Hi, I have a problem with an Alienware M18 R1. I did a backup of a partitioned drive onto an SSD all is fine and all the drive letters are correct. When I try to restore from that SSD via a restart and boot into rescue media on a thumb drive, it boots fine to Macrium but then no image is available and if I browse for an image I find drives with the wrong drive letters, e.g. the backup drive E has become the C drive, there is also an X drive whatever that is. Any help?

You can ignore the drive letters. When you are booted from the Reflect recovery media, you have essentially booted a separate OS (either Windows PE or Windows RE) and they assign their own drive letters which can be totally different than what gets assigned by Windows.

    The five 8TB drives and three 512GB SSDs are part of a DrivePool using StableBit DrivePool software. The three SSDs are devoted purely to caching for the 8TB drives. All of the important data is stored in triplicate so that I can withstand simultaneous failure of 2 disks.

It is common for the drive letters to be different when you boot from any bootable usb.

When you boot from a Macrium rescue usb the first thing it does is to load its custom windows image file (.wim) into RAM and mount it as a virtual drive. This is your X: drive. You can at this point remove the rescue usb, Reflect is now running entirely from the X: drive.

You reported the same issues nearly three years ago. Did you find a solution back then?

Macrium reflect not finding drives.

Another 22H2 problem. If I do a restore with Macrium using a usb stick to boot from all the backups are shown as being on the C drive which means I cannot restore them, If I create a windows boot menu all is fine. I have tried different usb sticks to boot from, any one any clues? For me 22H2 has...

Thank you @Bree I think that was a different PC @Bree As far as I can make out the pc is seeing the drive and backing up to it ok, but after further investigation it seems like the drive with the image on is not showing, after a bit of fiddling it found the drive but not the drive to restore to

It's probably lacking the driver for that particular drive. What is it? NVMe? Some of those can require extra drivers, as was suggested last time around.

Thanks @Bree I think it is, but I have no idea where to install the driver, be it on the rescue media or the backed up image. The rescue media works fine on my other pc's

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

@Bree another day, another problem. I tried adding the drivers but it said Optane was not on my system. When I try to boot from the thumb drive today I get the BSOD with the stop code CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT, After restarting it sometimes gets to the Macrium popup and hangs on the winit after restarting again it will get passed that and either hang on the next screen or the loading networking screen. I think the only options now are completely re install Macrium if that fails bin it. Thanks for your help @Bree

I'm starting to wonder if Macrium Reflect 8.1 is too far out of date to be dependable. I recently switched out drives in a couple of Windows 11 Insider PCs for NVMe and used 8.1 to clone the system drives. When that finished, neither would boot. Macrium had never failed me before. Its boot repair utility didn't fix the problems. Windows boot repair finally got both working properly.
