All usersFollowing the installation of the October 2024 security update, some customers report that the OpenSSH (Open Secure Shell) service fails to start, preventing SSH connections. The service fails with no detailed logging, and manual intervention is required to run the sshd.exe process.

This issue is affecting both enterprise, IOT, and education customers, with a limited number of devices impacted. Microsoft is investigating whether consumer customers using Home or Pro editions of Windows are affected. 		Customers can temporarily resolve the issue by updating permissions (ACLs) on the affected directories. Follow these steps:
  1. Open PowerShell as an Administrator.
  2. Update the permissions for C:\ProgramData\ssh and C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs to allow full control for SYSTEM and the Administrators group, while allowing read access for Authenticated Users. You can restrict read access to specific users or groups by modifying the permissions string if needed.

    Use the following commands to update the permissions:
    $directoryPath = "C:\ProgramData\ssh" $acl = Get-Acl -Path $directoryPath $sddlString = "O:BAD:PAI(A;OICI;FA;;;SY)(A;OICI;FA;;;BA)(A;OICI;0x1200a9;;;AU)" $securityDescriptor = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.RawSecurityDescriptor $sddlString $acl.SetSecurityDescriptorSddlForm($securityDescriptor.GetSddlForm("All")) Set-Acl -Path $directoryPath -AclObject $acl

Microsoft is actively investigating the issue and will provide a resolution in an upcoming Windows update. Further communications will be provided when a resolution or additional workarounds are available.

Method 1: Install all MSU files together
Download all MSU files for KB5044384 from Microsoft Update Catalog and place them in the same folder (for example, C:/Packages). If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

I use Bitdefender AV/Firewall. I have set to "block everything", except what I expressly allow.
I even have to expressly allow MCT, if I use that to build an ISO.
I've been using it since Windows 7.

But if I don't allow those things... the ISOs will "never" get built. :-)


I don't know anything about Microsoft Defender. :/

I would assume you just have to "whitelist" those two files?
But... others don't seem to need to do that. 🤷‍♂️


But I could imagine that Microsoft Defender checks "everything" as it's downloaded ??

I cannot find any place in Defender Firewall to add and/or allow those 2 specific items that you showed. 🤷‍♂️

I'm building the ISO on an HDD, maybe I will try on the SSD and see if it goes faster.

I'm just guessing here... I can't "see" the Microsoft Defender firewall or AV with Bitdefender installed...
I would look for a white list, and then "browse" to those two files. Then maybe there's an ADD button??

Like I said.. I've been running Bitdefender since before MS even thought of Microsoft Defender.
So I've never really "seen" Microsoft Defender.

This is all I see in Settings > Privacy & Security > Windows Security...

It created the ISO for 26100.1742

The only one I select is the... "Run component cleanup".
But even the few times I did select to include updates... it didn't take very long.

I like to make a backup before I do an In-Place upgrade and immediately after.
That way... if any of the updates are seriously messed up, I can just restore to before I installed them.

Like I said.. I've been running Bitdefender since before MS even thought of Microsoft Defender.

I made the MCT 24H2 26100.1742 as soon as it was available, had no problems at all with that. 🤷‍♂️

As for slow internet, it is not a factor, the download phase from uupdump is pretty reasonable even with the slow internet, it is just the build (convert) phase that takes way too long. 😝

On UUPDump, it downloads... the whole time it's building.

The MCT, is really just downloading the ISO. It's not really "building" the ISO.


I can see (with AIDA64), when it's downloading and when it isn't... the bottom two items.

You're right.
I watched AIDA64 the whole time, this time.

It only downloaded for 3.5 minutes at the beginning of the 15 total minutes. ^^

When it gets to the "adding Apps" section, I thought it was still downloading.

I'm trying on a different desktop; I can see the ethernet and the disk activity with Task Manager.
This time I'm using an SSD NVME.
There is very little Ethernet activity after the initial download, mostly working on the SSD, but it is still looks way too slow. 😝🤷‍♂️

Have you ever found any problems selecting "Run component cleanup"?
I don't mean processing the ISO as I know it makes the ISO smaller. I mean using the ISO to install Windows. I've seen reports of people having trouble with Windows Updates.

Outlook has blurry text for tasks in left hand column for mail and mail accounts column. Cannot correct with display settings scaling or resolution selections on a 4k display. Latest graphics and display drivers installed. Minor annoyance at this time. Does not occur on any other 365 apps.

Exactly what I suspected, if I remove the Sleep option, the Flyout opens down like in the second picture. 🤣🤣
Looks just another little mistake similar to the File explorer 3 dots menu that flies open in the wrong direction.
Same behavior discrepancy on Canary Build 27729.1000. And still the same change with Build 26120.2213. 😂
This is not happening with 23H2, any reason for this change? 🤷‍♂️
