Looking at a new Laptop, can I just install my current SSD and it will work?

I am looking at a dell 14s with the X7 ultra processor. I currently have the 5406 inspiron with the 1165g7. I am wondering can I just install my drive into the new system and pick up where I left off after WIndows gets the drivers updated for the new hardware? I want to keep my current OS configuration and 2tb drive instead of the 1tb that comes with the system.

I doubt it. The OS will detect the new hardware and Win 11 will need to get a new license.

Most likely, you will be able to start Windows only in Safe Mode, because without specific drivers for MB, disk drive and video it may end boot with BSOD. However, in such case you can use repair update or reinstall OS with keeping all apps and user files. As for reactivation, it depends on your current version: yes for retail, no for OEM.

It has a good chance of working, but I strongly recommend making a backup before moving the SSD.

If there is no valid "Windows Boot Manager" entry in NVRAM (as in this case):
- On many computers, depending on the firmware implementation, the UEFI firmware may automatically detect \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi on the EFI system partition and then start the Windows boot process.
- Alternatively, the UEFI firmware uses the path \EFI\Boot\bootx64.efi as the default fallback boot path if no valid NVRAM boot entry is found.

Windows 11 is generally quite good at booting after a motherboard change and detecting new hardware, after which Windows Update and Dell's support software can install the appropriate drivers. However, it is not guaranteed. Storage-controller differences such as Intel RST/VMD, BitLocker, Secure Boot, or missing boot-critical drivers can prevent the existing installation from booting initially.

Activation should normally be straightforward if the new laptop includes a Windows license for the same edition (Home or Pro) as the existing installation. Windows activation is tied substantially to the motherboard, so moving the SSD to another laptop counts as a major hardware change. The new laptop's OEM license/digital entitlement should normally activate the matching Windows edition once the computer is online.

I never have understood why anyone wants an old Windows installation and all the garbage it brings with it on a brand new device. Trying to shortcut things can bring a ton of trouble. The best way is to set up the new device cleanly. Install your apps, copy your data onto it and get it set up how you like. Then if you want to use the old drive, make an image of your new system and restore that image to the old drive.

Sure it takes some time, but you know there's nothing lurking that either inhibits the performance of the new system, can bite you in the butt later, or will revoke Dell's warranty.

I'm gonna' have to agree 100%, I ran my main Windows 10 system for three or four years, and lots of baggage had built up. It also had a couple if idiosyncrasies that I simply ignored, but I knew they were there.

When I moved to Win11 last year at last, I left all of that behind. Sure, I got a bunch of new Win11 idiosyncrasies, but at least I didn't have the old ones!

When one tries to transfer apps from one installation to another using any means. it's just more shortcutting. Only a clean install of apps 100% insures all appdata and all registry entries are intact. I'm a better safe than sorry kind of gal and do what I know works right in the first place. But I do me and you do you. If you're happy with the result, good on you. We don't all look at things the same way.

Please describe the "garbage" you speak of?

It should work, you may just need to get a cheap license to reactivate it with if the new laptop does not come with its own license in BIOS.
