Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Offline Scan) Always Require Bitlocker Recovery Key?

Windows 11 pro. I used Kaspersky total and paid for it for a while but I can no longer use it. So I'm using the free windows anti virus.


If I want to do the offline scan, it always ask me for the Bitlocker Recovery Key? Is this normal? With my old xps 15 9550 laptop and windows 10 pro, rarely did it do that if any. With the xps 15 9520 which I bought a few years ago, it does this now whenever I do this scan. The issue with this is I don't always have my Bitlocker Recovery Key with me all all times.


Does anyone know how good is it at scanning when doing full scan and this offline scan? It isn't as good as Kaspersky total right? I would like to pay and use Kaspersky but cannot anymore.

This is normal and expected. BitLocker will ask for a recovery key when it detects unexpected system changes, including to the boot manager.

For an offline Defender scan, you need to take the live Windows system offline. This means rebooting into Recovery mode, and running the scan. When you request the offline scan, Windows temporarily updates the boot options so it can boot into WinRE and automatically run Defender.

That triggers the request to provide the BitLocker key. You could temporarily suspend BitLocker protection for one reboot cycle, before asking for the offline scan.

I tried to find my Key using [aka.ms/myrecovery ] but it will not let me sign in with my MS account, any help would be appreciated. I can remember removing it when I first got the Dell Aurora R16.

Is it activated? BitLocker will sometimes start the encryption process, but not lock the drive unless it finds a MS Account to sync with.

I don't think so. I think I deactivated it when I removed it.

No. You temporarily suspend BitLocker with the previous manage-bde command. It disables having to provide a key for a certain number of planned reboots.

When you ask Defender to perform an offline scan, it will shutdown Windows and automatically reboot into Recovery mode. After it's done, you can boot back into normal Windows.

What I do for a Defender Offline Scan.
In File Explorer, Right Click on the C: Drive.
Choose Manage BitLocker
Choose Suspend Protection

Now you won't be asked for your BitLocker Key.
