Windows Secure Boot certificate expiration

Important: Secure Boot certificates used by most Windows devices are set to expire starting in June 2026. This might affect the ability of certain personal and business devices to boot securely if not updated in time. To avoid disruption, we recommend reviewing the guidance and taking action to update certificates in advance. For details and preparation steps, see Windows Secure Boot certificate expiration and CA updates.

Highlights

This update is available through two release phases: gradual rollout and normal rollout. A gradual rollout delivers an update in phases, so features reach devices over time instead of all at once, meaning availability varies by device. A normal rollout is the broad release to all eligible devices at the same time, usually when it reaches general availability (GA).

Gradual rollout
The following summary outlines features from AI-powered Windows 11 PC experiences, along with improvements and fixes. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change.

Windows 11 PC experiences

This section highlights some new features and enhancements for Windows 11 PCs, including AI-powered capabilities, continuous innovation, and performance improvements.
  • [Narrator] New! 1 Narrator provides rich image descriptions on Copilot+ PCs and now works with Copilot on all Windows 11 devices. Press Narrator key + Ctrl + D to describe the focused image or Narrator key + Ctrl + S to describe the full screen. Copilot opens with the image ready, allowing you to enter a prompt for a customized description. The image is shared only after you choose to describe it. On Copilot+ PCs, Narrator gives instant, on‑device descriptions, and you can select Ask Copilot for more detail.

  • [Smart App Control] New! You can turn Smart App Control (SAC) on or off without needing a clean install. To make changes, go to Settings > Windows Security > App & Browser Control > Smart App Control settings. When turned on, SAC helps block untrusted or potentially harmful apps. To learn more, see App & Browser Control in the Windows Security App. This feature was previously disclosed in January 2026 (KB5074105) and is now beginning to roll out.

  • [Account Settings]
    • New! Microsoft 365 Family subscribers can upgrade to a different Microsoft 365 plan from Settings > Accounts. To remove the upgrade option, turn off Suggested content in Settings.

    • New! This update improves the design of the dialog boxes in Settings > Accounts > Other users to match the modern Windows look and support dark mode. The visibility of the dialog box option depends on whether the device has a domain joined work or school account.
  • [Input] New! The Pen settings page includes refinements to the pen tail button options. The new “Same as Copilot key” option enables the pen tail button to open the same app as the Copilot key.

  • [Settings]
    • New! The Settings About page (Settings > About) has been improved to provide a more structured and intuitive experience, offering clearer device specifications and easier navigation to related device components, including quick access to Storage settings.
    • New! 2 The device information card on the Settings Home page simplifies key device specifications and improves consistency across the end-to-end flow from the Home Card to the Settings > System > About page, making information easier to scan and understand.

    • This update improves the reliability and performance of opening the Home in Settings.
    • This update improves the reliability of downloading required updates when you’re prompted in Settings > System > Advanced.
  • [File Explorer] This update improves the File Explorer experience.
    • You can more reliability unblock files downloaded from the internet in order to preview them in File Explorer.

    • You can use Voice Typing (Windows logo key + H) when renaming a file in File Explorer.

    • You can now sort the permissions entries in the Advanced Security Settings window for a folder in File Explorer by Principal.
  • [Display] This update includes Display reliability improvements.
    • Monitors can now report refresh rates higher than 1000 Hz.
    • When you use a native USB4 monitor connection, the USB controller can now enter its lowest power level while the PC is sleeping, which helps save battery life.
    • Auto rotation reliability has improved after resuming from sleep.
    • HDR reliability has improved for displays with non-compliant DisplayID 2.0 blocks.
    • Monitors with DisplayID now report a more accurate size when the WMI monitor APIs are used.
  • [Printing] Updated downlevel baseline support for printer connections to be Windows 10, version 1607 and Windows Server 2016 (Build 14393).
  • [Safe mode] This update improves the reliability of loading taskbar components in safe mode.
  • [Voice Access] This update improves how numbers are detected and written when using Voice Access in English.
  • [Start menu] This update improves the reliability of applying the Start menu layout through Group Policy when desktopAppLink is present in the JSON.
  • [Remote Desktop] The Set-RDSessionCollectionConfiguration PowerShell command now recognizes DisableSeamlessLanguageBar.

