mmsys.cpl). I eventually rolled back the update, but that did not help. Luckily I had a clone of the system disk so I could restore the whole thing to an older state, which got the audio working again.

Strange thing is, somehow KB5124008 managed to install itself during a restart, and now Update History tells me that KB5124008 has been successfully installed, while the audio device is still functional. However, Windows Update tells me to restart to install KB5124008, which I am reluctant to do. Is there a way to quit this?

EDIT: I now saw Brink's post above. That's what happened to me (W11 25H2, 26200.8457)

EDIT^2: This update is like a virus! It keeps installing itself whenever I boot up, even though I have disabled updates! This is horrible!!

It is not an consumer issue. MS did changed their CBS engine (deep inside Windows) with build 8655. If anyone can fix this; it's Microsoft itself. You can't influence the CBS engine to behave otherwise. You can reinstall or repair your system as many times as you want; this issue wouldn't go away. (As long as your build is higher than 26200.8524) This issues is around since 8655. The only thing to resolve this is to stay on 26200.8524. (The build before 8655) But that's is not a realistic solution if you want to stay up to date....

I noticed that change because with 8655 I saw new lines inside the CBS.log than weren't there with the previous builds.
Maybe it would be resolved when 26H2 is introduced???? (Maybe they ignored my Feedback because in the near future 26H2 will be introduced??)

Mhmmm... Installed a insider-preview build 29300.9278 inside a VM. The normal install proces. During the install it saw an update and downloaded that one.
After being finished the build went up to 26300.9445 (like 25H2), Ran the update again and it installed some additional updates. (e.a. FrameWork, Security and Defender antivirus patterns.)

After that I ran SFC /Scannow. All OK. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth. All OK.
And now DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth for the 1st time.... Nope. It underwent the same procedure as with 26200.9945.
2 times downloading 270Mb. It used later one the first one, the 2nd one was refused by the upload server "You got it already! So why asking it again???"
And yes again it found: "CSI FileFlags Corrupt: 1288". Again it repaired those FileFlags because a second run behaved the same as the 1st run but it found no FileFlags corrupt. Issue resolved.

But the 8655 CBS-Engine is still there. And... The option to place the taskbar on other positions isn't there even the change of the startmenu is absent.
If they don't shape-up; 26H2 will have this bug also. So to be continued.....

(Will contact the Helpdesk guy again at MS that despite his advice to file an official report through the Feedback Hub nobody at MS was bothered to look into this matter. 👺)

Microsoft has not yet responded to this issue. I tested these Windows OS builds, and File History did not work properly.:coffee:
