Locking a document

I'm writing a Word document using Word 365. I want and have the document justified. As I write, it moves to smaller or larger. Hoping to stop this movement, I set the text to LAYOUT then to SIZE and picked LEGAL as the size. It still will get smaller or larger as I work. I can't find a way to lock the document so it doesn't get smaller or larger. How do I lock the document so it does move smaller or larger as I work on it?

You are probably using the normal template. This can be handled in one of 3 ways,
1. modify the normal template (which affects all documents and I do not suggest this)

3. using one of the templates built into Word. Word has a few legal templates buit in to it, but they might not suit your purpose. Open Word, click more templates, on that page in the search box type "legal". If one of them will work for you, select it. You can use the template as is OR use it as a base for a custom template you make yourself.

There are sites on the web that provide both free and paid legal templates you can download.

Are you saying the font size changes by itself as you are typing? Surely that's impossible. Can't help there I'm afraid but there is a website that specialises in Office so you might try that. They are very good.

And, to stop a lot of toing & froing, when does it happen?
- Is there any common pattern to the occurrences?
- Are you, perhaps, using some particular keyboard key combinations at the time?

Hi Bob, welcome.

If you enter the View tab at the top, you can play with these:

Go to "View"
Select "Print Layout" and check the other view options.

100% width

Full page

You can now adjust the size of the page (View Only) by holding down the Ctrl key and using the scroll wheel on your mouse.
Or you can use Ctrl and + keys to adjust size.
Or you can click the zoom icon or magnifying glass icon.

Perhaps you're accidentally moving the mouse scroll wheel whilst holding the Ctrl key.

What's "it"?? The font size? The (on-screen) page view size? The document file size?

Are you working in/using columns and/or tables? (both have autofit settings)

He can't be doing this because he says "as I write" meaning he is writing at the time it (whatever 'it' is) is happening.

Ken,

It's possible, but this is just speculation since we don't have enough info to go on, that the problem is happening when he intends to type

using Shift-[
but is accidentally entering
Ctrl-[
which decreases the font size.
(The ] equivalent would increase the font size.)

This might be caused by finger trouble, by muck underneath the keys or by other keyboard faults.

I assume from the OP's timezone that the OP uses a US keyboard layout that, like the UK one, has { and [ on the same key.

Thanks for all the help but I didn't make myself clear. The movement I referred to is the same as when you place a finger of each hand on the page/document and spread your fingers out to make the page and text bigger or when you place a finger of each hand and pull the text/page inward/together to make the page and text smaller. What I am asking is how to lock the document to keep page/text the same 'size'. More info: this is a large document that is justified. I'm required to use a text size of 11 (eleven) and the font 'bookerly' for this document. I only give you this information in case it will shed light on the problem but that information isn't directly related to the problem I'm seeking to solve.

So, you are talking about zoom levels changing not text size or page size changing - in other words, you are only talking about how the document appears on-screen.
My previous post about [ and { is not relevant.
I now wonder if you are accidentally pressing Ctrl-Plus or Ctrl-Minus or Ctrl-Zero [or Ctrl-Scroll as mentioned by another member above].
Exactly what are you doing when the problem occurs? Trying to press Shift with one of those other keys, perhaps?

No, Denis... I'm just typing or making corrections. So when described as 'zoom' I want the document locked so it doesn't zoom. I have no need for the document to 'zoom'.

I do not believe any such setting exists.
And, just to avoid misunderstandings, it's the view that gets zoomed not the document itself.

And what I expect is that you are triggering these zooms despite just wanting to type. That's why I suspect accidental key combinations being involved.

Denis, I didn't want to get into why this is a problem but I'll try to explain it. The zooms most often happen when I try to highlight a word or a section and the cursor kind of sticks and instead of highlighting, it pulls, resulting in a zoom. If you remember, I said my document is justified. I write paragraphs so the right 'edge' is very close to looking like it is already justified so when I do justify the paragraph, you won't see noticeable spaces between some words. The problem--- if the document gets zoomed, a justify, completed paragraph is no longer justified if I go back to edit that paragraph. I believe this can only be caused by the zooming. I hope I explained it well enough. You apparently don't think there is any way to lock the document so zooming doesn't happen?

But zooming does not affect any aspect of the contents of a document.
A para that is justified at one zooming level remains justified at all other zooming levels.
Zooming is exactly the same as holding up a magnifying lens between you & the document - the document itself is unchanged.

For example, this document was screenshot at two different levels of zoom. Every line is exactly the same in both pictures and their justifications are unchanged.
If you could see the bottom-right corner of each picture, you'd see the zoom slider is set at different levels.
[You only know the zooms are different because my Ribbon & my Quick access toolbar appear bigger or smaller in the screenshots.]

So I no longer think I understood you after all.
Please play around with the zoom slider shown in the bottom-right of the Word window and you'll see what zooming is and that it does not alter document justifications [or anything else].

I think some unintended key combination is being engaged when you try to do that highlighting task.

Hi, Bob. You obviously did make yourself clear, because I responded above mentioning that you’re somehow triggering the zoom.
There is no definitive “Lock Preview” view setting in Office.

Lets see if disabling zoom by mouse wheel helps? I don’t have Microsoft 365 anymore, but can you check the following, please.
If it is there:

File > Options > Advanced > Editing options
Turn off:

Zoom on roll with IntelliMouse

Page view and page formatting are two different things.

Page view changes how the draft/print preview displays for viewing only.
Page formatting is for things like your size 11 Bookerly font. ( side note: If copy/pasting, paste text only - without formatting)

Another question:

Are you using a mouse or your Touchpad?

Try another keyboard - faulty (shortcut) keys that are activating ("shorting" out?) while you're typing?