"It’s unclear what went wrong, as Microsoft won’t share the details, but the bug was discovered at the last minute, and if you were affected, you’d see error 0x80073712 on the Windows Update page. This error means assembly files, which are required by the update, are missing in the WinSxS folder."

That seems to say that the update is not fine and has a problem with some computers.

I'm just glad it went smoothly for my two machines despite three reboots. I hate that some Windows Updates are a crap shoot anymore.

I'm just glad it went smoothly for my two machines despite three reboots. I hate that some Windows Updates are a crap shoot anymore.
When I installed it from Windows Update, it restarted 4 times and the last restart went to a Dell Alienware Bios Test screen. After I tested everything it then loaded, the next morning it would not boot past the error screen and I had to go back using MR and then went back to 8039 and then l installed it using The manual method and that restarted normal but then thing were not loading at Startup ...Defender and so on. I went back to 26200.8039 and will stay there till MS fixes the problem. @f14tomcat that was a sniping tool image and the rest of the text was from the MS support page.😊🤷‍♂️

Well I was having issues such as Defender not starting with Windows so I went back to 26200.8039-It at least loads everything and I got nothing different from 8116.
No problems here with Defender on .8116

<insert sarcasm tone>
Microsoft has been trying to do this "Microsoft wants to make Windows updates less frustrating in 2026" ever since Windows XP days. Yet, they still haven't achieved it.

It's the same build. .8116 isn't a RP buid
Installed on all my machines R.P. and public builds some with W.U. and the last machines that did not get it with W.U. I used the .msu from the catalog.
I have not seen any problem on any machine yet. 🤷‍♂️

I tried it again with the same results , SFC runs clean but I still get a 4th boot to the alienware support assist test page where I have to run some tests and it passes all of the tests but if I skip this I get the error that I posted some hours ago. I am no back to 26200.8039 and I will stay there till MS releases an updated WU to 26200.8116. My PC is OK for the CA 2026 thing and I have no errors.

I will wait until it appears in Windows Update... in the meantime, I'm thinking once it rolls out to everyone it will have a different build number from this one... :smirk:

With February update, Windows 11 start to have random freezes due to some changes in Windows GPU handling in both AMD and NVIDIA GPUs. What they changed exactly, I could not find, but I assume it is related to GPU memory handling or RAM. Behavior is unpredictable. If you use browser, does not matter which one, using Hardware Acceleration and open site like YouTube which prefer AV01 codec, which is not the same as AVC1 or H264, or VP9, you could have freeze or pixelization of complete screen, which could be solved by restarting Windows Explorer in Task Manager.

That could solve situation, but not every time, where you probable would have a freeze and hard restart.

You can disable Hardware Acceleration in your browser, but then you will have your CPU decoding highly demanding AV01 codec in normal everyday browsing. It is not related to streaming sites only, you will have the same situation if you open page where some adds going on with video play. If that means, we all have to buy the newest GPUs with newest driver, common guys, that is not something we users want. Especially, there are so many GPUs around the World, for which driver support has ended which means there will be no newer driver.

In games, where Hardware Acceleration is needed you will probably or mostly have a lot of freezes.

That is not fixed in this update although they said it was solved by March update but it did not. Freezes remain.

Yes, I know I can use Feedback Hub, which I did, but let me write it down here also, if some of you experienced the same freezes as lot of us do. I hope this unwanted scenario will be solved in next update.

Well I Did an In Place upgrade install of 26200.8039 and then installed 26200.8116 and all seems to be good now. (y)
That worked until I turned on my PC this morning. It seems that the Defender Notification for the systray is not turning on.

