Last couple stable updates have dropped VERY unwanted desktop shortcut. Have they added an opt-out switch for that somewhere?

Yep, I've noticed the same. I have simply deleted them. Honestly, I have not checked for an opt-out.

Me too. This morning, it was not only the icon on my desktop, but a new entry in the Start > All apps list as well. I hope this is just the result of updates, as suggested above, and not a new sign of MS aggressiveness. I used Autoruns to kill Edge AutoLaunch and Edge Installer, in the hope that those changes will stop this annoying behavior.

I don't mind using Edge; in fact, it's my preferred browser, but I hate ANY app that drops shortcuts on the desktop without asking first. I hate desktop clutter.....

I'm waiting to see if the policies below will work to stop the automatic Microsoft Edge desktop shortcut creation on each update considering this below from Microsoft:

If you enable this policy a desktop shortcut is created when Microsoft Edge is installed. If you disable this policy, no desktop shortcut will be created when Microsoft Edge is installed. If you don’t configure this policy a desktop shortcut to Microsoft Edge will be created during installation. If Microsoft Edge is already installed, this policy will have no effect.
