Microsoft Edge generating random full page ads and windows

I'm back.

I thought being away would allow me to get used to Win11 (all the registry changes I want to do to make it work more like Win10), Outlook (an interface that changes at its own whim), and all the other unpredictable, AND BECAUSE THEY ARE UNPREDICTABLE, undesirable things Microsoft throws my way (Windows HELLO), (repeated OneDrive advances--even though OneDrive is deactivated!)

and to Google's repeated butting-in to whatever it is I am trying to do as if it is its operating system, application suite, and Cloud that I am using...

I really don't know who's responsible for this new behavior:

An example:
1) I bring up Microsoft Edge/new Tab
2) I bring up a new tab and am about to log in to DishTV, fil in user name and password, click on [Sign In]
3) and up comes a new tab with a full page (not window on the page I was working on) ad (This time, amazingly, it was an ad for "Don't compromise. Get DIRECTTV"

This kind of thing happens repeatedly, VERY REPEATEDLY!!

In fact, while I was writing this I received a notification informing me I'd just gotten a Conversation-reply on this website https://www.elevenforum.com/conversations/new-email-address-question... and plastered onto it is a window "Supported by Earth View Maps" saying:


Is this normal behavior? Is this some sort of virus?/Not according to Windows Defender!

I have no idea how to even look into this. But it's EXTREMELY disconcerting having to constantly having to bring up a spurious new link only to dismiss it or to dismiss an unwanted and unwarranted link that appears on the page I just called up!

Btw: regarding the spurious window that showed up: "Supported by Earth View Maps" has been the window-culprit more than twice...

Disabling popups in your browser should be possible. Consider add-ons for your browser that prevents it. (Turn them off for this forum as it helps with running costs)
Run your system through a few free online checkers that @Flashorn posted for any malware/adware:

Clear your cookies and history. All the usual stuff.

Earth View Maps is Google Earth. Most major browsers have addons that can help control most popsups. uBlockOrigin and AdBlock Plus are 2 that come to mind. If you choose to go that route, please go into the app's setting and allow popups for elevenforum.com.

Popups can also be caused by malware.. I suggest you do a full scan with Malwarebytes and run a scan with Adware Cleaner. Malwarebytes Premium is free for 14days. After that time it will automatically revert to the free version.

AdwCleaner: Your scan is complete No items were detected on your system.

So its Google that's encouraging me to upgrade to Windows11 Pro...???

And I forgot, every time I attempt to get any information from Microsoft, I get another spurious web page from a place like


Clearing cache doesn't seem to have helped at all! (Of course I have reasons why I've chosen to choose Edge (or any specific browser) as my default browser which clearing cache does away with (history, saving passwords, auto fill-in, etc). Thank god I'm not syncing everything with everything else. I'd have to delete the whole lot each time!

I still can't get Macrium to work right and obviously backing up is absurd when anything I do to test if something is really happening wrong (like resetting cache) I have to reexecute the backup setup and execution.

Before I completely reset the settings.

Just out of curiosity...and this applies to any browser...Rather than resetting the settings of a browser that I've configured and given information to that I want it to have and that I want to use later...only to find that doing so changes nothing...

Is there a way to just reinstall the browser and use the new reinstalled version (which will be "clean") to check if it works any better? If it does, remove the previous browser, and keep the new browser, if not, continue with the configured browser.

Might be resetting the settings might not be a good idea. Just some of my settings and not having issues.

Just as a matter of interest check your version in the About page. Shouldn't show anything about the Dev version only official build as in my image above.
