    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. Microsoft actually moves faster than expected.

When it released date of end support on Windows 10, Kaby Lake being impacted. Hence I had to dispose my Kaby Lake CPU and any older computers.

After cleaned up them, I was thinking those left could run awhile. Now Microsoft hints, Intel 8th, 9th & 10th Gen to be next ending support soon. and 23H2 will be expiring right one month later after Windows 10. That pace's much faster than expected.

btw, in practice, for many apps. support on Mac can be much worse than PC. For example, Schwab/TOS platform supports 10-15 yrs old PC/Win10, but four yrs old Mac/Big Sur only. Mac was on my consideration. In front of fact, I gave up.

This may be relevant.

When windows 11 became available I did my research on hardware and CPU requirements. I actually bought a TPM2 module for my computer which was not necessary.

I later purchased a motherboard and CPU for my wife.

I was able to install windows 11 on both.

I regularly did upgrades of win 11 new versions on both computer with no issues

With 24H2 upgrade on my wifes computer I got a message that the hardware is incompatible and there some mention of TPM2 missing

I went to the Asus motherboard bios and activated TM2 and window 11 24H2 installation was successful.

The 'support' that's ending is only the permission for OEM to use them in new machines intended to be supplied with Windows 11.

Microsoft have stated that existing support for 8th gen and later devices with W11 installed continues unaffected.

Yes, I'm aware Apple are even worse than Micro$oft, for forcing h/w upgrades.

I only need Windows for Office 365, and Mac OSX is probably the "nicest" OS desktop.

However, I do find Macbook Pro hardware, some of the most unreliable/prone to break down, as opposed to Dell or Lenovo.

So I'll probably just stick to Windows 11, and just upgrade when, workarounds no longer work.

Charles Schwab seems to have higher minimum level requirements compared to Fidelity. Even for mobile devices, Fidelity will still run on Android 6 and iOS 15 devices while Schwab had required Android 8.0 and iOS 16 as a minimum for quite some time already.

the reason is, TOS supports fully RTD (i.e. TOS RTD).




If you don't use RTD, then forget it. Any computer is fine.
If you do, please keep in mind, RTD wouldn't run on MacOS. i.e. Mac computer is NOT qualified. nor is older PC.

If you don't use RTD, then forget it. Any computer is fine.
If you do, please keep in mind, RTD wouldn't run on MacOS. i.e. Mac computer is NOT qualified. nor is older PC.

That has more to do with RTD being only on the Windows version of Excel which is from Microsoft. MacOSX which is FreeBSD is actually more powerful, look at the uptime of the busiest sites on the Internet and you will see what they run. Without BSD, there would be no Internet as the TCP/IP stack came from BSD. I don't use RTD, I don't even trade with TOS, only use it for the quotes, level 2 as I have close to 100 accounts with many firms and I prefer to trade using the browser anyways. Windows advantage had always been the software available for it. And I was not talking specifically about ToS but Schwab Mobile for example which to me is more important than TOS as I cannot even make Mobile Deposits if the Schwab Mobile app does not work.
