latest intel xe driver is replaced by old drive from windows updates

hello,
i am not able to figure out how to disable windows update to constantly replace my intel xe graphic card driver.

i tried steps from article How To Disable Specific Driver Updates In Windows 11/10
but its not what i want ... because if i just disable driver using Device Installation Restrictions ; in that case i am not able install the latest intel xe driver manually

disabling Manage updates offered from Windows Update is also not solution bc all the drivers from win update will be disabled for an update...

any ideas here? thanks!

No need to do anything, the drivers from Windows updates will work just fine.

The Intel Iris Xe driver on mine dates from July 2022, no problems. I know it is not the latest from Intel but why worry or mess about trying to update to what amounts to a less tested Beta-ish version.

@Helmut i understand but why use driver from july 2022 as there is new one from april 2023...
so still ... i want some drivers up to date.

After the latest one from Intel is installed (with reboot), I just go to Windows Update (via the command ms-settings:windowsupdate) to force it to install the outdated one, and then finally I install the latest one from Intel once more. Windows Update won't bother you with the outdated one anymore after that, at least not until Intel releases another new version of the driver and you decide to install that. I know it's tedious─and it really sucks. But it works...

As an alternative solution/workaround, you could decide to temporarily (until a new driver gets released by Intel) block Windows Update driver updates specifically for the Intel Iris Xe only:

no, what i am saying here is once OEM are installed windows update replace them with old version. I need to prevent that... somehow.

i tried but it getting all the time replaced by windows driver... doesnt work for me?

yes but its problematic

bc once u do this .. u event wont be able to install Intel OEM.

so apparently no solution for that? thanks

There is another way to block specific automatic updates that will still allow you to install updates manually. I've used this for many years on both Windows 10 and 11 and it's always worked great for me.

1) Start by downloading the Microsoft "Show or Hide Updates" Troubleshooter tool from the link below. My suggestion would be save a copy to somewhere like your desktop but you can simply run it directly if you prefer.

2) Select "Advanced" from the first screen.

3) Uncheck "Apply repairs automatically"

4) Select "Hide updates"

5) Select the update to hide. In the screenshot below I have highlighted the Intel XE display driver that my system wants to keep installing for my Intel Arc XE integrated graphics.

NOTE: Make sure that driver is not already installed first. Also, if the driver does not show up in the list of drivers available to hide, wait a day or two and then check again. In my experience, it seems like a driver does not always show up immediately, but it shows up with plenty of time to block it before it actually gets installed.

Once you hide an update, it will not be installed automatically by the system.

For me it works.

Install the driver from Intel
Let Windows Update replace it
Install the driver from Intel again.

That's why I said block it temporarily.

Prevent the driver from being able to be installed
When Intel releases a new driver version, undo the changes in the Windows registry
Install the driver
Continue to Step 1.

reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DeviceInstall\Restrictions /v "DenyDeviceIDsRetroactive" /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DeviceInstall\Restrictions\DenyDeviceIDs /v "1" /t REG_SZ /d "PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_9A49&SUBSYS_A0251E39" /f

Remember to reboot for changes to apply.

Unblock_Iris_Xe.bat (run as an Administrator) :

Batch:

reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DeviceInstall\Restrictions /f

Have you actually tied the Microsoft Show / Hide updates tool yet? I don't know why we're making this so difficult when that tool will easily do what you want.

Preventing it is exactly why I suggested to stop Windows update from installing any kind of drivers at all. This includes bios updates. My choice to be proactive and manage my own drivers makes more sense to me. The Intel tool keeps all my Intel drivers updated. All other updates I get come from my OEM (Dell in my case) through their tool, Dell Command Update.

I always use roll back driver in device manager. Give reason as latest one is better, from list of questions.
For some reason Windows keeps inserting older Intel drivers :grrr:

So, here is what I am finding: I block an old driver from being installed by Microsoft. So then, Microsoft simply installs an even older driver.

I had to finally resort to the group policy setting to prevent any changes whatsoever to that driver.
