I don't have one.

Is there a setting to choose whether its USB port is used for charging or data? You may need to choose the latter.

When I searched on the net for Kindle Fire I found, that Kindle/Amazon has produced a lot of devices that are called 'Kindle Fire) since 2011.
See this Wikipedia site:

So please specify what model you are using and how you have connected that decvice to your PC.
Because on many models there is the possibility for bluetooth or even Wifi connection, as well as USB micro or USB-C.

If USB is used my first thought would be: did you try another cable? Some USB cables don't function for data transport on certain devices, where the same cable does function on others, so is my experience. What the (technical) reason of that might be, I don't know.

And important question: did it function before or is this the first time you are trying to connect that device to your PC?

Kees, Thank you for your reply. The Kindle is a Fire HD 8. I want to transfer a book from PC to Kindle, I will try to send it in E-mail as kindles come with an Amazon E-mail address. This is the first time trying to connect. I never had a problem with smart phones on older windows versions being recognized, but haven't tried in a while. I assumed it would work as it seems basic. Thanks again, OtisWoe.

Still don't know what connection you are trying to use. USB? Which version?
Did you indeed try another cable?

We have to manage with very limited information... Not knowing what connection you use, what drivers you might have l installed, what app you are using to transfer the data etc.

Why not post detailed information about that Fire 8 HD?

It´s no longer possible to send books from Kindle to PC or vice versa via USB. There is another procedure, you may search for it.

You can read books in your Kindle library on multiple devices.

For a PC, there's a free app to read Kindle books. The minor downside I see to that is you'll use bandwidth to download the book your PC.

As of 2/26/25 Kindle transfer via usb was discontinued. If you want to read a kindle book you have downloaded to your Kindle Fire on your PC you have to install the Kindle for PC app.
You can then download the book to the PC. Your progress syncs between all the devices you are reading a particular book on.

The book isn't in your Kindle library?

If it's not, you can upload it there. (I did that with some Project Gutenberg ebooks.) https://www.amazon.com/sendtokindle

It would have been beneficial to say what you wished to do in your first post.
