Keys Triggering Random Functions Instead of Typing

Hello,

I've noticed a strange issue with my keyboard on Windows 10/11. It keeps happening rarely, where certain keys trigger different programs or functions instead. For example:

• W opens the Widget window.
• S opens the Search.
• D opens the Run command.
• E opens the File Explorer.
• Q activates Search.
• R opens Run.
• M minimizes everything and shows the Desktop.
• N brings up Calendar and Notifications.

These are just some of the keys I’ve tested, but the issue may affect more. The problem happens randomly, and restarting my PC is the only way to stop it.
How do you fix this?

I would open a command prompt as Admin, and run these two commands, one at a time...

sfc /scannow

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

your windows key is stuck down somehow. all of those are win+corresponding letter to open what you're describing

do you have another keyboard to try and to isolate the issue if it is a defective keyboard?

As stated, a key is stuck Try a different keyboard

Thanks for the suggestions. I’m not convinced that this is a hardware issue. My keyboard has a Win Lock feature that should prevent the Windows key from being accidentally pressed, and the key itself doesn’t seem to be physically stuck or jammed.

Interestingly, when this issue occurs, the problem is that keys like W, A, S, and D are triggering functions like opening the home screen instead of just typing. This issue may stop after a while, and restarting the PC temporarily fixes it. Since the problem seems to happen intermittently and affects multiple keys, I’m wondering if this could be related to a software or Windows feature rather than a physical defect with the keyboard.

Has anyone encountered something similar or have any other ideas on what might be causing this?

I had a very similar issue about 5 years ago that started when the keyboard decided to go all goofy and it was an issue with the keyboard itself. It was a Microsoft model.

Is this a Wireless Keyboard? If so, change the battery.
If a wired one, try replacing the keyboard. Or try the keyboard on another computer, It is usually the most obvious and easy thing to try before you go into diagnosing Windows.

Windows does not execute commands by itself. It follows whatever the connected input interface (touchscreen, mic, mouse, keyboard, etc.) tells it to do. I doubt it's a windows issue.
