Booooo. Not happy with this at all.

Microsoft is reducing the amount of storage you get with your Office 365 plan. Currently for the family plans, you get up to 6 users, each of who get 1TB each. Microsoft is now reducing that 6TB total down to 2TB total to be shared across all of the accounts on the plan.

Hi All,

That's a not very nice move.
Although I think it can work as Onedrive only takes the system drives. And symbolic links count to the system drive too.
But this was to be expected in some way or another.
I braced more for an enormous price hike.
Loved OneDrive Family, to protect friends and family who can't be bothered to back up.
NOT nice MS!!!

Microsoft has kept the price of OneDrive the same for quite a long time. They kept the $99 price for almost 12 years without a single price hike. The did raise the price to $129 back in 2025, but did give the account holder some additional co-pilot functionality.

My personal OneDrive folder is on a secondary drive on my computer. I put just the stuff I want into that folder. I'm not having it do things like my Desktop, my Downloads or My Documents. <These folders are mostly unused on my systems.. I only have like 120GB of stuff in my OneDrive, so this won't make a huge problem for me.

It's just the principal. For all the storage space you got, Office 365 for me was a no-brainer. You couldn't get close to 6TB of disk space for $99 and for 6 people. Now, for 2TB of space it's on-par with other offers from Apple, Dropbox, etc. It's still not a bad deal, but far less of an absolute bargain.

what will happen with the Data.
Say you have 6TB and you using it all and they reducing to 2TB Will they just delete 4TB Data for all users.. or will they set read only until people delete data themselves.

If some of you have local backups and have over 2TB on Onedrive.. test and see what will happen :-)

According to the article @Brink posted, it becomes effective for renewals after May 2, 2027. My MS 365 renewal is on December 2026, so I think I can renew then and still have the 1 TB per person storage until the following renewal in December 2027. For now, there are only two of us on the current family plan with a combined 1.5 TB of data. I just need to figure out a way to compress music and video files.

I do use 365, specifically the family plan, and I always pay my subscription so that I have several years worth pre-paid. But no doubt MS will take away what I pre-paid for years in advance. Thankfully, I detest OneDrive and generally have no more than a couple hundred MB up there.

I still don't like when companies change the contract on you AFTER you have already paid for a service.
