Highlights​

  • This update addresses security issues for your Windows operating system.

Improvements​

This security update includes improvements that were a part of update KB5022913 (released February 28, 2023). When you install this KB:
  • This update implements phase three of Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) hardening. See KB5004442. After you install this update, you cannot turn off the changes using the registry key.
  • This update addresses an issue that affects a computer account and Active Directory. When you reuse an existing computer account to join an Active Directory domain, joining fails. This occurs on devices that have installed Windows updates dated October 11, 2022 or later. The error message is, “Error 0xaac (2732): NERR_AccountReuseBlockedByPolicy: ‘An account with the same name exists in Active Directory. Re-using the account was blocked by security policy.’” For more information, see KB5020276.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

Windows 11 servicing stack update - 22621.1344​

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

IT adminsUsing provisioning packages on Windows 11, version 22H2 (also called Windows 11 2022 Update) might not work as expected. Windows might only be partially configured, and the Out Of Box Experience might not finish or might restart unexpectedly. Provisioning packages are .PPKG files which are used to help configure new devices for use on business or school networks. Provisioning packages which are applied during initial setup are most likely to be impacted by this issue. For more information on provisioning packages, please see Provisioning packages for Windows.

Note Provisioning Windows devices using Windows Autopilot is not affected by this issue.

Windows devices used by consumers in their home or small offices are not likely to be affected by this issue.
If you can provision the Windows device before upgrading to Windows 11, version 22H2, this will prevent the issue.

We are presently investigating and will provide an update in an upcoming release.
IT adminsUpdates released February 14, 2023 or later might not be offered from some Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) servers to Windows 11, version 22H2. The updates will download to the WSUS server but might not propagate further to client devices. Affected WSUS servers are only those running Windows Server 2022 which have been upgraded from Windows Server 2016 or Windows Server 2019. This issue is caused by the accidental removal of required Unified Update Platform (UUP) MIME types during the upgrade to Windows Server 2022 from a previous version of Windows Server. This issue might affect security updates or feature updates for Windows 11, version 22H2. Microsoft Configuration Manager is not affected by this issue.To mitigate this issue, please see Adding file types for Unified Update Platform on premises.

We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.
All usersAfter installing this or later updates, Windows devices with some third-party UI customization apps might not start up. These third-party apps might cause errors with explorer.exe that might repeat multiple times in a loop. The known affected third-party UI customization apps are ExplorerPatcher and StartAllBack. These types of apps often use unsupported methods to achieve their customization and as a result can have unintended results on your Windows device.ExplorerPatcher and StartAllBack have released a version that lists this issue as resolved.

Note If you are using any third-party UI customization app and encounter this or any other issues, you will need to contact customer support for the developer of the app you are using.
IT adminsAfter installing updates released January 10, 2023, and later, kiosk device profiles that have auto log on enabled might not sign in automatically. After Autopilot completes provisioning, affected devices will stay on the sign-in screen prompting for credentials.This issue is addressed in KB5023778.
All usersAfter installing this update, some apps might have intermittent issues with speech recognition, expressive input, and handwriting when using Chinese or Japanese languages. Affected apps might sometimes fail to recognize certain words or might be unable to receive any input from speech recognition or affected input types. This issue is more likely to occur when apps are using offline speech recognition.

Note for app developers This issue only affects speech recognition using Speech Recognition Grammar Specification (SRGS) in Windows.Media.SpeechRecognition. Other implementations of speech recognition are not affected.
To mitigate this issue, you will need to do the following once every time you restart your device:
  1. Close the app which is having issues with speech recognition or other affected input types.
  2. Open Task Manager by selecting the Start button and type "task manager" and select it.
  3. Select the "Processes" tab on the left and then select the "Name" column so that the list of processes is sorted by their names.
  4. Find ctfrmon.exe and select it.
  5. Select the "End Task" button.
  6. Confirm a new instance of ctfmon.exe is started automatically.
  7. You should now be able to open the affected app and use speech recognition and other input types.
We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

Thanks I don't have a restore point unfortunately and the recovery reboot to uninstall the quality update did not remove it. It says something about using dism to uninstall the package name but I couldn't find this KB in the list. I guess its only two options, progress (go to a beta) or regress (reset the entire windows which I prefer not to do if it can be confirmed this update broke something)
It's not the cumulative update that broke it, it's the Antimalware platform update shown in my post. Looks like MS have sent out an update that's not compatible with RP builds - similar thing happened last year. My Beta install on a VM doesn't get this update, but Dev does. The folder can be removed using Recovery media and the update blocked.

The folder can be removed using Recovery media
the folder does not exist or disappear in safe recovery mode!

But I'll be the problem is fixed as you say if I run winfile as system user and rename the folder, it's all fixed.

Also you said it is in RP version but not Beta, I didn't see an RP build yet as of this month, just a beta. What RP are you referring to? Or you mean the release version of Win11?

My Insider Dev version has the same module installed though. But the error doesn't appear here. So there seems to be an interaction between this update and the security update KB5022845 . There is currently nothing you can do here other than wait for an update of KB5007651. We had this problem before in September 2022. A look in the registry showed me that an entry is simply not set.

I noticed this morning my time was out by a number of hours and minutes. Went to timer settings, and a number of options were greyed out.

I had to go into control panel date and time to resync time etc.

Has abybody else experienced this - is it a known bug?
If you switch off the set time automatically it will highlight the set date and time manually option.

Updated last night and Alienware (M15 R5) screen blacked out after a couple minutes. Then the external monitor blacked out a second later. Required a forced shut down and restart to bring the screen back on. Following issues were present upon reboot, several reboots later I gave up and went to bed. The black out issue has happened once or twice before, but lead to no noticeable changes.

Laptop no longer recognizes external monitors, and monitor reports no input signal.
Laptop screen brightness now locked at full eye searing 100%. Function keys do nothing. No sliders available in system settings. Thank your deity of choice for dark mode mods.
No updates to display drivers available.
Ive seen some people having audio controls not working or overlays for screen brightness/audio not even showing up, but I don't have this. Overlays are working properly.
"Go Back" is grayed out. The only thing I can roll back is the security update, which doesn't have anything to do with this?


Edit: finally found the display adaptors for both video cards were disabled. Not sure if this was caused by the update, but turning them both on and rebooting seems to have cured most issues. Screen brightness is still locked, but not at 100% thankfully. Overlay animation works, but the slider doesn't move.

Mine working OK although some options are obviously one or the other -- obviously you can't have both manual set time / date and set automatically.

Note there's no "Summer time" here so no point in the automatically adjust for daylight saving. Maybe the option "set time zone automatically" depends on other regional settings etc elsewhere -- it's the normal Ms Hose up --have settings all over the place so you change one thing and something else changes on a totally different set of screens.

Language seems a bit hosed up too on this release -- at least in the settings !!!!

about this specific known issue for KB5023706:
Copying large multiple gigabyte (GB) files might take longer than expected to finish on Windows 11, version 22H2. You are more likely to experience this issue copying files to Windows 11, version 22H2 from a network share via Server Message Block (SMB) but local file copy might also be affected.Windows devices used by consumers in their home or small offices are not likely to be affected by this issue.

this issue has been removed & no longer mentioned from MS support article 5023706 as of early May 2023
