UPDATE 8/09:

 Windows Blogs:

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.1340 (KB5040557) to the Dev Channel. This update is delivered in a format that offers a preview of enhancements to servicing technology on Windows 11, version 24H2. To learn more, see Introducing Windows 11 checkpoint cumulative updates.

REMINDER: Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel will now receive updates based on Windows 11, version 24H2 via an enablement package (Build 26120.xxxx). For Insiders in the Dev Channel who want to be the first to get features gradually rolled out to you, you can turn ON the toggle (shown in the image below) to get the latest updates as they are available via Settings > Windows Update. Over time, we will increase the rollouts of features to everyone with the toggle turned on. Should you keep this toggle off, new features will gradually be rolled out to your device over time once they are ready.

Turn on the toggle to get the latest updates as they are available to get new features rolled out to you.
Turn on the toggle to get the latest updates as they are available to get new features rolled out to you.

Going forward, we will document changes in Dev Channel builds in two buckets: new features, improvements, and fixes that are being gradually rolled out for Insiders who have turned on the toggle to get the latest updates as they are available and then new features, improvements, and fixes available to everyone in the Dev Channel.

Changes and Improvements gradually being rolled out to the Dev Channel with toggle on*

[Input]

  • We are updating Settings > Bluetooth & Device > Mouse to now include the option to turn off enhanced mouse pointer precision for those that would prefer to not use it and have added a new option for changing mouse scrolling direction.

New toggles for enhanced mouse pointer precision changing mouse scrolling direction highlighted in red boxes.

[Voice Access]

  • We are making improvements for the spelling and corrections experience in voice access. You can now use the experience for the entire voice access session. The spelling experience will now enable you to dictate the characters at a faster speed and offer more editing flexibility inside the experience with dictation commands, namely selection, deletion and text navigation commands.

[Energy Saver]

  • For laptops on battery, a notification will pop up asking you to plug in your laptop if the battery level reaches 20% while Energy Saver is set to “Always On”.

[Settings]

  • We are beginning to roll out a new energy recommendation for turning off HDR to conserve energy on PCs with HDR displays under Settings > Power & battery > Energy recommendations.

New HDR energy recommendation highlighted in a red box in Settings.

Fixes gradually being rolled out to the Dev Channel with toggle on*

[Settings]

  • Fixed an issue where the items under “Let desktop apps access your location” section in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location might visibly flicker although there were no changes displayed.

Known issues

[General]

  • [IMPORTANT] Windows Insiders joining the Dev Channel on PCs running Windows 11, version 24H2 Build 26100.xxxx will see “(repair version)” noted next to the latest Dev Channel build from Windows Update. This is nothing to worry about as all it means is that an in-place upgrade will happen to update your PC to the latest build in the Dev Channel.
  • Adding additional languages or optional features may fail with error 0x800f081f.

Windows Sandbox]

  • Windows Sandbox will fail to launch with error 0x80370106.

[Task Manager]

  • Navigating between different pages in Task Manager may crash Task Manager.
  • We’re working on the fix for an issue causing graphs on the Performance page in Task Manager to not show the correct colors when using dark mode again.

[Input]

  • We’re working on the fix for an issue causing text suggestions for the hardware keyboard to not work properly (selecting one unexpectedly concatenates).

Reminders for Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel

  • Updates released to the Dev Channel are based off Windows 11, version 24H2.
  • Features and experiences included in these builds may never get released as we try out different concepts and get feedback. Features may change over time, be removed, or replaced and never get released beyond Windows Insiders. Some of these features and experiences could show up in future Windows releases when they’re ready.
  • Many features in the Dev Channel are rolled out using Control Feature Rollout technology, starting with a subset of Insiders and ramping up over time as we monitor feedback to see how they land before pushing them out to everyone in this channel.
  • Some features in active development we preview with Windows Insiders may not be fully localized and localization will happen over time as features are finalized. As you see issues with localization in your language, please report those issues to us via Feedback Hub.
  • Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel who want to be the first to get features gradually rolled out to you*, you can turn ON the toggle to get the latest updates as they are available via Settings > Windows Update. Over time, we will increase the rollouts of features to everyone with the toggle turned on. Should you keep this toggle off, new features will gradually be rolled out to your device over time once they are ready.
  • Because the Dev and Beta Channels represent parallel development paths from our engineers, there may be cases where features and experiences show up in the Beta Channel first.
  • Check out Flight Hub for a complete look at what build is in which Insider channel.
  • Copilot in Windows** is being rolled out gradually to Windows Insiders across our global markets. Customers in the European Economic Area will be able to download the Copilot in Windows experience as an app from the Microsoft Store.

Thanks,
Amanda & Brandon

I tried the Restore Health options for the component store and like others found it reports as repairable, and then all OK. The Restore Health option downloaded tons and tons of files (around 5 to 6 Gb worth via Windows Update) and spent around 20 minutes installing them but the same issues remain.

Also reported was an error that the source files could not be found.

Ironically a pop up notification said 'Microsoft would like your perspective' but when I click it I was taken the Feedback Hub where the message 'The survey could not be found' greeted me.

