Macrium X image failed - licence problem

Well, a bit more testing and I have proven myself incorrect.
I have an old linksys dongle for wifi on this pc as well as an ethernet port. Occasionally I still use it just to see if it works. The license error did occur when I switched over to wifi. So, I ran the fix for the first time on this install of 24H2. Does seem to have worked.
I rebooted. No license error after first reboot while still on ethernet. I then disabled ethernet and verified the wifi connection. MRX started with no license error. Then re-enabled ethernet and verified connection. MRX still did not have license error. I am assuming the fix is working. If I create conditions where the error occurs again I will make a note here. I know you folks do not really need my input. :cool:

I don't have wifi enabled here (the device is installed with latest drivers but disabled in Device manager), the ethernet port is my primary MAC address.
I think the registry fix is telling the licence check to use the MAC address used during initial install/activation.

I have a question related to this:

With Reflect 8.1, there were several instances where I forgot to deactivate my license before I performed a clean install of Windows so I would then no longer be able to use the same license key on the system. I had to ask Macrium to reset it.

When you say "Just went online to macrium account and fixed it" does this mean that there is some way to correct licensing issues online now or am I misunderstanding this?

Yes. To be honest I have forgotten how I did it. I think I removed the key in the app, then added back in through the web. That wouldn't be much help in the situation you were in because yiou did not have access t o the app to remove the license.

Ahh, yes. That makes sense.

I wish that they would implement their licensing in a more "friendly" manner. I absolutely LOVE how Microsoft does it with things like Microsoft 365 or even Windows or TechSmith with their SnagIt and Camtasia products and others.

It always irks me when the licensing is made difficult for legitimate licensed users. As much as I love Reflect, this one aspect is handled far worse by Reflect than any other product that I own. Granted, it is a rare occurrence that I have to beg Macrium to reset a license for me, but I think it has happend 3 times over the past few years.

Ironically, if I were really desperate to resolve that issue immediately without waiting on Macrium, I guess that I could have restored my previous Windows installation and then removed the license.

Me too. I have software where you can deactivate licenses from your online account. That seems the best

Macrium apparently associate the network MAC address you used when registering the license, then each time you invoke the app they check it, Don't understand why that affected me. Maybe it is a bug. I am confident they will fix this soon.

I've not had that problem, in v8 or vX. I flirted with it though for nearly three months back in 2021....

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Normally when I have to do an update which could go either way, I remove the v8.1 licence and uninstall Reflect, but not the logs and settings, and reinstall when update is finished. This is to protect the licence. Thinking about 23H2 to 24H2, is it enough just to remove the license or should I uninstall Reflect as well when prompted? Thanks Mitch.

I have just let Windows Update do the 23H2 to 24H2 update, without doing anything at all about Reflect or its licence. About the only preparation was to make a backup before starting the process. The Reflect v8 and its licence survived the update intact and fully working.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've never had any licensing issues with Reflect 8, but it seems there are a few having problems with Reflect X.
I guess they'll sort it out eventually.

I had a potential problem in updating our old W10 pc to W11 - windows update didn't work and I thought I might need to clean install. That made me think that I should have removed Reflect and it's licence beforehand as a precaution. As it happened Upgrade Assistant did the job but since then I've been wary of the Reflect licence. Thanks Mitch.

A bit more info. After more reboots and switching back and forth between wifi and ethernet, and with a little sprinkling of vpn use there have been no more license issues. I will say their latest "fix" works. That is all. Have a good day (or night) everyone.

Yes I've not had more issues yet. We'll only know it's not working when it stops working!
I do believe the registry fix 'locks' the licence to the first-used MAC address during install.
Still doesn't explain why it changes though. I don't use wi-fi or VPN.