Might be a Dell issue , Dell's seem to have more issues with Windows updates than anything else. I did the manual install from the catalogue , rebooted three times and all is fine

I went back to 8039 but the problem was that the systray notification setting was turned of in settings. I am just going to wait for MS to re release it.

I've never had an update issue with any of my Dell's. I do run totally clean systems with absolutely no hacks or OS modifications.

We're seeing many more problems on HP machines and updates than Dell. The Dell machines are much more stable and everything just seems to work better.

I'm using an old, depricated Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti graphics card on my Intel desktop system, an had these random issues as you describerd.
I installed KB5079391 via Windows Update when it was available on Mar 26th for a few hours without any problems. The random screen freezes seem to have been gone since.
Did not know that there are other, similar cases with old graphics cards, thank you for this post

Let me put some more light on this one. I use HWInfo Monitor Gadget, free version, to see CPU, RAM, GPU and UPS behavior in certain situations. My GPU, I have is AMD R9 280 which is in the same range as yours. First thing first, I do not know if you are using browser ability for Hardware Acceleration of GPU, you can easily find it somewhere in settings. If you are using Hardware Acceleration in your browser and you have no issues then you are good to go. My system still has random freezes if I turn on Hardware Acceleration. with this newest Windows Update. Reading other forums it is probably related to bad VRAM or RAM handling with this new Windows Update.

If you are not using Hardware Acceleration, that means your CPU does video decoding for all codecs and no random freezes. You can easily check it by opening some YouTube video, right click on video, Stat For Nerds and look for codecs, which can be AV01, VP9 or AVC1. Then, open Task manager, Performance tab or HWInfo Monitor if you wish, to see how much CPU is used for playing that video as well as you can check out GPU tab in Task Manager/Performance, where Video decoding will be shown. If your CPU usage goes high like 30-40% or higher and your GPU stays on 0% of usage, your computer does CPU software decoding and no Hardware Acceleration at all. The final out come will be hotter CPU, lot of spinning of fans and finally, more power used, which I can see in HWInfo Monitor Gadget in UPS section, where my power usage goes up to 300W just for watching YouTube videos where situation before was around 200W. That is not wanted situation and in such environment this Windows 11 is not energy friendly although in Windows Update tab it says otherwise. Using computer, for instance, 8 hours per day, with pushing it 300W all time, will increase your electricity bill. Nobody wants that.

My point here is that combination of CPU doing other staff and GPU doing its staff, can make computer work smoothly without using that much power and your electricity bill will not be high more than it is expected. But, another huge but, Windows Update breaks this option and I use browsers without Hardware Acceleration, in order to avoid freezing, but using more power all the time. Buying new modern GPU is not an option.

The same situation is with network adapter driver, I use Realtek, 1Gbps of speed and with this Windows 11 implementation, I have more than 50% of CPU usage when I use my local network at my home, copy or moving files from computer to different devices. This one really looks ridiculous. Network driver for Windows 11 does not use NDIS and usage of CPU goes that high in regular network work. Why is that, who knows, bad programing or bad implementation of network driver makes my local network usage very power demanding. The sam I have is with internet, more speed requires more CPU usage. It is also related to drivers of other manufacturers, not to Realtek only.

Finally, I have dual boot system on the same machine, with Windows 10 and Windows 11 and guess what, Windows 10 network driver, with NDIS, uses around 10-15% of CPU usage with around 900Mbps speed in my home local network, but for the same task Windows 11 uses more than 50% of CPU usage, both for upload and download.

Conclusion is easy to get. Windows 11 is not energy friendly at all, trying to be nice for eyes with animations and other stuff, but for need-to-have abilities it looks like Windows 11 is very energy demanding, compared to Windows 10, more than 5 times demanding with regular things and usage, not playing highly demanding video games, just daily business, streaming videos and stuff. Combination of lousy video decoding and network adapter driver, both highly power demanding, with increasing of electricity bill and random freezes makes me wonder what is purpose of that. Maybe, they want to make users to by new equipment every year, like new costly modern GPUs, just to be able to use Windows 11 highly power demanding stuff for regular business.