I really don't know what to make of it all. Is the build (and the previous one) really broken in some way (because operationally it all seems fine) or is it just errors reported in things that are not really broken?

In case it matters to anyone, making an Enterprise ISO is live today, when it wasn't yesterday (for me at least), so that's in progress now as it appears to be the only way past Install error - 0x80073713.

I did try the WU recovery option I mentioned earlier, and that sure would have been slick, since it does about a 3.5GB repair download of the build you're trying to get to (not the one that you're on) and then asks you to reboot. Unfortunately, that resulted in a WU error of Install error - 0xc1900101.

I got that popup notification several times in different machines, and always ended up with the same message:

OK, I have question please everybody. Having played and messed around with this build (and the previous build because of these various issues) I've restored back with Macrium to just before all this latest trouble and reapplied the update. I'll take a new image at this point.

I would like to try and 'repair' this if possible but what is the best way?

Should I use one of the the options in Settings:

Screenshot 2024-08-06 195452.png

or should I make an ISO or bootable USB from UUP dump and use that in some way... reinstall? or use DISM and point to the ISO.

I want to keep EVERYTHING as it is now really if possible and see if a repair works. Which would be best option?

And I've backups if it all goes pear shaped.

I'll look in again tomorrow :-)

Yes, that is because they don't set either of these 2 parameters in the ConvertConfig.ini anymore.
If you change those to 1, the size will be much smaller.

1722987845074.png

I tried that last week with the previous Build 26120.1330, you can see below how much it reduced the sizes. 😉

so i decided to do an inplace upgrade with the iso.
I truly can't catch a break with this build. Made the ISO, mounted it, but am told that it can't proceed because of the Secure PC requirement. Is there a current workaround for that for upgrades? I normally use the "Skip_TPM_Check_on_Dynamic_Update" script, which used to work, but that's apparently only now for Windows Update (though Setup didn't complain about TPM, so maybe it still has some effect). I also tried the appraiserres.dll trick.

Take a look at the links below, not sure if these still work when using the ISO?
They used to bypass all the checks for the requirements.

setup.exe /product server
or
setupprep.exe /product server

@fg2001gf11F That was definitely worth a try despite the article not mentioning Secure PC, which is my problem in this case (not TPM).

And it got past that check to be sure -- but has a slightly detracting quality:

@fg2001gf11F Yes, I always deselect that because I don't like waiting for it.

It makes some sense that MS would force not keeping anything when changing editions (not that this would have really installed Server, but Setup thinks that it is, I guess), so it's surprising that it ever let you.

That is not the logic, the /product server parameter was only bypassing the checks for hardware requirements, it was still installing the client that is on the ISO.
I just tried it here and it worked for me with these options.

It does have "Windows Server" in the title bar, and while I knew that Server couldn't be installed I didn't know what else was different.

It's really interesting that it works for you. But there's some variable between us.

Maybe it's the edition? I'm Enterprise, you're likely not.

Maybe you tried it from the same build as the ISO? I'm on an older build than the ISO. Not sure why that would matter, but it could.

I assume it was with the current ISO though, because if it was for 23H2 or something, things could have changed.

Yes, in my case that I just tried, the ISO and the system have the exact same Build 26120.1340 Pro.

Many other users have used this same method to bypass the requirements. Looks like it is still working.

Anyway, you should get a machine that meets the requirements for windows 11. MS is tightening the checks. 🤷‍♂️
Good luck!

The "Reset your PC" does not preserve your Apps and installed programs, not a good choice in my opinion. 😝

I found something about that too earlier. For reasons unknown, it didn't work (Install error - 0xc1900101) but more interesting is how it leaves your system afterwards, and that's a bit of a mystery.

So, before using it, WIU had this: Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Insider Preview (10.0.26120.1340)
After: Windows 11 Insider Preview 10.0.26120.1340 (ge_release_svc_betaflt_upr)

Now, that second thing is appropriate for the recovery, as it's something closer to an image, but I don't know why after the recovery attempt is made it leaves WU primed for that same thing. No doubt there's some tweak to the Registry that would get things back to looking for the CU, but it's anyone's guess what that is.

I assume when the next build comes out that will take precedence in WU and be what appears, but it would be just my luck if it didn't.

Well that went better than I might ever have imagined tbh. It took a while, around 40 minutes I guess but the result seems good. Everything as it was apart from custom font and icon sizes, however as well as notes of the settings used I also had a reg file I made of the Windows Metrics from back when I started on the Dev build. A couple of seconds to apply that and all seems good.

This is what got installed using the recovery option:

Screenshot 2024-08-07 100929.png

And lots to clean up afterwards:

Screenshot 2024-08-07 113511.png

I'm not sure if this is a new partition of some sort or whether it has just been altered and is near its space limit. There was certainly no red anywhere before but I can't say for sure if it is a new 'partition' of some sort. Anyone know the answer to that?

Screenshot 2024-08-07 133407.png

And the view in Disk Management. Is it new (the 754MB partition)? I haven't an old screen shot to compare.
