Got called out to setup another TV. Impossible for senior seniors. Layers and layer of menus, pairing remotes, ports that act as input unless you are using ARC output. Then they have the old, but working, DVD players with three wires, vid, sound left and right. Ain't got those ports on the new fang dangle TV's.

Got the basic TV working with sound, need to replace dvd or get weird cable adapter. TV doesn't like voice commands, under investigation.

TVs are a pain these days - as complex to set up as a PC, but with a different proprietary OS/GUI from each OEM 🤯

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

The only experience i have of a smart TV is using one for a day at a friends house.. netflix and power on and off is my knowledge from that day. *lol*

Well, I have just done a "Marie" - I have just pulled an all-nighter, fixing one of my machines :scream:

It all started so innocently, I was investigating why I couldn't update the BIOS on my System Eight, and somehow the CMOS got corrupted. On this particular model that can be fatal - it basically bricked the bios! I found lots of others on Reddit with the same bricked laptop :crys:

The prognosis wasn't good, apparently the only known solution was to replace the BIOS chip (or the system board).....

....we have dozens of ThinkPad Yoga 11es (model 20LM). During the COVID lockdowns, most of these devices sat unused for nearly a year and a half. During that time, some of them had their CMOS battery die completely. Since then, the devices will POST, get to the Lenovo splash screen, then display "error 0271: time and date not correct" and "error 0251: CMOS Checksum bad: configuration changed." Almost immediately after displaying these errors, the device shuts down and starts the boot process again. Unfortunately, replacing the CMOS battery does not help resolve the issue. Still can't boot into BIOS to fix the time and date issue or reset the CMOS.....

.....We did learn that replacing the system board did fix the issue....

I had the same problem. It can be repaired quite easily but you have to buy: MSALAMON CH341A Programmer - it cost me $10. without having to solder with such a programmer, you will re-upload the new bios to your EEPROM.

Long story short - I tracked down a copy and used it to clear the CMOS data - and then had to find a YouTube video to show me how to re-write it all back again (to stop the BIOS complaining about missing serial numbers and machine IDs at boot).

In the process of doing all this I had (of course) wiped all the CA 2023 certificates from the BIOS, so I now couldn't turn secure boot back on (my Windows had already been updated to the 2023 certified boot files) But thanks to @garlin I could put them all back again :thumbsup:

By the time all that was done and the machine was working perfectly again (I'm posting from it) it was 7am and the sun had already been up for a few hours. There's little point in trying to sleep now......

Time for a coffee or three..... :coffee::coffee::coffee:

😄*lol* Haven't you learned its dangerous to start tweaking with computers late in the evening. 😅

I'm glad it all worked out even if it looked dark there for a minute. :-)
Now you know why i never update my bioses if i dont have a gun to my head. *lol*😁 ... I have bricked one motherboard in my life on it.. and it was one to many.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

I haven't yet bricked any motherboard. This was my first and only time, and it was only temporary.

It wasn't that late when I started, then things went bad and I lost all track of time. It wasn't even the bios that got corrupted, that was intact throughout. It was the cmos that it uses to store its settings. Apparently it's a known bug for this specific bios, corrupt cmos data causes it to get stuck in a reboot loop. It tells you the errors, then reboots to see if it fixes them - in an endless loop!

F1 couldn't take you into the bios, it just rebooted. The only thing that still worked was F12 to choose a boot device (but only if you chose an external drive). In my case that was a usb with the maintenance utility on it. *phew*

I'm glad it worked out. as it is not fun to get a new paperweight... i know. :rolleyes: It was many years ago now.. i think it was a Pentium 2 or 3.

Well it wouldn't have been an expensive paperweight, not financially at least. It was an ebay purchase, sold 'as seen' without its ssd.

The real cost would have been all the time and effort I spent loving refurbishing and configuring it.
I would have felt gutted if that had been all for nothing. :-)

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.
