Macrium Reflect does not complete backup until I unlock machine

I have Reflect scheduled to begin backing up at 00:00 to an external drive. According to the log, it starts the backup on time, but doesn't complete it until I unlock my laptop in the morning. I have Windows set up to not sleep while the laptop is plugged in, which it always is.

I have run the backup many times while I have the laptop unlocked and am watching it backup. The backup always starts and completes.

I'm not sure what Windows might be doing when I turn the screen off and it locks.

Check your advanced power settings from old control panel, you may need to adjust hibernation time, time for disks to shutdown etc.

I noticed that my power plan put the laptop to sleep when I pressed the power button. When plugged in, I don't want the laptop to sleep or hibernate. So, I changed pressing the power button to do nothing. I have been clicking the power button, simply because it turned the screen off rather than wait for it to time out. I was unaware I was putting the computer to sleep. I've only had this laptop for a few months.

The power plan had already been set to never turn the hard drive off when plugged in.

Closing the lid of a laptop automatically puts the laptop into sleep mode. Leave the laptop screen up to prevent this sleep gotcha.

If you have figured out the proper sequence and no longer have issues, please put this post as solved.

I am sorry but this is only true if power defaults are unchanged. You can set laptop to keep working if lid is closed.

I suggest you check whether your computer uses S3 Sleep [i.e. the "Sleep" that we all know about] or S0 Modern standby instead.
Run this command to find out [you can post its results here if you want others to comment]
PowerCfg -a
Your description of the symptoms is consistent with having S0 Modern standby. This cursed state gradually starts putting processes on hold as soon as your display turns off [i.e. when your Power options turns the display off].

All the best,
Denis

I tried this on my laptop putting it to S3, and I found its shutdown behaviour was even more temperamental. Resuming from sleep was slower and it requested a password, even though set to never on wakeup. If left for a modest period, laptop went into full shutdown. I do not know if this is a bios type error on my laptop or windows bug but in the end, it gave me more problems than it was worth.

I find S0 is instantaneous and that outweighs disadvantages.

Frankly, best option is to run Reflect as normal, and just set it to shutdown laptop when finished.

Running this command does not change anything. It merely retrieves data.

If the OP has S0 then running processes will start to get constrained as soon as the display goes off. That's why I thought the available power states were worth checking.

All the best,
Denis

It totally screws up my laptop operation putting it in S3 - it should not cause laptop to "fail" to retrieve settings.

That is what I get for sure, but S3 just does not work properly on my main laptop, but works as expected on my backup laptop (which does not have S0). In the end, S0 works fine for my use.

S3 just does not work properly on my main laptop
If, as I think you are implying, you have S0 on this laptop then you do not have S3 Sleep at all.

There are, in effect, four Power/Computer states for an S0 Modern standby [aka S0 Low power idle] computer
- Computer on, Monitor on {Work can be done on the computer}
- Computer on, Monitor off = S0 {The monitor turning off initiates S0 Modern standby i.e. idle}. S0 progressively shuts down user-initiated processes. No user-desired activities start, only MS-desired ones such as WU & their built-in email app.
- Hibernate
- Off

I went through several different stages in my approach to S0:-
- I adapted to S0 by using hibernation when I had been used to using S3 Sleep.
- When I got even more fed up with S0, I set my monitor to always stay on [it's the monitor turning off, as set in Power options, that starts S0] and I set a very dark screensaver to come on after a desired time so the screen wouldn't be staring at me all day.
- Eventually, I just used the tutorial to disable S0.
Disable Modern Standby in Windows 10 and Windows 11 - ElevenForumTutorials
- - In my case, S3 Sleep remained disabled so I carried on having to use hibernation as a second-best choice.
- - In my case, Task scheduler would not wake the computer from hibernation but others have reported that theirs worked OK.
- - In my case, my WiFi adapter often fails to restart properly [no networks detected] when it comes out of hibernation so I run a little script to disable it then re-enable it after which it works again.

I can enable S3 (disabling S0) using the elevenforums tutorial, but it just does not work properly in S3 mode as I have stated twice now. I set I set power button options to sleep (sleep is an option), no hibernate, and when I press button, screen does not go blank, but jumps to enter pw/pin screen, even though I turned off option requiring password on resuming from sleep.

After a split second, pc seems to sleep. On pressing power button again, screen flashs and just sits there at blank screen. Upon pressing power button again, pc does a full restart. Obviously something is not working as it should in S3 mode, so I put laptop back in S0 mode, and all works fine.

Not worth doing anymore - I never use hibernate or even fast start (not needed on nvme/optane drive - only gains about 3 seconds for me).

My problem seems to have been much more straightforward than yours - I merely had no S3 capability at all after disabling S0.

Perhaps a decent workaround is the second of the 'improvements' I tried - accept that S0 exists and just try to stop it kicking in.
- When I got even more fed up with S0, I set my monitor to always stay on [it's the monitor turning off, as set in Power options, that starts S0] and I set a very dark screensaver to come on after a desired time so the screen wouldn't be staring at me all day.

If you do ever decide to investigate again, you can use Event viewer to monitor Sleep-Hibernate-S0 transitions.

Best of luck,
Denis

From one day to another I had the same effect. Nothing on the machine was changed before, no new software, no Windows updates, no changes somewhere in the configuration of windows or macrium.
The scheduled tasks were not started after windows loaded but remains on the login screen.
Soon after login the tasks ran and complete.
I fixed the problem this way, deleted the two scheduled tasks, created it new and everything runs as expected.
I turn on the machine, going to heat up the coffee machine, drink my coffee, return back to the computer, logIn, Macrium did the job already.
