Local Account Windows Hello PIN when in Safe Mode?

Hi,

Just like to confirm if attempting to sign-in under Safe Mode, will the Local Account Windows PIN work or would it fall back to using a password sign-in?

If I remember correctly it asks for the password, not the PIN, but I am not sure. Surely fingerprint and Windows Hello (face recognition) don't work because in Safe Mode the respective devices don't have drivers loaded, I am not sure about PIN.

My PIN works in Safe Mode, but I am using a MS account.

I just created a local account, set up a PIN and booted into Safe Mode. I was able to log in with my PIN.

It's kinda hit and miss if you're troubleshooting an issue and especially an account issue. It use to be you had to use a password as that was the only way to get in. Now a PIN will usually get you in as long as certain services aren't borked up. Being a believer in Murphy's Law I like to still keep a password handy as a backup when or if things get totally FUBAR.

You can't set up a PIN without a password. It's up to you if you decide to forget the password later!

You better don't forget the password. Like the previous poster said, PIN might not work if some services don't run or are corrupt. Password always works. If however you forget it, you can use Sergei Strelec WinPE which is a live Windows USB with many tools, including password reset tools. If the account is local you can use one of these tools to change the password or remove it. If it is a Microsoft account the first tool on the list automatically converts it to local and then changes or removes the password.
