Media Player Classic

Yes.

Perhaps not..., if so, just do the tweaks again, takes 30 seconds.

Uh..., no! If you do that, you won't have any sound at all!!!
Ok!
1. My previous desktop computer—a Lenovo Legion—worked perfectly, even with the sound card set to "sleep" mode; I never encountered any issues, including with Media Player Classic (which I mentioned earlier today). Do you happen to know why that was?
2. Now I have a new HP desktop computer, but it’s having problems—and I have to manually edit the registry, just as you suggested. I didn’t expect to have to do something like this on a brand-new computer, especially since I never had to touch the registry on my previous one. How is this possible? Could you provide more details regarding both questions?

Different brands, different hardware, different power management blueprints..., especially power as it gets more strict all the time!

Different hardware (if it be a hardware/driver issue) have different requirements/settings. And with changes in technology, even the same components can (re)act differently over time

It's all part of the rich tapestry of learning and experiencing the responsibility of owning and using a computer. Nothing sinister

But without hands-on access and examination of all your computer's bells and whistles, and their settings - on and/or off - it's nigh on impossible to definitively identify your issues (if they be an issue, at all)

Okay, so my new computer is fine, then?
In that case, would I need to change the registry value to 0 0 0 0?

Your choice, your decision. It may turn out to be pure experimentation

WARNING DANGER Messing with the registry can be fraught with risks for the inexperienced. Registry backup (and knowing how to restore it) mightn't be a bad idea (How to? ... your search engine will be your friend).

Imaging the whole system - before tampering - wouldn't go astray either

The sleep-state explanation makes a lot of sense to me. I have seen the same thing with a USB DAC that powers down after a period of silence, and the first second of the next track goes missing while the device wakes up again. It is worth checking whether the same delay happens with a different output, such as the built-in speakers or headphones, because that would point to the audio chain rather than the player itself. Testing with another player for comparison, as idgat suggested, is also a sensible way to narrow it down before changing any registry settings.

I use the Media Player Classic K-Lite Codec Pack Mega (version 20.1.0 Mega, ~65.4 MB, dated October 18, 2026).
When I open video recordings/files, quite often (though it happens occasionally, not every single time), there is complete silence for the first second—specifically between 00:00 and 00:01. The audio only "kicks in" properly and begins to play as expected after that first second has passed. It should be audible right from the very beginning (00:00).
It’s inconsistent—sometimes I open a recording and the sound works perfectly from the very beginning (00:00), but five minutes later, I open a recording and it’s faulty again, with the sound only kicking in after 00:01. Then, five minutes after that, I open another recording and it works fine from the start—and so on.
Could it be due to an update? Do you also experience this sometimes?
I have an issue like this. I have a Realtek chip, and the delay would occur when there was no audio for a while. Once it "woke", it would be fine until there was a cease in audio for whatever time is defined in the driver. I rolled back the driver to a previous one that didn't have this issue and that solved it... but only for a while. There have been many driver updates since, and my current driver has the issue again... but perhaps not as bad. Any audio source would be affected... Windows Media Player, Goldwave, YouTube, etc.
