Solved Legacy RDP is missing

While the Win32 mstsc.exe Remote Desktop Connection is part of a standard Windows install, it can be uninstalled. If you had done so (intentionally or inadvertently) I wouldn't expect a repair install to put it back, I would expect it to only repair what is already installed.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

Such a simple solution and I looked all over for how to reinstall it!

Took less than 5 minutes.

I think I know what happened - I had the uwp version of RDP (nicer than the version above imo) installed and an MS screen popped up to say it was retired and did I want to delete it. I pressed yes, and the UWP version was removed, but I think;; the removal also removed the win32 version.

It makes me wonder if the uwp version was just a front end interfacing with the win32 files and that is why they got deleted as well.

In the end, I have got the perfect solution now.

I have not used the win32 version of rdp for a while and it is quite neat you can setup MS login credentials in it so you automatically login to Windows.
The Hyper-V vmconnect interface does not do this, so you have to use a password every time if using an MS account

One change I do not remember being in the win32 rdp app is the ability to select host drives to be included in the vm (vmconnect has always had that).

I've been using RDP a lot these past 6 months since I switched ISPs. My old ISP's router had a USB port that shared out any external drive plugged into it. The new one doesn't.

So I configured a spare laptop as a file server, to run 24/7, with my external drive(s) plugged into it. This was an ideal use for a laptop I'd stopped using because of display issues. The 'liquid' from its LCD display was leaking from the edges, making parts of the screen near-unreadable!

If I need to do any work on it I do it all by RDP.

for your situation, you should check out Dokan. you can map the drives from that PC as local disks on your pc. works great.

map = network drive
dokan allows you to 'map' drives from other PCs as Local disks.

I have shared my whole videos drive (J:) so I have full access to all folders and files from any other computer on the network. I have also shared my BD-R drive (D:) so I can use CD-ROMs or play DVD movies from my laptop without a DVD drive. Both these drives can be mapped to a specific drive letter and act as local. You don't need Dokan for that.

I don't map anything. All my network share access is done by UNC path - no drive letters involved. File History is one of my main uses for network storage, and the reason I quickly built this file server to replace my old router-shared drive when I switched ISPs. I could just plug the same 2TB external drive into the PC instead of the router and carry on as before.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
