Insider KB5017600 Windows 11 Insider Dev Build 25182.1010 (rs_prerelease) - Aug. 22

UPDATE 8/24:

UPDATE 8/22: We are starting to roll out Cumulative Update Build 25182.1010 (KB5017600). This update does not include anything new and is designed to test our servicing pipeline for builds in the Dev Channel.

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 25182 to the Dev Channel.

TL;DR

  • Starting with Build 25182, the expiration date is now September 15th, 2023. It is recommended Insiders update to this build to avoid build expiration notices.
  • We’re beginning to roll out an update to the Camera app to the Dev Channel that brings native Arm64 support and a new privacy feature. Details below.
  • We are also rolling out a small update for Microsoft Store to the Dev Channel with some improvements. Details below.

Fixes

[General]

  • We fixed the issue that was causing devices with low disk space to receive download error 0x80070001 in Windows Update trying to install the latest Dev Channel build.
  • Fixed an issue leading to some Insiders experiencing a decrease in FPS when playing certain games in recent flights due to the wrong graphics card being used.

[Taskbar]

  • Fixed an issue which could lead to the taskbar overflow flyout unexpectedly appearing on the opposite side of the screen. This was incorrectly noted as fixed in Build 25179.
  • We fixed an issue that was causing the animation on the taskbar that plays when a user switches from using a device in tablet posture to desktop while in overflow to incorrectly show when logging in.
  • Fixed an explorer.exe crash which could happen when determining if the taskbar overflow should display. This could happen when switching out of a full screen game.

[Start]

  • Fixed a Start menu crash that could prevent apps from launching from Start.

[File Explorer]

  • Fixed an issue causing the left-half of the File Explorer title bar to not be draggable via mouse or touch for some Insiders.
  • We fixed an issue causing Home, Documents, Pictures, and potentially other folders to become unexpectedly duplicated in File Explorer’s navigation pane or appear on the desktop.
  • Selecting multiple folders and then using the context menu option to open them in a new tab will now actually do that, rather than opening the first folder in a new tab and all the others in a new window.
  • Updated the logic for Narrator so that if you navigate to a OneDrive folder using the navigation pane in File Explorer, Narrator will now explicitly say it’s a OneDrive folder, and not just something like “YourName – Personal”.

[Other]

  • Fixed an issue which could cause the camera light on a laptop to get stuck on after logging into your PC.
  • Fixed an issue believed to be the root cause of some Insiders seeing bugchecks when opening and copying files from network locations.
NOTE: Some fixes noted here in Insider Preview builds from the Dev Channel may make their way into the servicing updates for the released version of Windows 11.

Known issues

[General]

  • Some games that use Easy Anti-Cheat may crash or cause your PC to bugcheck.
  • We’re looking into reports that audio stopped working for some Insiders after upgrading to the last flight.
  • We’re investigating reports of a few different apps having started crashing in recent builds.
  • [NEW] A small percentage of Insiders are experiencing repeated explorer.exe crashes after attempting to access certain folders on your system on Builds 25179+. Insiders who have the Xbox Dev Kit installed will hit this. We’re working on a fix for this in a future flight.

[File Explorer]

  • The up arrow is misaligned in File Explorer tabs. This will be fixed in a future update.
  • We’re working on the fix for an issue where the search box background in File Explorer might be the opposite color of your current mode.
  • We’re working on the fix for an issue causing the delete key to unexpectedly not work on files in File Explorer. If you encounter this, you should still be able to use the context menu to delete.
  • We’re working on the fix for an issue where the taskbar isn’t able to display if File Explorer is maximized and you have the taskbar set to auto-hide.

[Widgets]

  • Notification badge number may appear misaligned on the taskbar.
  • In some cases, the notification banner for some badging will not appear in the widgets board.

[Printing]

  • We’re working on the fix for an issue in recent Dev Channel flights causing lines to not be included when printing tables from certain apps.

Camera App: Privacy Shutter Support

With the latest release (Version 2022.2207.29.0) available to Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel, Camera can now understand the state of the privacy shutter on supported hardware, like the Microsoft Modern Webcam or the integrated camera on many new Windows 11 laptops. If the shutter is blocking the view or if the laptop lid is closed, Camera app will inform you and offer guidance.

Camera app displaying a warning notification that the camera is blocked.
Camera app displaying a warning notification that the camera is blocked.

We’ve also improved the Camera app experience on Arm64 devices. You’ll see faster and better performance when you use the app.

FEEDBACK: Please file feedback in Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Apps > Camera.

Microsoft Store Update

We are beginning to roll out a Microsoft Store update (version 22207.1401.x) with the following improvements:

Screenshots in search results: You can now view screenshots in search results to help improve your browsing experience.

Install games directly from the Microsoft Store app: When you find a game you like, we install it right from the Microsoft Store, without switching apps.

FEEDBACK: Please file feedback in Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Microsoft Store.

For developers

You can download the latest Windows Insider SDK at aka.ms/windowsinsidersdk.

SDK NuGet packages are now also flighting at NuGet Gallery | WindowsSDK which include:
These NuGet packages provide more granular access to the SDK and better integrate in CI/CD pipelines.

