Solved KB5066835 - Broke "Advanced Startup"

it worked for me with the latest version from MS, i replaced both winre.wim and reagent.xml with the ones from the official 25H2 iso - reenabled WinRe and mouse/keyboard is working again in Advanced Start Menu

Both of my desktops updated without issue, updated but when this Lenovo Lappy updated to 25H2 and the Taskbar was nowhere to be found!

I had to restart Windows Explorer and voila! there it was!

However, Outlook seems to want to update and It keeps telling me that Outlook is not responding.

Call me over optimistic...but I wouldn't get in to big of a hurry to worry about replacing winre, or 6899 being the new release ISO.
Once Microsoft figures out that they hopelessly broke their own Advanced Startup and Recovery Options they will issue a fix fast.

And the 6899 iso will be replaced with next weeks flavor of the week. Think I will just wait for that to be released.

MS updated all the download setups to the Oct CU. So restoring the WinRE wont work with official sources. So that leaves uup dump, a friend's PC with WinRE that is not updated, a backup or wait it out.

That's why I was looking for one. I'll wait for MSC to get their act together. If I need to do a recovery, it's easy enough to work around.

I repaired it with the WinRe.wim and ReAgent.xml from the latest 25h2 iso

WinRe.wim (danish edition, SHA256 will differ in other editions)

That's what I did too. But then I screwed up by installing the policy file SKUSiPolicy.P7b that is staged in c:\windows\system32\securebootupdates. After installing the updated policy, the old version of WinRE would no longer load. For now, I am using a Windows installation flash drive to access the recovery tools. A word of warning: Updates to SKUSiPolicy.P7b cannot be undone!

KB5066835 broke our logins. We use OES client logins and if after booting you wait more than a minute the kbd and mouse no longer work. If you login in less than 60 seconds things are up, life on the devices are fine and dandy. The patch KB5070773 does not fix this issue. Same issue.

Hi all,

I’m running Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.7070 (Dev & Beta channels) and noticed an issue: whenever I use Shift + Restart → Advanced options, the PC freezes at that screen — keyboard/mouse stop responding, and I can’t proceed.

I haven’t seen this listed officially as a known issue for this build.

• Has anyone else on Dev or Beta channel experienced this?
• If yes, what build number?
