Hi,

I have my laptop connected using a USB 3.0 Gigabyte adaptor.

Very often it get's disconnected and the laptop gets connected via Wi-Fi. I have to replug it into the USB port. Same occurs if I connect using USB-C.

At times plugging out and in of the adsl modem wire helps...….

Any idea why is this happening?

Do I need to make any changes in BIOS> Power management?

Hoping to hear as always from you experts.

Thanks.

EDIT:

A couple of times viewed a W11 error message...…" Hardware error encountered, let Windows gather info and would restart" It gathered info for a few seconds and on restart it was back to lan from WiFi.

Try this:

Open Control Panel > Netword and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings.

For both your WiFi and Ethernet adapters, do this:

Right-click the adapter and select Properties.

Select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4" and then click on Properties. Be careful not to click by the checkbox to avoid enabling / disabling this.

Click on Advanced, uncheck the Automatic metric box, put in an interface metric number, click ok, ok.

NOTE: The number you place here doesn't matter. What matters is the relative number. A LOWER number gets higher priority. In your case you want a LOWER number for the Ethernet adapter.

If Internet Protocol Version 6 is enabled (it has a check mark), then do the same thing here, using the same number you used for Version 4. Technically, the numbers can be different, this just makes it easier.

Repeat the above steps for the other adapter.

Remember, use LOWER number for the Ethernet adapter.

After you do this, your Ethernet adapter should get priority when it is connected.

Thanks for the expert reply, appreciate it.

What exactly should I place for ethernet TCP/IPv4 and the same for TCP/IPv6.....e.g. 1111?

And for Wi-Fi......IPv4/6 both 2222?

Apologize for my ignorance.

Any numbers would work. 1 and 5, 1 and 10, 20 and 100, it does not matter, so long as the Ethernet adapter gets a number lower than the WiFi adapter.

The numbers give the adapters a priority. When more than one adapter is connected to the machine at a time, for example WiFi and Ethernet, the one with the LOWER number gets priority.

Have a one question.
I put 1111 for both IPv4, and IPv6 for ethernet and 2222 for Wifi. It's now working fine, no issues.

You gave an example 1-5, 1-10, 20-100..a bit confusing. Are they for IPv4 and IPv6 Ethernet and Wifi? It can be single, double digits, not necessarily 4, like what I put ...1111/2222?

Care to give a hypothetical example of what you would put for IPv4 and IPv6 Ethernet and Wifi respectively?

I'd appreciate it.

Thanks again.
Best regards!

Sure, on my computer I use 1 for my Ethernet adapter (both for IP v4 and v6) and then I use 2 for WiFi (both IP v4 and v6). Because 11 is a lower number than 2, the Ethernet adapter gets the priority.

Again, the numbers mean absolutely nothing. It's simply what order to prioritize the adapters with the lowest number getting priority and working up from lowest to highest.

Does that make sense?

So, for IP v4, the priority is the Ethernet adapter because it has a metric of one and WiFi is 2.

For IP v6, it's exactly the same thing.

NOTE: On some of my machines, I simply disable IP v6 and don't use it, so for those machines I only set a metric on the IP v4.

If anything still does not make sense, please let me know and I'll try my best to explain further. Just let me know as specifically as possible anything that is not clear to you.

The way I was taught and they way I have taught,

think of it as a race or queue for access to the internet 1 is first place , 2 is second place and so on.

With computer systems where you may need to add another option at a later date with priority between two other options it's a good idea to use 10, 20, 30 etc as this allows you to add eg.15 for another option without having to worry about renumbering the later entries

The system is the same as the one taught for line numbering when coding, so is not new - "If it ain't Broke, don't fix it"

Thanks for the expert input.
10, 20, 30 does make sense... for another option.

Best regards!
