  • This update addresses security issues for your Windows operating system.

Improvements​

This security update includes improvements that were a part of update KB5046740 (released November 21, 2024). Below is a summary of the key issues that this update addresses when you install this KB. If there are new features, it lists them as well. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change we are documenting.
  • This update makes miscellaneous security improvements to internal OS functionality. No additional issues were documented for this release.

Windows 11 servicing stack update (KB5049685)- 26100.2592​

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

All usersFollowing the installation of the October 2024 security update, some customers report that the OpenSSH (Open Secure Shell) service fails to start, preventing SSH connections. The service fails with no detailed logging, and manual intervention is required to run the sshd.exe process.

This issue is affecting both enterprise, IOT, and education customers, with a limited number of devices impacted. Microsoft is investigating whether consumer customers using Home or Pro editions of Windows are affected. 		Customers can temporarily resolve the issue by updating permissions (ACLs) on the affected directories. Follow these steps:
  1. Open PowerShell as an Administrator.
  2. Update the permissions for C:\ProgramData\ssh and C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs to allow full control for SYSTEM and the Administrators group, while allowing read access for Authenticated Users. You can restrict read access to specific users or groups by modifying the permissions string if needed.

    Use the following commands to update the permissions:

Microsoft is actively investigating the issue and will provide a resolution in an upcoming Windows update. Further communications will be provided when a resolution or additional workarounds are available.

Install this update

Method 1: Install all MSU files together
Download all MSU files for KB5048667 from Microsoft Update Catalog and place them in the same folder (for example, C:/Packages). Use Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM.exe) to install the target update. DISM will use the folder specified in PackagePath to discover and install one or more prerequisite MSU files as needed.

Updating Windows PC
To apply this update to a running Windows PC, run the following command from an elevated Command Prompt:

DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\packages\Windows11.0-KB

Method 2: Install each MSU file individually, in order

Download and install each MSU file individually either using DISM or Windows Update Standalone Installer in the following order:
  1. windows11.0-kb5043080-x64_953449672073f8fb99badb4cc6d5d7849b9c83e8.msu
  2. windows11.0-kb5048667-x64_d4ad0ca69de9a02bc356757581e0e0d6960c9f93.msu

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

Would be nice to know which one is the partial fix that they rolled out that only works with 100% scale. Clearly that is not a good fix.
I still could not isolate which one that is.

I'm always on 100% scale.
Vivetool is so innocuous, that I don't mind using it.

I don't use very many ID numbers anyway. Just seven, at last count.

Probably because you are missing the partial fix. It is missing on one of my machines too, and that fails with any display settings.
I have 4 more machines that work fine with a display Scale of 100%. That is because those have that partial fix.
Not easy to isolate which feature ID they added for that one. There are too many different ones compared to the one that fail with any settings.
It would take too long trying to isolate which one, but clearly it is not a good fix. 😂🤷‍♂️

Vivetool is not the issue. I just would like to isolate which bad fix they rolled out that only works with 100% scale.
I filed so many FBH reports with traces, and none have a valid reply, getting tired of this B.S.
They only say that they are working on the problem. 😂😂😂🤷‍♂️
They had this bug for way too long.

100% scale doesn't help. It probably means that Microsoft has enabled certain "Feature IDs" on your machine. But not enabled certain "Feature IDs" for me. I don't think the same display configuration requires different fixes.

Windows 11 24H2 has many issues that need to be resolved by Microsoft. My main (PC#1) machine is still stuck on Windows 11 23H2 because there are fewer issues than 24H2.

It works on 4 of my machines if I use a scale of 100%, but fails on the 5th one. 😂
Anyway, the point is that the fix they are trying to enable is a bad fix. 😝🤬

I'm on 24H2 26100.2454 but I was offered this update KB8048667 so I'm not sure if this should even apply.

Cumulative update for 24H2 KB8048667 fails with install error 0x800f0922
Fixes tried Simple reboot
Update troubleshooter – couldn’t do anything - reboot
Enable all .NET 3.5 services - reboot
sfc /scannow and DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - reboot
All failed after being et 35% on the part of install that runs after restart.
2 other computers in the house updatwed fine but they are 261100.2605
If somebody could shed some light I'd be grateful enven if it's Leave it alone.
Sorry if this is in the wrong place.

It does require CFR technology to gradually roll out these fixes.
It's fixed now. It looks like Microsoft has enabled something "Fixed" on my machine.

Just to test... I enabled: 51960011 ...which I had disabled previously.
Then I rebooted.
And the three dot fix is still there. So, MS must have fixed it.

Remember when the en-gb language localisation had the hilarious substitution of 'postcode' for 'zip' in File Explorer? For a while it would say 'Compress to postcode file...'. Well they've done it again in both 23H2 and 24H2, this time substituting 'ticked' for 'checked' :lmao:

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.
