IMPORTANT Because of minimal operations during the Western holidays and the upcoming new year, there won’t be a non-security preview release for the month of December 2024. There will be a monthly security release for December 2024. Normal monthly servicing for both security and non-security preview releases will resume in January 2025.

  • This update addresses security issues for your Windows operating system.

Improvements​

This security update includes improvements that were a part of update KB5046740 (released November 21, 2024). Below is a summary of the key issues that this update addresses when you install this KB. If there are new features, it lists them as well. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change we are documenting.
  • This update makes miscellaneous security improvements to internal OS functionality. No additional issues were documented for this release.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

Windows 11 servicing stack update (KB5049685)- 26100.2592​

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

All usersFollowing the installation of the October 2024 security update, some customers report that the OpenSSH (Open Secure Shell) service fails to start, preventing SSH connections. The service fails with no detailed logging, and manual intervention is required to run the sshd.exe process.

This issue is affecting both enterprise, IOT, and education customers, with a limited number of devices impacted. Microsoft is investigating whether consumer customers using Home or Pro editions of Windows are affected. 		Customers can temporarily resolve the issue by updating permissions (ACLs) on the affected directories. Follow these steps:
  1. Open PowerShell as an Administrator.
  2. Update the permissions for C:\ProgramData\ssh and C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs to allow full control for SYSTEM and the Administrators group, while allowing read access for Authenticated Users. You can restrict read access to specific users or groups by modifying the permissions string if needed.

    Use the following commands to update the permissions:

    $directoryPath = "C:\ProgramData\ssh" $acl = Get-Acl -Path $directoryPath $sddlString = "O:BAD:PAI(A;OICI;FA;;;SY)(A;OICI;FA;;;BA)(A;OICI;0x1200a9;;;AU)" $securityDescriptor = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.RawSecurityDescriptor $sddlString $acl.SetSecurityDescriptorSddlForm($securityDescriptor.GetSddlForm("All")) Set-Acl -Path $directoryPath -AclObject $acl
  3. Repeat the above steps for C:\ProgramData\ssh\logs.

Microsoft is actively investigating the issue and will provide a resolution in an upcoming Windows update. Further communications will be provided when a resolution or additional workarounds are available.

Install this update

Method 1: Install all MSU files together
Download all MSU files for KB5048667 from Microsoft Update Catalog and place them in the same folder (for example, C:/Packages). Use Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM.exe) to install the target update. DISM will use the folder specified in PackagePath to discover and install one or more prerequisite MSU files as needed.

Updating Windows PC
To apply this update to a running Windows PC, run the following command from an elevated Command Prompt:

DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\packages\Windows11.0-KB

Or, run the following command from an elevated Windows PowerShell prompt:

Method 2: Install each MSU file individually, in order

Download and install each MSU file individually either using DISM or Windows Update Standalone Installer in the following order:
  1. windows11.0-kb5043080-x64_953449672073f8fb99badb4cc6d5d7849b9c83e8.msu
  2. windows11.0-kb5048667-x64_d4ad0ca69de9a02bc356757581e0e0d6960c9f93.msu

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

I'm not an insider tester and never will be. As stated, I use my computer for my photography avocation and to make my living. For what I do, I'm simply not having any problems with bugs whatsoever.

I certainly can understand that some do have problems with bugs, depending on their hardware, software, and what they do with their computers. You're apparently one of them and I can appreciate that. All I've done is state that, for what I do, I'm not in that group, and I'm not currently having any problems. :-)

I think people on these forums are trying to get the problems fixed.
Among millions of users, I'm sure there are many that don't have or don't see any of the problems.
Knowing that doesn't really help fixing the existing bugs. 😉

I like @TraderGary do not see any issues with this latest update that stops me using my PC for day to day activities. Yeah yeah, there are some things that do NOT work as we expect, however it is NOT a war stopper. I am sure Microsoft are aware of the explorer inconvenience but I have NOT heard that it breaks a PC.
Continually flooding every new thread regarding a KB update that the "explorer" issue still exists - Note it once and move on.
Members generally interested to see if the latest update will break their system, do NOT need to read the same old story repetitively through out a single thread.

I don't have any issues with these comments. And yes, I have 24H2 on both my computers with no issues.

I do have issues with some tech media sites like Windows Latest who seem to like bashing the silly line about how full of bugs 24H2 is. There are numerous other websites doing this. Also, the people on the internet, and yes of read this stuff here who go on how bad 24H2 is and using over-emotive words. It doesn't suck, nor is it a fiasco. It is a major update to Windows 11, the biggest since it was first released in 2021.

The driver frameworks/architecture/models and much more have had a big update which I think probably explains why some are having problems. I do think that it is essential to anyone planning to upgrade to 24H2 to make sure they have a full system image backup of their current install of Windows first.

I didn't ignore anything. To my clear question about 26100.2605 about insider trading, a clear answer was given: It sure is. And to guess what you meant, I'm not a psychic. You also clarified this later about the Release Preview.

I have "3 Dot Problem" on both my 7 year old AMD desktop and my shiny new Co-pilot+ laptop - both with this latest cumulative update. The laptop uses 200 scaling; the desktop 150. Apart from the dreaded "3 Dot Problem" everything works as expected.

I blame a mystery alien culture planning to invade Earth... I'm certain Brink knows something, but isn't saying.

Only MS developers can really fix these issues or bugs. Because we don't have the Windows source code.

Here is the outcome from 10.0.26100.2605 december build (tested on several different UPDATED machines where the new build was successfully deployed):

1. 3dot explorer menu bug is still present (always opens upwards despite explorer window size - full screen or not); display scale 100%, all resolutions up to 3440x1440 (incl) tested even with scales up to 200%.
2. 190 MB of windows update cleanup is still NON-removable by Disk Cleanup (run as admin incl. tested).
At least this latest bug 'steals' much less than the previous bug with 8-9 GB...

Hi Guys,

i installed KB5048667 for my 24H2 Build today and register an new Bug in Town ;):

When you open the Sound Tab in Settings there is too much Space between the two Headlines. This was not the Case before the Update. It´s a Minor Thing but my inner Monk hates this ;)

Anyone else?

Hey guys, as a follow up to my comprehensive list of issues here + Win7ine's addon post above, I can hereby confirm the following (tested and verified):

Dism /online /cleanup-image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase seems to fix and reclaim back the non-removable windows update cleanup storage (190 MB bug in this build). Unfortunately, as noted above, it fails to fix both /StartComponentCleanup and /analyzecomponentstore.
By the way the first time you run /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase it should go all the way up to 100% and you will think for a split second that all is finally good, but... yeah :sneaky: run it again and you will be back to our favorite:

Dism /online /cleanup-image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase

Reporting an Issue/Bug usually takes some time to investigate. In fact, MS is starting to fix "3dot explorer menu bug", it may not be suitable for all users. These "Confirmed Issues/Bugs" have a priority order, and maybe a certain "Bug" does not need to be fixed in priority.
