Is anyone running their OS from an M.2 NVM SSD? If so, any problems? Are they faster than a traditional SSD?

Never had a 'traditional SSD'. I went straight from HDD to PCIe 3 NVM SSD. The only problem is that they evolved the bus to PCIe version 4. Meaning there is problem with backward compatibility. Reports suggest there is not a lot of difference between PCIe 3 and PCIe 4 NVM SSD speeds, because it is so blinking quick.

Running my Adata xpg sx8200 pro 1tb as my main drive with win 11 installed on it and have my ssd as my second drive for various bits and bobs. I would say yeah its for sure quicker than my ssd, I had 10 installed on the SSD when i first got it and then changed it over to my m2 once i had got that and its quicker for sure, It isnt night and day though. its just a nice amount quicker but its probably minor in most normal daily tasks, I do use it as my gaming install drive and theres 100% a reasonable difference between the two in that regard, But thats all i generally use it for, gaming and daily browsing

Running Win 11 from Kingston A2000 M.2 NVMe, and other system on SATA SSD.

Yes, NVMe are faster, but mostly highest transfer rate. Say loading system will be maybe a second or two faster, etc, but copying a large file will be from 5 to 10x faster

A SATA SSD is limited to the maximum data transfer rate of 6Gbps (750MBps). My boot SSD is a WD SN850 M.2, which benchmarks at a sequential read data rate up to 7000GBps.

The real-world difference isn't huge, though. Windows doesn't boot 9X as fast as it would from a SATA SSD.

A (trivial?) fact: there are also non-NVME M.2 drives that are PCI-E. I used one in a PCI-E slot adapter as a boot drive drive for a system with no M.2 sockets but that permitted booting from PCI-E, but not NVME. Mon-NVME PCI-E M.2 drives are scarce these days.

The Crosshair VI Hero supports M.2 Interface, SATA and PCIe 3 modes. The SSDs have come down in price a lot.

There is an opinion that on the laptops it is better to use the SATA SSD (heated less).
Dual M.2 PCIE Slot for SATA or PCIE NVMe SSD.
For laptops, it is better not the "fastest" disk, but the "coldest" one.

I know my MB has an M.2 slot. . I just don't know which one. Not that I can afford one anyway, but I can wish. . lol

Asus Crosshair VI Hero

They can be quite cheap now. WDBlue sn550 1tb nvme is about £80, which is less expensive than the best deal on samsung 870 evo 1tb sata ssd.

Some of you might be surprised at these results:

Asus Crosshair VI Hero
The Crosshair VI Hero's M.2 slot supports SATA and PCI-E/NVME cards, if you have a Ryzen CPU. (You do.)

Looking at Newegg.com, 500-512MB NVME M.2 cards start at around $50 US. You could also go to a 3000 series CPU, which would make the PC compliant with Win11 requirements.

I'm not saying you should add an M.2 SSD or a new CPU, but you could.

I am using the secondary M.2 slot because my M.2 SSD has it's own heatsink and RGB lighting. But it is about more than 4x the speed of the 2.5" SSD already.

Samsung 960 Pro here been running it for a long time with many system restores to it and it runs like a champ. Around 3000-3500 MB/s sequential.

OS runs real nice. Nvme is a better choice for the OS than SATA because it has better iops. SATA SSD work great for data storage.

Until they bring out another, and another PCIe standard:

Yes, I understood that too.

I suppose the point I wanted to make, is SATA III is a stable standard - ie there is no disruptive revisions planned for the technology.
However, PCIe is an evolving standard, and revisions will be disruptive to those who own the earlier tech - so could be a problem for those who invest in the tech.

So, while PCIe may win on performance. SATA III wins on maintainability, or rather, wins on stability of the standard. Just a point for the O.P. to consider.
