Win Update KB5015882 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Build 22000.832 - July 21

  • Staff
UPDATE 8/9:

July 21, 2022—KB5015882 (OS Build 22000.832) Preview

For information about Windows update terminology, see the article about the types of Windows updates and the monthly quality update types. For an overview of Windows 11 (original release), see its update history page.

Note Follow @WindowsUpdate to find out when new content is published to the Windows release health dashboard.

Highlights

  • New! Gives you the option to receive urgent notifications when focus assist is on. Focus assist is like a do not disturb mode that hides notifications.
  • New! Gives you the option to update to a newer Windows 11 version at the very first startup of Windows if your device is eligible.
  • Addresses an issue that causes File Explorer to stop working when you use the play and pause keyboard buttons on certain devices.
  • Addresses an issue that causes File Explorer to stop working when you use the Start menu’s context menu (Win+X) and an external monitor is connected to your device.
  • Addresses an issue that displays a blank window that you cannot close when you hover over the search icon on the taskbar.
  • Addresses an issue that prevents certain troubleshooting tools from opening.

Improvements

This non-security update includes quality improvements. Key changes include:
  • New! Provides the ability for you to consent to receive urgent notifications when focus assist is on.
  • New! Provides the option for eligible devices to update to a newer Windows 11 version during the out-of-box experience (OOBE) when you first sign in. If you choose to update to a newer version, the update process will begin shortly after the update is installed on the device.
  • New! Restores functionality for Windows Autopilot deployment scenarios that are affected by the security mitigation for hardware reuse. This update removes the one-time use restriction for self-deploying mode (SDM) and pre-provisioning (PP). This update also re-enables any User Principal Name (UPN) display in user-driven mode (UDM) deployments for approved manufacturers.
  • Addresses an issue in UIAutomation() that causes an application to stop working.
  • Addresses an issue that prevents the Startup Task API from working as expected for certain apps.
  • Improves the reliability of a push-button reset after an OS upgrade.
  • Addresses an issue that makes the tenant restrictions event logging channel inaccessible if you remove the EN-US language pack.
  • Addresses an issue that causes certificate-based machine account authentication to fail in some circumstances after you install the May 10, 2022 security updates on domain controllers.
  • Addresses an issue that affects the Arm64EC code you build using the Windows 11 software development kit (SDK).
  • Updates the Remove-Item cmdlet to properly interact with Microsoft OneDrive folders.
  • Addresses an issue that prevents certain troubleshooting tools from opening.
  • Addresses an issue that causes port mapping conflicts for containers.
  • Addresses an issue that causes Code Integrity to continue trusting a file after the file has been modified.
  • Addresses an issue that might cause Windows to stop working when you enable Windows Defender Application Control with the Intelligent Security Graph feature turned on.
  • Deploys search highlights to devices. To access the policy for search highlights (on a device that has installed the June 2022 Cumulative Update Preview or July 2022 monthly quality update), go to C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions and locate Search.admx. For your convenience, we will be publishing an updated version of the Administrative Templates (.admx) for Windows 11, version 21H2 to the Microsoft Download Center soon.
  • Addresses an issue that causes explorer.exe to stop working when you use the play and pause keyboard buttons on certain devices.
  • Addresses an issue that causes explorer.exe to stop working when you use the Start menu’s context menu (Win+X) and an external monitor is connected to your device.
  • Addresses an issue that displays a blank window that you cannot close when you hover over the search icon on the taskbar.
  • Reduces the overhead of resource contention in high input/output operations per second (IOPS) scenarios that have many threads contending on a single file.
  • Addresses an issue that causes the Windows profile service to fail sporadically. The failure might occur when signing in. The error message is, “gpsvc service failed to sign in. Access denied”.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

How to get this update

Before installing this update

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates and Servicing Stack Updates (SSU): Frequently Asked Questions.