About the Dev Channel

The Dev Channel receives builds that represent long lead work from our engineers with features and experiences that may never get released as we try out different concepts and get feedback. It is important to remember that the builds we release to the Dev Channel should not be seen as matched to any specific release of Windows and the features included may change over time, be removed, or replaced in Insider builds or may never be released beyond Windows Insiders to general customers. For more information, please read this blog post about how we plan to use the Dev Channel to incubate new ideas, work on long lead items, and control the states of individual features.

These aren’t always stable builds, and sometimes you will see issues that block key activities or require workarounds. It is important to make sure you read the known issues listed in our blog posts as we document many of these issues with each flight.

Build numbers are higher in the Dev Channel than the Windows 11 preview builds in the Beta and Release Preview Channels. You will not be able to switch from the Dev Channel to the Beta or Release Preview Channels without doing a clean install back to the released version of Windows 11 currently.

ALSO: Because the Dev and Beta Channels represent parallel development paths from our engineers, there may be cases where features and experiences show up in the Beta Channel first.

The desktop watermark you see at the lower right corner of your desktop is normal for these pre-release builds.

Any full upgrade, even an in-place repair upgrade with an ISO for exactly the same build, should create near enough the same size of Windows.old. Basically it's there to hold a copy of virtually all of your previous Windows folder plus a few other bits. No account is taken of whether the files it puts there are the same as the new ones being installed, they are all backed up regardless.

Look at yours with TreeSize Free and you should see what I see here:

I was able to do the update using W/U on the first try. My printer still works, and Edge Canary is no longer crashing when I'm on MSN.com. I'm not sure if this build fixed it or an if there was a Canary update. I haven't tried my soundcard using the Realtek driver. One thing that has happened was that Macrium Reflect was switched to the free version. This is the third time in the same number of builds. The first time I just shrugged it off. The second time I just thought that it was because I had used an Macrium Image, and that it was made when Macrium wasn't activated. Today Macrium was back to the free version, and I know that it was activated before the update. The one good thing is that I was able to enter the key and even though I got a warning, Macrium Reflect did register all three times. I think next time I'm going to remove the key before doing the next build update. I'm afraid of Macrium not registering because I used the key too many times. Anyone else have Macrium Reflect convert back to the free version?
Nope, my registration stayed intact after the update.

Hello, :-)

Home (Quick access), This PC, and the navigation pane have been updated in File Explorer.

The folders are no longer shown in "This PC", but instead shown separately in the navigation pane under "Home".

You can add the folders back to "This PC" below if wanted though.

Using the driver from Major Geeks got my Realtek driver working but not in the way I expected. I used Device Manager and uninstalled the two Realtek drivers that were listed. Then I ran the install.cmd in the file I downloaded. When it ran, I kept getting errors about files not found. I restarted the computer, and the installer was still running and said to hit any key to continue. I got four or five dots then a blinking line. I let it run for a length of time and it looked like nothing was happening. I finally gave up and restarted the computer. The program still wanted to run but I canceled it. When I looked in the sound devices the Realtek speaker and headphone was still listed. I didn't try to see if I had sound or not, I just chose the sound trouble shooter and when finished the Realtek drivers were still listed. I expected to see the HD sound devices listed. I opened a music file to test and to my surprise my Realtek driver is working. I can once again switch my sound output from the speakers to the USB dongle. Now I just need to see if the Nahimic software is working. It took me a long time to get the equalizer in Nahimic set to my ears.

I'm getting the unsupported processor gsod again with this update (even with the override registry key). Looks like MS are finally killing off any kind of support for older processors as of the previous build (25179) :(

The Realtek driver success didn't last long. I restarted my computer, and the problem came back. I'm to frustrated to try again. The desktop is now back to the HD audio drivers. I have Equalizer APO and Peace installed. If they work with the HD audio drivers, I'm going to give up on the Realtek drivers.

Peace APO is working. Does anyone know of a site or program that I can use to set the equalizer to help with my hearing loss? It took me a very long time to setup the equalizer in Nahimic. A program like I have to setup my Behear headphones would be great.

My Acer Nitro came with DTS sound unbound. It's supposed to be the bees-knees Audio app and not free. It was ok but when I connected my Bluetooth headphones it completely blacked out all the settings including the Equalizer. So I removed that crap and I am now using the free FXsound and haven't looked back. I actually donated to them. You could uninstall Peace/APO and try out FXsound to see if to your liking. Takes a while to adjust to your ears as its a powerful audio enhancer/equalizer and you can over do things :-)

If you don't like it you can always revert to Peace/APO.

Hi there
Try my way -- install via a VM adjusting the "Virtual processor" to one that W11 supports and then convert to a real machine as I've posted in the Virtualisation section.

Here's the VM config including a "Virtual TPM". Boot mode EFI also (enable sec boot in the VM if it's supported on your BIOS both in the VM and on the real machine).

Here's the Windows 11 latest insider build running on HP envy laptop with i5 Gen 6 CPU (not supported)

Here's my link to create the system from a VM to physical (and remain activated) - and to have it on an external SSD as a "Win2GO" if wanted.

Cheers
