Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26300.7674 (KB5074170) to the Dev Channel.

Starting today, the Dev Channel is jumping ahead to receive 26300 series builds. This means that the window to switch from the Dev Channel to the Beta Channel is closed once Build 26300.7674 is installed. If you are in the Dev Channel today and still want to switch to the Beta Channel at the last minute, when Build 26300.7674 is offered you can pause updates in Windows Update and switch your channel to the Beta Channel and un-pause updates.

These 26300 series builds will contain many of the same features and improvements as the 26220 series builds that will continue to be released in the Beta Channel. Over time, we will be making behind-the-scenes platform changes in each build so they may have different known issues because of those changes.

In the case of Build 26300.7674 today – this build contains the same features and improvements as Build 26220.7653 released previously.

As always, if you experience any issues while you use your PC on the builds we release to the Dev Channel, please file feedback in Feedback Hub.

Changes in Dev Channel builds and updates are documented in two buckets: new features, improvements, and fixes that are being gradually rolled out for Insiders who have turned on the toggle to get the latest updates as they are available (via Settings > Windows Update*) and then new features, improvements, and fixes rolling out to everyone in the Dev Channel. Fixes gradually being rolled out with toggle on*​

[File Explorer]​

  • Fixed an issue where the “Extract All” option would not appear in the command bar while browsing non-ZIP archive folders.

[Start menu]​

  • Fixed an issue for some Insiders where clicking the “hide this pane” button in the mobile device side panel might not lead to the setting to hide it.

[Search]​

  • Fixed an issue where the Search process was showing an icon with an X instead of a magnifying glass.

[Settings]​

  • We’ve made some underlying changes to help address cases where the Settings Home page might be very slow to load.

[Display & Graphics]​

  • Fixed an issue causing secondary monitors to not display correctly and show black screens after the latest updates for a small number of Insiders.

[Other]​

  • Fixed an underlying issue in the previous flight which could cause unexpected sign-in failures when using Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365.
  • Fixed an issue causing some Insiders to see a bug check with error SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION after the last few flights.

Known issues​

[Start menu]​

  • [NEW] We’re working on the fix for an issue where when using the Start menu in Categories view, clicking the entry to show more apps in the category might not work.

[File Explorer]​

  • [NEW] We’re working on the fix for an underlying issue causing all open File Explorer windows and tabs to unexpectedly jump to Desktop or Home sometimes.

[Xbox full screen experience for PC]​

  • Some apps may behave unexpectedly when using FSE, particularly those that expect to be locked to a given size or launch additional windows.

[Taskbar & System Tray]​

  • We’re working on the fix for an issue where for some Insiders apps aren’t showing in the system tray when they should be.

[Click to Do]​

  • We’re working on the fix for an issue where the Microsoft 365 Copilot prompt box on selected images does not function if the Microsoft 365 Copilot app is not running.

Reminders for Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel​

  • Updates are based on Windows 11, version 25H2 via an enablement package (Build 26300.7674).
  • Many features are rolled out using Controlled Feature Rollout technology, starting with a subset of Insiders and ramping up over time as we monitor feedback to see how they land before pushing them out to everyone in this channel.
  • The desktop watermark shown at the lower right corner of the desktop is normal for Windows Insider pre-release builds.
  • For Windows Insiders who want to be the first to get features gradually rolled out to you, you can turn ON the toggle to get the latest updates as they are available via Settings > Windows Update*. Over time, we will increase the rollouts of features to everyone with the toggle turned on. Should you keep this toggle off, new features will gradually be rolled out to your PC over time once they are ready.
  • Features and experiences included in these builds may never get released as we try out different concepts and get feedback. Features may change over time, be removed, or replaced and never get released beyond Windows Insiders. Some of these features and experiences could show up in future Windows releases when they’re ready.
  • Some features in active development we preview with Windows Insiders may not be fully localized and localization will happen over time as features are finalized. As you see issues with localization in your language, please report those issues to us via Feedback Hub.

I have three machined on Dev, two unsupported devices and one fully supported.

The two unsupported devices are busy downloading and installing this feature update. The fully supported one fails with download error - 0x80096004.

Error code 0x80096004 stands for:

TRUST_E_CERT_SIGNATURE
The signature of the certificate could not be confirmed.

In other words, a broken or invalid certificate is included in the update package, so the client has to discard this download.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
Whatever I try, I cannot get the supported device with its 2023 certificates to accept this feature update 😡

Meanwhile on the unsupported devices we're back to a proper Dev channel with a watermark and expiry date.....

Finally done, this was the slowest update I've seen in long time. Yest it was a full reinstall because it created the Windows.old folder.

No. I have done nothing to this machine myself, CA2011 has not been revoked. I'm leaving it up to Microsoft to manage its certificates. So far Windows Update has installed the latest Dell BIOS update which contains the CA 2023 certificates.

I have just checked the progress using @garlin's script: garlin's PowerShell scripts for updating Secure Boot CA 2023
They say the CA2011 has yet to be revoked.

This is the machine that just completed the update on my post #6 above.
It was a pretty slow update from 26220.7653 to 26300.7674 but completed without issues. 🤞

There are several hits on the web for error-code-0x80096004, perhaps it has nothing to do with the Secure Boot certificate. 🤷‍♂️

They always screw up handling Dark and Light, especially when Windows mode and app mode are Custom and not set the same way.
Either Widows Dark, app Light or Windows Light, app Dark. 😂🤷‍♂️

Are you saying that WU installed a Dell BIOS update, as in the very one you would get if going to your model's page on Dell and installing the BIOS update? If so, that's extraordinary and is not something that I've ever seen in WU, though I deal mostly with Lenovo these days. I've certainly seen some WUs that have the word "firmware" in their name, such as "Lenovo Ltd. - Firmware - 1.0.0.43," but it never corresponds to the main firmware as I always end up doing those manually and they have completely different versioning.

What a painful full build update. The slowest I have seen in several months. 😝🤷‍♂️

Updated 2 more machines in Dev insider. Quite slow downloading and updating.
Finally completed without errors.
Still had to use Disk Cleanup to get rid of previous installation of over 25 GB (Windows.old folder).
It was not showing up in "System > Storage > Temporary files". Same issue on the 1st machine. 😵‍💫🤷‍♂️

It's completely normal for Dell. Windows Update offers the BIOS as an optional update.

Method 2: Updating through Windows Update​

Dell systems also receive BIOS/UEFI updates via Windows Update. These updates appear under optional driver updates as Dell Firmware.

  1. Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update, and click Check for updates.
  2. Now go to Advanced Options > Optional Updates. Under Driver updates, select the BIOS update (if available) and click Download & install.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    In-place upgrade to 22H2 using ISO and a workaround.
    Feature Update to 23H2 by manually installing the Enablement Package.
    In-place upgrade to 24H2 using hybrid 23H2/24H2 install media.
    Upgraded to 25H2 by Enablement Package.

    Also running Insider Dev, and Canary builds and Windows 10 as native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
