Location to Install Windows 11 question

Windows 11 Pro 22H2
Recently I had noticed something new when I was attempting to clean install Windows 11 24H2 in the partition setup or on the Location to Install Windows.

It appears that it also lists my Windows 11 Bootable USB flash drive marked as Disk 1 Partition (USB).

This wasn't the case when installing Windows 10.

Is this a new thing?

I don't remember if it also list the removable drives.
Anyway you point to install on unallocated space and to have an big unallocated space normally you clean all drive.

I have recently seen it installing 24H2 from USB image made in january.
I could not understand I could not delete the partions until I realised it
was the USB I was installing from :oops:

Not sure but it's something I've noticed recently, the USB boot drive being listed as one of the drives (incl the partitions on the USB boot). Adds a bit of confusion but just needs paying attention when you start deleting partitions for a clean install on the target system drive

I’ve seen it on screenshots posted by members in here. I don’t think there is a single thing to worry about, you’re not going to install it there anyway. It’s obvious that you are well versed enough to notice it.

When I first tried a clean install of 24H2, it listed every single internal hard drive on my computer. And you’re right, Windows 10 never did this for me. It only ever recognised unallocated space. Or if I hadn’t diskparted the C drive, it recognised the “C” drive.
I found a clean install much more user friendly with Windows 10.

I just tested this and looks like that the partition section/setup page doesn't even allow you to Delete or Install Windows on the external USB media to prevent accidentally from deleting the data from any external USB drives or partitions under which are marked as Disk 1.

So only DISK 0 partitions needs to be all deleted and installing Windows on the remaining DISK 0 UALLOCATED SPACE.

I can only tell you what I would personally do. Make very sure you’re diskparting the correct drive.

In relation to Disk 1 — At the following window:

  • Hit the Shift + F10 keys
    • A command window will open
    • Press enter after typing in each command below and let it complete the command, you’ll know when each command is done as it will repeat the command to you or give a result for the command.

    • Type; diskpart [enter]
    • Type; list disk [enter]
    • Type; select disk X [enter]
      • X being the drive position/number of your install drive. Be careful that you are cleaning the right drive/disk, hence disconnecting any secondary drives. Don’t accidentally diskpart your USB Pen drive. It will have the disk size next to each disk entry.
    • Type; clean [enter]
    • Type; convert gpt [enter]
    • Type; exit [enter]
    • Close the command window
    • Continue with the install

Result is that the partitions on Disk 1 will be removed and any unallocated space will be merged into one disk — Disk 1

I don't understand why use diskpart. If you boot the installation drive as UEFI and clean all partitions it will make the drive GPT and the installation will be on the correct partitions order.

If you do do a diskpart clean+convert gpt it will create a MSR partition on the beginning of the drive (and it wont be on the correct partitions order.

I think this started with the installation options for Win11 24H2. The previous versions did not display the booted flash drive.

The last couple of times I cleaned installed Windows 24H2 it did show the USB drive I was using to do the install.

I am pretty sure that is the case.... When I was installing windows 11 on my girl friends new PC with the usb stick I also noticed you have to turn off legacy support in the bios too.... There is so many issues with windows 11 honestly and they are forcing us to all upgrade or we loose whatever security we should have over the nodes on the network..... All thanks to this silly AI stuff they are pushing..... The light version of win 11 would be great if they allowed us to have personal activation keys but they will not give it out unless you are buying licenses for I think its more then 100 nodes.... This is the enterprise version I am talking about.... I was trying to run this on my old clunker to see how it reacts but anything predating 2010 it will come up with errors its pretty sad....

But also looking from that screen shot left after I read the first post it looks normal disc 0 primary would be the destination of your new OS and your USB stick is disc 1. So you install into Disc 0 primary
