Latest office update keeps updating

I'm using MS office Home and Business 2021 version 2508 19127.20154 (Click to Run) first updated on 8/27/2025. Since that date its been updating daily to the same update. Outlook and Excel , main apps I use, seem to be working just fine. I only notice the need for update as the Event Viewer is showing numerous Restart manual logs, and SID does not match. I've restarted the machine twice, but the updates keep showing up needing a restart for last 5 days
at various times during the day.

Any ideas ?

Hi. Have you tried a repair?

• Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
• Find Microsoft Office Home and Business 2021 in the list.
• Click Change > Select Quick Repair > Run it.
• If the issue persists, repeat the steps and choose Online Repair (requires internet).

Quick Repair is faster and doesn’t require internet, but may not resolve deeper update issues.
Online Repair reinstalls Office components and may clear persistent update loops.

Another update just came out. Did the update , will watch see if anything happens now. 19127.20192 - 2508

Well, after update to to 19127.0222 ver 2508 the daily updates have returned. Office version 2021 Home & Business.

Probably you have to clear the Windows Update cache and restart. The easy way is to search for Disk Cleanup and use it on the Windows partition (C:). Click to also show system files and wait for the list to populate. Make sure you check the box for Windows Update and proceed. When it finishes restart. A more advanced way is to load Task Manager, go to Services section and stop the Windows Update service (wuservice). Then open This PC, then the Windows drive (C:), open Windows folder and finally open the Software Distribution folder. Delete all contents of this folder. Go back to Task Manager and start the Windows Update service. Search for updates, you shouldn't see the Office update again, only new updates, if any.

Thanks, Used the 'advanced' method will see what happens now.

UPdate: after clearing out things yesterday as shown above, it updated Office again today. No new version, just the current release again.
Off topic but Xbox game overlay is also updating daily. For the last 8 days. I don't have Xbox so I'm not too worried about that.

If you don't need the Xbox feature just uninstall or disable it.

The saga continues, still getting daily update for the same build on Office 2021 Home & Business.
I've done both 2 times now still getting updates daily.:
Quick Repair
Online Repair
SFC - no problems found
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth ran OK nothing found
Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase ran OK also.

For now I have just disabled updates , as new updates come around I will manually update and turn updates back off.

I don't know if its relevant but I did uninstall OneDrive while back but can't remember for sure if that's when this mess started.
I want NOTHING to do with OneDrive.

Another thing I see, and its been that way as far as I know since Installing Home & Business 2021 the updates are showing
Product Name: Office 16 Click-to-Run Extensibility Component. I never had Office 16, went from Office 2007 straight to 2021.

Welcome any other ideas. For now updates are OFF, will do them manually when they come out.
PS> The updates that keep repeating are only flagging Outlook (classic) , Excel it not affected as near as I can tell.

Last one what is this AI crap... So far MS has not forced my version of Home & Business to show the 'CoPilot' Icon anywhere.

Open Task Manager, go to Services, find wuserv (Windows Update service) and click to stop it. Then open File Explorer, Windows drive, open Windows folder and then the Software Distribution folder. Delete all contents. Back in Services click to start wuserv. Check Windows Update, there shouldn't be the specific update anymore.

PS: Office version 16 refers to Office 2016 or 2019, depending on exact version number.

@spapakons Tried your suggestion and no dice... it tried to update again a few hours after doing the procedure. I've done that twice now
and seems to not cure the issue. Thanks for the help however. I'm wondering if there is some registry key/keys that is causing this problem.

Outlook and other apps I use seem to work OK, so not going to worry about daily updates to the same update. Will just leave updates OFF.

See which update it is and manually download it from Microsoft Update Catalogue. In worst case use Revo Uninstall or similar to remove all traces of Office, then reinstall it.
