Hello,
I have a big problem with Lenovo P50.
The BIOS completely deletes all fingerprints after each hard disk change.
But only if I change to a CleanInstall
It doesn't happen when InpaceUpgrdes from Win10 to Win11, each on separate disk.
If I now pack a clean install into the laptop, all fingerprints are deleted again.
I also tested only UEFI in the BIOS, and only Legacy MBR, the error remains.
In 3 other laptops :
Lenovo T500, W500 and T530 I can easily change the HDDs at will, even between UEFI and Legacy.
Maybe someone has an idea what the modern P50 can be?
I've already asked in other forums, Tenforums, Deskmodder, Lenovo Community... Unfortunately, no solution.

That can only be due to a stupid BIOS, the BIOS is up to date.:-)

The whole Windows Hello thing (as is MS explanation of it) is a bunch of clear as mud smoke and mirrors to me so I can't give a direct answer. If I was betting, I would bet it has something to do with your biometric scanner on that particular device. I recall that in Windows 10, certain windows updates caused some users to have to set up biometrics again. You might find your answer in this MS article. Pay special attention to the section "Where is biometric data stored"

Very interesting,
"The biometric data used to support Windows Hello is stored on the local device only,"
if I set up the Cleaninstall with fingerprint, it works perfectly, if I pack another system in, everything on FP is completely deleted again, although the FP are stored locally. Unfortunately, I don't have an idea. I had reset the FP in the BIOS at first, but the problem persists.
What can i do now, it works perfectly on the old Laptops.
It is for milking mice, because I like to change the HDDs, meanwhile only with the old laptops.

Windows Hello is directly controlled by the tpm, not the bios. I think I found your answer in another MS article.

TPMs are passive: they receive commands and return responses. To realize the full benefit of a TPM, the OEM must carefully integrate system hardware and firmware with the TPM to send it commands and react to its responses. TPMs were originally designed to provide security and privacy benefits to a platform’s owner and users, but newer versions can provide security and privacy benefits to the system hardware itself. Before it can be used for advanced scenarios, a TPM must be provisioned. Windows automatically provisions a TPM, but if the user reinstalls the operating system, user may need to tell the operating system to explicitly provision the TPM again before it can use all the TPM’s features.

Hmmmm ?
I can switch to TPM 2.0 in the BIOS, but what then, what exactly does MS mean by that:
user may need to tell the operating system to explicitly provision the TPM again before it can use all the TPM's features.
and MS say:
"The biometric data used to support Windows Hello is stored on the local device only,",
i think it is the HDD ? I'm waiting for more answers, maybe you'll find a solution, thank you for this important information.

I'm very sorry but I think I misinterpreted your post. After looking at the specifications on all those models you listed, I found you couldn't be relating to your fingerprint reader in conjunction with Windows Hello as none of those models, except the P50, has any kind of tpm at all. The P50 factory specs shows to have a discrete 1.2 tpm and a firmware TPM 2.0 integrated in the chipset.
My statement in post #4 is also not totally correct. I should have included that it depends on what kind of tpm one uses as to how Windows Hello is controlled. I was referring to TPM 2.0 (What MS officially supports) So if on the p50 you are using the firmware tpm, then yes the bios is involved with Windows Hello....if you are using Hello.

Other than with possibly the P50 I can not imagine how those other devices are running Windows 11 at all as they came out in 2008. I would not have expected any drivers would be available that would work in Windows 11..
So again, sorry for the misinformation. I was confused all the way around.

No Problem,
but all Thinkpads have a TPM Chip Version 1.2, but only the P50 can change to TPM 2.0 about the BIOS,
The Oldie Laptops T500, W500 are from 2009-2010, T530 2013, P50 from 2017, have BIOS up to date, the old Drivers working very fine with Windows 11,
Only the stupid BIOS of the P50 causes these problems, I don't understand why the most modern of all things is doing such crap.
Very annoying.

As a test, I deactivated the tpm chip, the problem persists, so the tpm has nothing to do with the fingerprint, I can still use it, presumably you only need the tpm for bitlocker?
