Thanks, it's supposed to start cooling a bit by the weekend. I ventured out into the back garden just now, still in the 90's but enough of a breeze to make it tolerable (as long as you stay in the shade).

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

My temp indoors had peaked at 30.2°C (86.4°F) by 7:30pm, while outside it had fallen to the same temp, having peaked around 4:00pm with 34°C/93°F.

All my windows are now open and the house is slowly cooling down. It may not cool much overnight though. There's a 'tropical night' in store, with every chance of setting a new record for the highest June night time minimum temp.

On Wednesday night, the UK saw its warmest June night on record, according to provisional figures, making it a difficult night for many people sleeping. Overnight temperatures in Cardiff did not drop below 23.5C, exceeding the previous record of 22.7C set in 1976.

But that record could be broken again on Thursday night....

All this talk about my poor old netbook got me wondering (again) if it's the charging circuit that burned out, or just a terminally dead battery? Once I'd asked myself that question I couldn't rest until I'd answered it - one way or the other. So I risked a little more of my money and bought the 2nd cheapest battery I could find (£15 on Amazon, the cheapest was on Alibaba - half the price but 3 months delivery time all the way from China).

Well, Microsoft have unexpectedly blessed it with another year of useful life, they've just extended the Consumer ESU program for a 2nd year. It now ends in October 2027 instead of 2026.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

Yeah i remember you had to pay for ESU on 7 and it wasn't free as it is on win10... or it isn't really free-free as you have to register an MS-account.. but almost free :-)
I remember someone on 7 forums that did some installer for ESU updates without the need to buy them.. I never used it.. so my w7 computers isn't updated sice late 2017.. as they started with the one big updates every month instead of many small ones.. and i didn't want the updated that made the CPU work harder.. so i skipped all updates after that.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.

    My SYSTEM EIGHT is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e (5th gen) type 20LN, Celeron N4120, 8GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, a supported device for Windows 11. Currently running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds as native boot vhdx.

Re MS extending ESU. I'll bet the price of new computers had something to do with it. People would have a very bad taste in their mouth having to finally abandon a working device for a very high price device. Not that MS usually cares about people but I bet it came up.
