Windows 11 servicing stack update (KB5101277)- 28000.2263

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates. To learn more about SSUs, see Simplifying on-premises deployment of servicing stack updates.

Known issues in this update

Symptoms

Microsoft has received reports of an issue in which certain third-party applications might be unable to launch Microsoft Office applications or open documents after installing the Windows updates released on or after June 9, 2026. This issue affects certain third-party applications that use OLE automation to interact with Microsoft Office applications. In some cases, the Office application or document might fail to open without displaying an error message.

Affected Microsoft Office applications might include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and other Microsoft Office applications when launched from within the affected third-party application.

Reports indicate that this issue may affect applications such as CCH Engagement, Workpaper Manager, dental software (such as Dentrix and Softdent), and Zotero; other similar applications might also be impacted.

Third-party information disclaimer

The third-party products listed are manufactured by companies that are independent of Microsoft. We make no warranty, implied or otherwise, about the performance or reliability of these products.

Workaround

A resolution is in progress and will be included in a future Windows update. More information will be shared when it becomes available.

To work around this issue, open the application or document directly instead of launching it from the affected third-party application.

For organizations, a workaround is available for affected devices. To apply this workaround in your organization and mitigate the issue, please contact Microsoft Support for business.

How to get this update

Before you install this update

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates.

Deployment

If you deploy dynamic updates such as this update to an existing Windows image, ensure the boot.stl file is included as part of the installation media. Failure to include the file might prevent devices from successfully starting from the installation media and can result in error code 0xc0430001.

Note: The boot.stl file is used during Secure Boot validation and must match the Windows version and architecture of the image you are updating.

To ensure the boot.stl file is included as part of the installation media, do one of the following:
  • Use the Update WinPE script to update an existing Windows image. (Recommended)
  • Manually copy the boot.stl file from the device Windows\Boot\EFI folder to the corresponding folder on your installation media before deploying the update.
For information about how to apply Dynamic Update packages to existing Windows images, see Update Windows installation media with Dynamic Update.

MS hasn't posted it to Updates History yet... slackers. This should be the final push to unblock a large number of devices trapped in Secure Boot update purgatory (otherwise known as "More Data Needed").

Not many comments on this one. Runs well for unsupported PCs though. I'm not even signed up for Insider Builds and it's downloadin anyway. How is that possible? Could be my togle is on for getting that latest updates?

Decided to do an in-place upgrade to 26H1 on a supported device. It's been a trouble-free experience. Also have had it on an unsupported device for the last six months, same trouble-free experience.

You don't have to be enrolled to receive these updates. It depends exclusively on your system update flags, which any fresh install or in-place upgrade of 26H1 automatically sets. I have it running smoothly and receiving regular updates on an old Toshiba Tecra R940 (Ivy Bridge).

Use this command to check your flags:
Get-ItemProperty -Path "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\Applicability"

I have 26H1 non Insider I got from UUPDump. Only problem I am having is the task manager starts on every single boot up or reboot of Windows 11 Pro. I've also logged into Windows under Admin as well as another user name I created. Problem there every time. Not a deal breaker but it's annoying. Anyone else seeing this? I've tried all the suggestions I have found online but none work. Apparently this was an issue before.

I hope you know 26H1 will not be updated to version 26H2.

That's an important consideration for people to be aware of. Personally, I'm relieved as it's so trouble free that it's become my main go-to OS version.

Personally, I'm relieved as it's so trouble free that it's become my main go-to OS version.

So what machine you running it on?

26H1 is designed explicitly for new ARM-based hardware.

No. It's designed for ARM, but the Windows build pipeline also makes AMD64 images at the same time. People are benefiting from this side behavior, because MS didn't set up its pipeline to only create ARM images.

Even if it's not targeted for AMD64, from a project point of view it's easier to allow the automation process to continue cranking out 26H1 images for both architectures. Rather than risk breaking the build process.

MS knows people are using it on non-ARM, but you're not going to get any help or sympathy for doing so. It's like the early days of 21H2, when MS had ARM images even though officially it wasn't available on ARM. And people complained about waiting for ARM install ISO's.

Well I am sure UUPDump will have 26H2 when it is available. Even if MS won't update 26H1 I can get it from there if I want it. I still can't keep Task Manager from starting with Windows. Only problem I am having.

The issue isn't if UUP dump will have 26H2, they eventually get access to almost every available release.

You still won't be able to install 26H2 over 26H1 on a non-ARM system. The branch numbers are purposely selected by MS to prevent such an in-place upgrade. 26H1 users on x64 will have to wait until 2027 for a substantially new release.

Ok sounds good. I'll wait until 2027. I have found a few more quirks with Windows 11 Pro that bug me. I might just roll back to Windows 10 as everything just worked with that OS. And yes I am aware it is no longer supported by MS.