Install this update

Release ChannelAvailableNext Step
Windows Update or Microsoft UpdateYesGo to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. In the Optional updates available area, you’ll find the link to download and install the update.
Windows Update for BusinessNoNone. These changes will be included in the next security update to this channel.
Microsoft Update CatalogYesTo get the standalone package for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.
Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)NoYou can import this update into WSUS manually. See the Microsoft Update Catalog for instructions.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

Also, I'm on a Local account instead of an MS account, which may be preventing the 6 minute update??
I'm on a local account too for windows login, but I still need to link my insider account to enroll in Release Preview or Beta.
On the box currently at build 22000.832 which is enrolled in R.P. it offers me 22H2 every time I check for updates.
I just ignore it because I already have 22H2 on other machines. 😉

don't know why the MS support article 5015882 has this update listed as build 22000.829 when it actually has 22000.832
gggrrrrrrrrrrrr (the MS support folks need to check their handywork carefully)
They forgot to update the build# on July 21. 🤐
22000.829 was released on July 14 with the same kb5015882, easy confusion and common mistake when they reuse the same kb# with extra updates. 🤬🤬

I had problems with updates and could not get KB5015814 or KB5015882 to install.
So, I tried everything I found in these threads and in Microsoft's site entries.

The only thing that worked for me was a Windows 11 repair install.
After the repair install I ran the Windows Update and installed KB5015882 with no issues.

No - I just am unsure why anyone would ever have thought that there might be a legitimate reason for multiple attempts to break into a system in a very short time, and would not have included some kind of way to prevent that from happening from the early days of networking. Clearly it is a highly desirable feature for Microsoft to add.

Dell says this system is not Windows 11 capable, but Microsoft seems happy with it.
Downloaded via win update, had masses of errors relating to Hypervisor Code Integrity. Went back to ver 795 and downloaded KB5015882 form win catalog and that seems to have fixed these errors. So, using win update screwed up. I really don't need this aggravation.

Was offered and installed CU KB5015882 and Preview for .NET Framework KB5015732, now on build 22000.832
It installed a new Event channel: "ModernDeployment-Diagnostic-Provider"
(ManagementService had some errors that I deleted). DISM online and SFC found no issues. Storage Sense found 2.27 GB redundant Windows Update files that I purged.

It installed a new Event channel: "ModernDeployment-Diagnostic-Provider"
(ManagementService had some errors that I deleted). DISM online and SFC found no issues. Storage Sense found 2.27 GB redundand Windows Update files that I purged.
Interesting. Wonder if we all will get/have that. Lots of reclaimed data!

You have to run Storage Sense, a Windows 11 sequel to Disk Cleanup but cleans the Windows Update cache better:

Ok, I had problems getting KB5015582 to install just like many others. I thought I'd share what I did to make it work. I tried pretty much everything to get this to install short of doing major things like reinstalling windows. I could not fathom why my laptop installed this update with no problems and my desktop gave me nothing but trouble. I found a couple of blogs and forum entries and managed to get KB5015882 to download and install with some trepidation. Here's what I did:
  • Went into Windows Features and turned off NET Framework 3.5
  • Rebooted the system
  • Disabled MalwareBytes' Real-Time Protection
  • Opened the Services.msc and ensured both "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" (BITS) was set to "Auto" and running, and the "Windows Update" service was running and set to "Automatic (Trigger Start)"
  • Downloaded the KB5015582 update from the Microsoft Update Catalog and ran the installer.
    • NOTE: It will take a LONG time for the install process. It will apparently hang at 35% and around 68%, but if you check your CPU usage and look at what's running in the task manager you will see it's actually installing, albeit very slowly.
    • I walked away from my system (for several hours) and sometime while I was gone, it installed and rebooted.
  • Restarted MalwareBytes
  • Re-installed the DOT NET 3.5 in the Windows Features
  • Rebooted the system
  • Checked the Update history which showed the update installed successfully.
Now the odd part: I re-ran Windows Update and it showed I STILL needed to install KB5015582, so I let it go through the download and install again. (Remember, it had already been installed successfully.) It apparently went through that process successfully (Why is anybody's guess). And now, repeated reboots show a successful install and no more "nagware" telling me KB5015582 needs to be installed.

I do not know what was happening underneath all this, but somehow. Windows update felt the first successful install didn't really happen, (maybe since I did it through the catalog). And I don'y know why DOTNET 3.5 had to be disabled/uninstalled. I suspect it may be something in that install script that either didn't work with DOTNET 3.5 or choked on it somehow.

At any rate, everything seems to be fine now, repeated Windows Update queries show I'm up to date.

If anybody can shed some light on why this worked I'd love to know.

Jabiru
