Hi Guys hope you're all good.

I brought my Dell XPS 15 9510 Laptop 8 months ago the spec being:-

11th Generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-11800H (24MB
Cache, up to 4.6 GHz, 8 cores)
15.6" OLED 3.5K (3456x2160)
64GB, 2x32GB, DDR4, 3200MHz
NVIDIA(R) GeForce RTX(TM) 3050 Ti 4GB GDDR6 [45W]
Intel UHD Graphics

Windows 11 Pre installed version 21H1 and all builds up to now 22621.1344 with Moment 2 installed have suffered this issue. This model is in Microsoft's recommended Windows 11 Laptops

There are no other performance issues at all e.g. playing 4K Videos, playing games etc is smooth and run as they should, no blue screens ever or anything untoward in event viewer etc..

The issue is and always has been with the general performance of the User Interface of Windows 11, transition animations stick and stutter, dragging windows around the screen flicker and jump when dragging around. When I say flicker the worst culprits are the MS Store, Settings App especially bad when the Personalisation Color Picker is visible, dragging those apps will cause dragging to stick jump and the contents to flicker like crazy. There are no issues in task manager, nothing using high amount of resources, Gpu (Intel UHD Grahics) is ok and shown hardly any load.

Semi fix is to disable transparency effects in Display Settings. I've noticed there's maybe 5 seconds everything becomes really slick and smooth and then randomly bang, it all starts lagging and stuttering and flickering again.

I have got so completely annoyed I tried an install of Windows 10 and that is a hugely different experience, its runs beautifully smooth in all aspects, so much so I use 10 now as my daily driver on this machine.

Steps taken to try to resolve over the months to no avail-

· Disable Intel Speedstep, TurboBoost C states in bios in different arrangements

· Make sure the latest Dell bios is installed the day it is released.

· Reset Bios do defaults

· Restore of Dell factory build of Windows 11 using SuportAssist

· Download MS Windows ISO direct from MS and format the SSD manually and do a clean build with ISO image

· Try lower display resolutions

· Disable Nvidia GPU in device manager

· Set Dell power management in Bios to Ultra Performance

· Keeping external power cable plugged in

· Using a wired mouse or wireless mouse with high poling rate

· Try an external monitor at high and low resolutions.

· Set a custom config in Windows Power Plan and set CPU for all states to 100% and disable power management in Pci Express

· Using DDU display driver uninstaller in safe mode and removed Intel UHD Driver and Nvida and re installed both using dell original and also tried the same with generic drivers direct from Intel and Nvidia.

I've now ran out of ideas. I now have a second SSD drive in the machine one with Windows 10 and the other with 11 I installed with the MS ISO

10 Runs perfectly but still choppy UI on 11

Has anyone else noticed the same issues with their 4k or near UHD laptop like mine? I've read a few threads around with similar performance issued on Intel UHD including Lenovo. I'm slightly annoyed a £2000 Laptop runs Windows 11 poorly where it can run 10 perfectly well.

Thanks for your help Guys

Have you tried clean installing Windows 11 using latest version?

Have tried to upgrade to Windows 11?

I have tried a clean install from the iso from MS servers.

The only thing I havent tried is upgrading from 10 to 11 as the laptop was supplied from Dell with 11 already pre installed so originally I just wiped it and downloaded 11 was still the same so wiped it again downloaded 10 iso and installed that and ran perfectly.

I could try to wipe install 10 again and the run an upgrade to 11, huge pain in the ass though 😅

Thanks I’ll give it ago, I don’t hold much hope of it working but know I have to try every angle. The thing is if I go to Dell support they will just come out and replace a perfectly good motherboard for no reason like I’ve been reading all over their support forums when things get like my issue 😄 I’m loathed to go down that road as it cant be a hardware problem with 10 running so well on it that I thrash every day for work without any glitches at all, it just runs like melted butter on 10

Update:

Still exactly the same. I’ve given up now on 11 on this machine anyway. I found out that if shrink the app windows size smaller basically so less information is displayed in the window, all the dragging choppiness disappears, which at the end of the day this uhd laptop’s Gpu is too underpowered to handle Windows 11 and just Windows 11

I tried Ubuntu on it and like windows 10 runs like a rocket too everything fine.

Try installing Windows 11 driver offer by your computer manufacturer, you can also use Windows 10 driver.

I’ve tried older drivers back to the first generic uhd driver from Intels site and Dells version all using DDU under safe mode, also the same with chipset drivers etc. I’ve spent 8 months doing every single thing and ran out of patience now 😁

Dont worry I’ll be using Windows 10 only on this and then in a couple of years when it retires I’ll scrap the machine and get a standard FHD laptop for work.

Have you got another Windows 10 machine you can compare it by? I’m sure if you installed 10 on it you’ll be shocked by its performance increase

Hi Gary,

If you dont mind could I send you a DM? Your machine is exactly the same as mine, good to see another 9510 owner

Yours is a higher spec I9 Tigerlake mines the i7 version. I wouldn't have thought mine would be that bad spec 🤪. The thing is though why just the Windows UI. Like yours with everything else mine runs like a dream 🥲😓

@Mannix, No problem with a DM. As I would expect, my 9510 is noticeably faster than my lower specification System Two computer that also runs Windows 11 Pro.
