Hello Windows Insiders!

Today we are making Windows 11, version 22H2 Build 22621 available in the Release Preview Channel for Windows Insider Program for Business participants to validate on devices in their organizations.

Commercial devices* configured for the Release Preview Channel via the Windows Insider Program Settings page or via Windows Update for Business policy, whether through Microsoft Intune or through Group Policy, will automatically be offered Windows 11, version 22H2 as an optional update provided that the device(s) meet the hardware requirements. Windows 11, version 22H2 is also now available via Windows Server Update Service and Azure Marketplace. You can learn more about deploying and validating this upcoming version of Windows 11 here. Should any issues arise, IT admins in these organizations can request free Microsoft Support. This support offer is intended to help resolve issues with commercial-specific scenarios and is limited to the Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions.

*Note: We consider a device a commercial device if it is not running the Windows 11 Home edition AND is being managed by an IT administrator (whether via Microsoft Endpoint Manager or other management solution) or has a volume license key or commercial ID or is joined to a domain.

We are also making this build available to any Windows Insider in the Release Preview Channel via our “seeker” experience in Windows Update. This means Insiders currently in the Release Preview Channel that meet the Windows 11 hardware requirements can go to Settings and Windows Update and choose to download and install Windows 11, version 22H2 Build 22621 if they want. Once an Insider updates their PC to Windows 11, version 22H2, they will continue to automatically receive new servicing updates through Windows Update (the typical monthly update process). Can we no longer install this build on the Release Preview?

I enrolled in the Release Preview today, but I only get KB5014668 (Build 22000.776) from Windows Update. I don't seem to have the option to install 22H2.

Looks like your PC isn't ready for 22H2 yet, and will remain on 21H2 for now.

We are also making this build available to any Windows Insider in the Release Preview Channel via our “seeker” experience in Windows Update. This means Insiders currently in the Release Preview Channel that meet the Windows 11 hardware requirements can go to Settings and Windows Update and choose to download and install Windows 11, version 22H2 Build 22621 if they want. It's a matter of either waiting for it to be available via Windows Update, or try manually updating using the ISO file linked in the first post.

Updating via the ISO will erase all data, no? In which case, that would be an undesirable solution.

Windows 22H2 was offered, accepted, downloaded, installed successfully this evening on our Laptop that's on the Win-11 Release Preview channel.

Took about 30 minutes for the full update cycle. Manually restarted again and it said (again) installing updates, during the shutdown and the restart phase. But the little percentage counter went to 100% in less than 10 seconds each time during this second restart.

Other than it changing the desktop to an ugly Olive Green color, and resetting the Windows Internet settings back to "default" (had to run TCP-IP Tweaker again), nothing much appears to be different thus far. A GOOD thing I suppose.

Please -- usually @cereberus is good at answering this type of question -- what's the min difference between DEV (25xxx) builds and the 226... builds. Is it worth having both (I've disk space coming out of my ears - up to 20 TB spare space so tht's not an issue - and with vhdx physical files it's a doddle to be able to boot into multiple different physical Windows systems ) .
My feeling is to choose one or the other, have a "bog standard" W11 version too and I keep a W10 system for work / office type VPN access when using my own equipment on assignments when "WFH" or remote working.

Any other comments on this issue welcome-- please express feelings - and having several Windows installs is actually simple and you keep activation on all of them too. However one does't need too many !!! so where to draw the balance. and currently I can't decide between 226,,, and 25xxx builds,

The biggest difference of all is that 22621 is currently in the Release Preview channel. In due course, when 22H2 gets its public release, it will be possible to leave Insiders and continue to get updates for 22621 on the General Availability channel like any other RTM install.

Should you wish to leave the Dev channel builds 25xxx and return to an RTM build your only option would be a clean install.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

currently I have both (using the vhdx method) -- As the 22621 build isn't "reg" to Windows insider I'm not given update to "DEV" version (which is fine) - another advantage of using local account instead of ms account. I use UUPDUMP and minor updates with WU on that build and for the 25xx builds I use the standard WU.

My real query was is it still worth the effort of maintining these two builds or just keep the 25xx one and the "bog standard" 226.. RTM one. (I.e the one that is currently installed on new computers supplied by OEM's).

22621 isn't currently being installed on new OEM computers. It's currently released to maufacturers only for testing driver and hardware compatibility for the coming 22H2 release. New machines still come with 22000 21H2 pre-installed, that won't change until sometime later this year.

I run both Dev and Beta/RP builds as VMs, and to be honest I see little difference at present. For my physical machines with 22H2 I'm sticking with just using the 22621 build.

I'm not actually registered with the Insider program either. I use this to switch channels.

22621 isn't currently being installed on new OEM computers. It's currently released to maufacturers only for testing driver and hardware compatibility for the coming 22H2 release. New machines still come with 22000 21H2 pre-installed, that won't change until sometime later this year.

I run both Dev and Beta/RP builds as VMs, and to be honest I see little difference at present. For my physical machines with 22H2 I'm sticking with just using the 22621 build.

I'm not actually registered with the Insider program either. I use this to switch channels.

Thanks for the info -- still these days it's not really any problem maintaining a few builds in my case as I don't run a load of apps on Windows other than Office pro LTSC 2031, photoshop, W.A.M.P, SKY GO, Hardware video capture device, Teams and some ODBC connectors for query to MySQL / MariaDB databases.

I'm tempted though to also install the base 22000 21H1 build as well. My typical Windows size is around 35GB -- so allocating say 60-70GB for each Windows install (I think W11 requires 48GB minimum whether you use it or not) on a spare 1TB SSD - I can install a whole slew of them. !!

I also use the "VHDX" method for Virtual machines -- I have one std Virtual machine and from within it at boot time can also select which "Virtual Windows build" to boot. Running on the same machine with identical "Virtual hardware" this saves the hassle of maintaining multiple VM's -- I just save the "Virtual HDD". I rarely if ever need to run these things "concurrently" so this method works ideally for me - and cloning to REAL is simple also -- you need to update the "real bootloader" (bcdboot) if you do it this way though.

22H2 (Dev, Beta or RP) has features that were missing in 21H2 (rushed out too soon?). Particularly annoying for me was the lack of drag-and-drop to running apps on the taskbar. I used that a lot in W10.

Also, in 22H2 the ability to group icons on the Start menu has returned, along with being able to reduce the Recommended section to just a single line, leaving room for more icons. IMHO 22621 is what 22000 should have been like if it had the time to be fully developed before release.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

I have bitten the bullet and updated main OS to 22H2 (as RP). I have selected option to leave Insider for main Host OS when next RTM comes out. I see little value in maintaining build 22000 any more. I have it backed up in A vhdx if I ever need to check old version but I cannot see why particularly.

I certainly do not see point of maintaining 2 RP Insiders when one will get ditched in a few weeks time.

I'm being a bit more cautious, I'm staying on 21H2 for my main machines but hoping for and looking forward to a very early release of 22H2 to the general availability channel. I'm already running it as a vhdx on another of my laptops.

As I have stated and I posted on insider. Upgrading to this version blocked all my files on One Drive from being accessible. I am also weary of this update simply because I have heard nothing regarding my One Drive issue.

I just clean installed again on a brand new machine and One Drive has no issues with 21H2.
