Solved LSA , Why?

So, just saw a thread where the OP has the LSA off and asking to turn it on.

I am wondering, if it's that important , why is it off by default?
Any hits to performance.

Make a sandwich, get something to drink, and have a few reads.


And above all else, get and use good 3rd party backup software. When all else fails a good backup can save your bacon.

I have read through lots today so, a simple answer is what I'm really looking for Ghot.
Do you have LSA activated on your machine and if so, why?
Is it the same as DEP?
Does it pose any draw backs as far as performance goes?
It's off on this notebook at the moment I'm guessing by default because I didn't touch it.

No I don't. I use 3rd party backup software religiously. There's very few things it can't recover from. Very few.
This allows me to "wait and see" for the "simple" explanations for things.

Another option would be to Google: LSA vs DEP

While the tutorial will have the official explanations... they are sometimes hard to understand.

Another thing to keep in mind... MS has to hang out on the cutting edge of computer security.
Unless you're doing something like multi-million dollar trades on a daily basis, you probably won't be anyone's target.
So, you can relax a bit and just wait for the simple explanations. The bad guys won't even know you exist.

Backup software IS pretty much the best security you can get.





We recommend this over and over on these forums, for a reason. It just works.

Thank you . I did , that's why I said I read allot today. My eyes
are red and itching.

Then why so many people have problems with it. I get it but, they should at least have
the security modules that they install working right the first time right?

Yes, I think I already mentioned somewhere that, I too use Macrium on a stick, an nvme stick.

Well, not hard to understand the principal of it but, is it really necessary for a home or gaming rig.
And, how much of a hit is it to performance if any.

To Microsoft... we... regular consumers, just don't count. We're probably .001% of their business.
In my opinion, a lot of the "security" scenarios that Microsoft "has" to worry about, are corporate security issues.

You have to take MS's security advisories with a grain of salt. They exist, they are true... but in most cases, they just don't apply to Joe-computer-user.

Don't fall for stupid scams. Don't click on stupid things and have a good backup system.
I've been involved with computers, home and business for about 40 years. And that is the best advice I can give.

A ways back, I remember an article in Scientific American about the birth of 256 bit encryption.
It was the latest and greatest thing to come down the pike.
A thirteen year old Japanese kid cracked it in 15 minutes. The point here is this...

No matter what security methods get invented... sooner or later they will get cracked. This happens over and over.
Any person with a computer has to decide for themselves, where to draw the line.

After everything I've seen... using backups religiously is the single best thing you can do for yourself.
That and a good strong password.



And on that subject... keep the used space on your Windows drive, small. This makes backups and restores, very fast.
Install large programs (like games), on a storage drive. All you really need to backup in games is the save files.


This is more or less, the best system that I have come up with... it takes me about 2 mins. to do a backup or restore.

Yes, I've seen quite a bit myself but, get hacked and backups are not very helpful and that I can
vouch for but not at home.
The reason I was asking was , if anyone new why this security module is not enabled by default
and if any hits to performance.

The days when Microsoft was generous and simplistic in there explanations is long gone.
They've decided that wasn't economically feasible any longer.
The best description any of us have, at present, is the links in the tutorial I linked above.

In a few months... you'll start to see translations of those Microsoft explanations, pop up on the web.

These forums are inhabited by volunteers. We also struggle to understand Micro-speak.
If you want better explanations than in the links in the tutorial, you'll just have to wait until they appear naturally.

Believe me, if I had a simple explanation, I'd give it to you. I love simple explanations.

Thank you, A simple answer.
I have been searching the Google all day and not a grain of sanity to be found.
No one has any idea of what I was asking or if it even is relevant. It is Off by
default (LSA) on this MSI notebook and this is how it will stay. I bought this
to replace my MSI GT73 Titan because of newer games and I will not sacrifice
any performance. So far, it is well behaved.
Hope you and I find more simple answers.

Every time something new pops up, it takes a while for someone to translate the Micro-speak.
Posters have their favorite things. Like @jimbo45 is probably the Virtual Machine king on these forums.
So when a new VM thing pops up, we just wait for him to translate the gobble-de-gook, that MS spews.

So all you need do, is wait for the LSA vs DEP guy (whoever that will be), to translate the MS explanations in the tutorial.
Who knows? The LSA vs DEP guy, may turn out to be... you.

OH, hadn't seen the rest of this post. You edited on me!
My backups are not as elaborate as yours. Since this is just a gaming
rig, I keep nothing on here but games. The rest goes off to the 4 & 8TB
external drives. I do have a T7 hooked up to the Thunderbolt but, just as
a temporary storage until it is emptied to the other drives. Quick and easy.
My backups are simply dumped on a 1TB nvme in a external case which I
gerry rigged myself. Does the job and refreshed every month. As I mentioned
before, I will start the long voyage (when time permits) learn and experiment with
a NAS. I have been wanting to do this for many years now but, you know life.

Like I said, a long journey. Plus, I have to read about which one
will be Simple enough for me to understand and configure.

You can argue that the average user doesn't have the same needs as these very large companies I work for, and you would be partially correct. My point, I guess, is that I began using Sandboxie (and these days am using Sandboxie-Plus) mainly to protect my browser almost a whole decade before Microsoft finally introduced Windows Sandbox (built-in feature of Windows 10/11) so now the old concept of using isolation software to run processes in a temporary, isolated environment is right there in Windows by default... whether the average user even knows about it or not. Edge browser also uses Windows Sandbox. The discontinued, non Chromium based version of Edge did not. A lot of people don't even understand that they need BOTH fire insurance AND smoke detecting alarms BEFORE their house catches on fire, EXACTLY BECAUSE they never witnessed it being on fire. They ONLY learn it AFTER it's all burned to the ground. Naturally, and of course.

I used Sandboxie when it first came out. I think it was XP for me.
If I remember correctly, there was also a paid version at the time.
I downloaded it the other day after I read it here and it might have been
you who mentioned it in another thread. Haven't installed it yet
because there are so many other questions I have about W11 that
it consumes most of my time. I do have other priorities as well so,
I'll get around to it latter.
